Lack of Cosmetics

  • The topic title says it all.. theres literally trash for cosmetics in this game. some brown shirt vs another brown shirt essentially. You have an entire fantastical pirate world with magic, mystery, the undead, mythical beasts, and yet there is essentially NOTHING cool to work towards. It's not cool when the only interesting sets are locked behind commendations, it makes it so that either you ahve one of the 4-5 cool cosmetics, or you are wearing a brown shirt like everyone else. noone is unique nobody looks cool.

The clothes I am wearing are the SAME clothes i was wearing when i made my character in the beta. because being shirtless and wearing the cheapest clothes are more unique than wearing the ONE kraken set that EVERY single person wears because its one of the only interesting looking sets. I want to have incentive to play the game aside from just the sailing mechanics being decent, that joy is short lived in comparison to more tangible rewards.

I really like the "curses" cosmetics you have added, they are along the lines of the ACTUALLY cool, fantastical cosmetics that I think the game sorely needs, unfortunately there are only 2 and they are again locked behind lengthy commendations. That's FINE! but there should be cool things to earn with gold otherwise what the hell is gold for?!?! Some more attention paid to the purchasable cosmetics in the outposts would really help with player retention imo. Have fun with them!

Going to suggest some things just to provide some context for the distinction between the current cosmetics and the cosmetics i think would actually be desirable for people who are wondering:

    • Ghillie suit looking clothes with physics
    • Clothes with things like cloaks, hanging trinkets, small light sources, all dangling around with some limited physics
    • HOODS (why are there no hoods!?!), masks, cloaks, furs
    • Multiple sets incorporating skeletal pieces, the more expensive ones glowing with soul energy / black spell effects
    • MULTIPLE sets incorporating other fantastical elements (again.. these should NOT ALL be locked behind commendations), gold, fire, drowned-looking with seaweed and like dripping effects, wooden, tiki tribal stuff, feathers, palm fronds, skinned animals, spikes, gems, bio-luminescent trinkets, heavy looking armors, skinny looking stealth stuff, apothecary set full of potions that slosh around, merchant set with papers rolled up on a pouch / visible compass and stuff.

I could literally go on and on and on and on. I find it INSANE how dreary all the cosmetic options are. Like i said im currently shirtless wearing bilgerat stuff because at least that makes me feel more unique than all the people wearing the same kraken set. just too bad i bought that after the very first night of playing the game.

Oh and the same should go for ship cosmetics and tool cosmetics. Make them interesting, literally no one finds a hundred different brown shirts interesting. Im glad you have added SOME stuff, and I DO want there to be regular-looking clothes, but that shouldn't be EVERYTHING there is. Let people roleplay the kinda character they want to be.... if i want to be a ninja why not let me? if i want to be a heavily armored knight, why not let me? You always talk about wanting to give the players tools to make their own stories and be the person they want to be but i literally dont see any of that. everyone is the same pirate doing the same missions and all avoiding the merchants alliance.

Rant done, doubt it'll change anything just wanted to give some suggestions to the devs because to me I truly get the impression that the art team doesn't know what people find cool about cosmetics in video games.

  • locked behind commendations

at the start of the game you're given a complete set of sailor gear.

you're also given a couple of vanity items: hair, facial hair, hair dye, tatoos, etc.

then everything else... you have to work for. the harder it is to get the more piratey and cool it's supposed to be. this is to set you apart from the new players and make it worth working towards the outfit you want.

this is what game design refers to as game progression. without adequate game progression the game feels stale and pointless to players.

You're supposed to be motivated by how interesting and unique the clothing options are to want to complete the challenges. This encourages you to play the game in a way the game was intended to be played in order to get what you want from the game. if everything was "cool" and didn't require any sort of challenge or work to get then the game would consist of a lot of players who literally don't care one bit about the commendations and just troll or get bored and go play another game because "why play when I have the clothes I want"

also I think it should be stated that not everything is locked behind commendations at the start of the game. there are quite a few starter sets that you get for free based on the different factions and the different playstyles. these items merely require gold - and if you're earning gold then you're going to be completing commendations anyway.

  • why do you want a ghillie suit in a pirate game?

  • Hoods and furs in a tropical setting?

    Knights and ninjas?

No wonder all you see is a hundred brown shirts.

Ghillie suit with an Eye of Reach, and a gamertag over his head.

Really dude? Not your typical "more cosmetics" rant.

  • @acarin I agree with @wydyadoit. You are supposed to progress in the game and unlock them. If you okay and actually level up you will find more things.

  • Okay... after reading all that, I can tell this sea wolf has reason on the fact that there isn't that amount of cosmetics we should have ( because its a game based on cosmetics, and we dont even have the properly amount for a game BASED on cosmetics). There is not much to decide, I bought almost every clothes cosmetic and I don't identify my pirateself with any of those, I feel like my pirate doesnt fit with most of the clothes I have.

My point is: we totally need more clothes, a whole more variety, and we can have some hoods, some other kind of armor, some stylish hat, whatever... as long as it keeps it pirate. We just cant look like ninjas, or knights! This is a pirate game, for Kraken's sake...! of course we can decide what to wear, but we should have some cosmetics that fit in this thematic!

    Yeeeehaaaaa!!!
Spread the curseee in the seaaaas!

  • @acarin I agree about having more cosmetics in general, I also think there should be more progression in general and more locked cosmetics.

It seems the devs have their plates full of other projects...

I hope they add more clothes, and other cosmetics, but it doesnt mean the game has only a few cosmetics like the OP said. Most cosmetics are locked, which is a good thing, grind for those, GRRRIIIND!
