Will pets have certain abilities or features?

Ive been wondering this for a while will pets have abilities? For Example a dog can be taken on an island to help search for chests extra and alert of enemies. A parrot can be used to scout other ships in the server and show on the map for a certain amount of time. These are just examples just wondering if pets will have an actual use?
