we need a better report system

  • gonna preface this with a content warning for slurs and homophobia.

Sea of Thieves needs a better way to report toxic players. compared to other multiplayer games (like Warframe, Overwatch, etc), the amount of work a player has to do to report another player is far too much.

my friend and I were playing last night, and we crashed on an island with other players on it. while we were repairing they swam over and offered to come on our ship and help us. by the time they got there we had already fixed everything, so we left the island. I thanked them for the offer, and they called us [Mod edited]

then they started chasing us on their ship. my friend and I split off to deliver our loot, the griefing players cornered me and called me [Mod edited] one of them asked if I was a lesbian, and when I responded, he shot me.

it should be noted that both me and my friend are neither cisgender nor straight, and we always fly the rainbow flag on our ship. I have a strong suspicion that these guys were targeting us because of that flag. (and for the record I'm not upset that they were griefing us. I can handle griefing players, I can't handle those words being used against me.)

I would love to report this directly to Rare. however if I want to report players like these guys, I have to provide video evidence of their behavior. I understand why, since they did say it over the voice chat system, but ultimately this is just gonna result in toxic players not getting reported. how am I supposed to preemptively record a toxic player? am I supposed to record every single game session I have? I shouldn't have to record hours of gameplay just to get Rare to take action against toxic players. Rare should be able to go through this on their end and take action when I report a player.

You are correct in saying their report function could be a little easier to get at when playing.

Language related stuff like that is just so tacky, and un-needed; additionally I just don't want to hear it.

99% of the experiences like that are perpetrated by some kid (boys and girls) younger than 25.

The grand majority of those are under 18 years old.

  • @jawnvaljawn sorry you had to put up with such awful behaviour. Whether you can handle it or not, it just shouldn’t happen in or out of a game.

Rare’s system of reporting is somewhat long winded, though it does help to discourage false reporting and gives Rare precisely what they need to investigate the report properly.

If you’re not aware, you can use record up to the last 15 minutes of gameplay on Xbox, which in my mind should be plenty to report a toxic player.

  • @jawnvaljawn
I dont understand why you even responded to these players.
Even with a better reporting system, nothing will change. You ban 1 and 10 more will pop up.
Just mute them and move on. You cannot be the hero of the internet. You cannot control how other players talk. Really just let it go and move on. You will spend more time reporting ppl than having fun.

  • @jawnvaljawn

What gets me is how fragile people are in general to words. "Oh he said bad words thats just toxic"

What I've noticed is that players aren't really reporting Toxic Behavior. A lot of these stories boil down to, "They were mean to us and beat us, but I'm going to get the last laugh by reporting them HAR HAR HAR HAR!!!"

Trash talking is part of online game play. Hell its really part of the internet. Instead of using this as a last ditch effort to get back at someone who attacked you, I'd say be an adult and don't let words get to you so much.

SIDE NOTE I'm not saying their isn't toxic language in the game. However it is REALLY easy to understand at what point someone is taking something too far and at what point you are just being salty and using the report system to get back at someone who hurt your feelings.

  • @xultanis-dragon
Well said. I dont know why players care so much what other ppl say. Its just words. That can easily be muted.
Even with a better reporting system, it will just be abused.
I have been reported so many times for sinking players. Or having good aim. Its honestly stupid. Good thing microsoft actually investigates this stuff before they drop the hammer.

  • I just always remember the playground saying. “I’m rubber your glue, whatever you say or do, bounces off of me and sticks to you”.
But you have to repeat it in a little kids voice (out loud or in your head) for it to work.

  • @luciansanchez82 I am aware of how I can record my game footage. my issue is that I can't know to record game footage before a player actually calls me a [Mod edited] it doesn't feel reasonable to me to expect a player to record their entire game session in case they encounter toxic behavior like this, and I'd prefer if Rare had something on their end to ease the process.

  • @jawnvaljawn I get what you’re saying. My point is you can instantly record what just happened through the Xbox. No need to preemptively start recording. Something happens that you want to capture, press the Xbox button on your controller then either hit x to record the default 30 seconds of gameplay, or hit the select button to choose to record up to the past 15 minutes of gameplay. (Not sure what the equivalent is for PC I’m afraid, but I’m guessing it’s in the Xbox app). Hope that helps.

Not sure what else Rare can realistically do to speed things up, but I agree it is rather convoluted and off-putting to raise a report as it is.

  • @LucianSanchez82

The reporting system shouldn't be easy to get to. There should be some work to do it because of how easy it is for players to have their emotions dictate their actions.

When a game has an easy reporting system, it becomes an issue having to work through all the reports that have legitimacy vs. just players being salty.

"I can't handle those words being used against me." or the label of "homophobia" at the beginning lets me know the OP is probably easily triggered.

If the reporting system was easily used like pressing a button, then whichever department handled those reports would have to go into overtime because the amount of useless reports generated would be incredible.

I want to have sympathy for the OP. I really do. From the story, doesn't really seem as if its worth for a report.

Like I said. Its easy to know when someone is being truly hateful vs. someone who is just being a idiotic moron.

    @jawnvaljawn

Like the above person said though.

There is an option in xbox live for the xbox and for the PC where you can set it to record in the background. Basically it will record the last 5 to 10 minutes of your gameplay. Whenever you think you need evidence of something, have it set up and just press the "record that" button.

It will save the last however many minutes you set onto your hard drive.

You should develop thicker skin though. You assume their intentions were hateful when they could just be plain jerks. Also you might believe your flag to you means what it does, however, in Sea of Thieves its meaning has changed since the release of it.

Rainbow Flag of War - Everyones meanings for it are different but generally most players use it to show that their ships is "friendly". Its basically the PvE flag of the game at this point. If a PvP'er sees this flag, you are generally targeted. Not because of any political believe or sexual orienation, but because you are flying the "I'm a PvE'er with 0 PvP experience and I have a ton of loot on board."

  • @luciansanchez82 okay cool I didn't know that! I play on pc, but I managed to find something like what you're describing in the game overlay. it only works for the past 30 seconds though.

this is what my xbox overlay looks like right now. unfortunately neither broadcasting nor capturing mention that 15 minute recording limit.
