Really rare? (spoilers for stars of a thief)

  • Alright, so this morning I was doing stars of a thief, because legendary storyteller and art of the trickster are just too long for me. So I got to the statue, after an hour of doing this, and went in to the vault.

The thing is, I didn't notice the tiny book with the notes, so i couldn't do the puzzle in it. There were no clues anywhere inside, so me and my crewmate died. I was thinking then, OK, time to grab the notes and retry. But then it gave me the tale failed message.

What the heck? You spend an hour on something meant to be a story experience, but have to do it all again because of one mistake? That doesn't seem right. It's fine for voyages, because those are about making your own story, but imo, tall tales are meant for experiencing a story.

So that's why I think tales should have checkpoints every once in a while, such as being able to give the gems to sudds to save. This would also help with the time issue.

  • @blazedrake100 the checkpoints are the individual tall tales. The key to open the vault is single use.

  • @captain-coel
So one checkpoint every couple hours is fine? Tall tales are more like a story mode than voyages.

  • @blazedrake100 yes. 1 check point every few hours is fine, ita just like the other voyages, once you start them you need to finish them.

  • A similar issue struck me when I was playing through the tales: You can't even see the first set of puzzle vault symbols until the start the vault. This means you have no way of knowing whether you missed an important clue to solve the vault.

  • Definitely need more checkpoints

  • @hisdarkestfear
Yeah, I failed because I missed the tiny book by the statue.

  • @captain-coel
But they're not. Voyages are about making your own journey, but tall tales are about experiencing one.
Also, for voyages, you can partially complete the voyage and still progress. But not for tall tales.

  • Have to agree with this. Tall tales are really well put together and have some high quality content, but the inflexible time commitment makes it so I can't really participate. I don't have multiple hours to sit and play through one session, especially given it might end so unsatisfyingly like the OP pointed out for this tale. Agreed on a checkpoint system would make it less onerous and exclusive to those with plenty of time on their hands.

  • I prefer to think of the Tall Tales one long story, with the checkpoints being the conpletion of each tale.

Yes, you do sometimes fail to complete a tale the first time (the Art of the Trickster being particularly notorious); but with the lessons learned, you should be okay the next time.

  • @SurveyorPete
I don't see that as enough checkpoints. Art of the tricksters also not a good example, that one seems like it could take 2 hours, it took me an hour(all the time I had to play) to find the counterweight. If I could have given my notes and spyglass to salty there, I could have picked it up again later, and if the last section is that hard, give me a chance to retry without doing the boring part again.

Also, stars of a thief is really bad for the end. It's just recycled content that you need to notice a tiny book to solve, which I didn't in my excitement. I don't want to waste an hour on this again. I'd rather do a voyage where I can have fun and maybe some pvp where I'm not scared of losing an hour of work because I sold at decent times.

  • Perhaps I am a rare breed, but I don’t mind failing to finish a Tall Tale in one session.

Last night, I attempted TT7, Fate of the Morningstar, solo. I went to the wrong island at first, before realizing my mistake. With one task yet to conplete, I ran out of time to finish it. I did not mind at all. I was having fun, and know I will have fun redoing it, with better knowledge of what to do.

  • @surveyorpete
Yeah, I'd probably be fine, but the problem is I only have time for the tall tales on weekends, and I'd be able to actually do them if they had more checkpoints.

  • @blazedrake100 but they have enough check points. All 9 of the tales is a story. Breaking it up into 9 chapters made it so you have save points every 30min to 2 hrs or so. if you need a ha d doing any of then quickly, hit me up.

  • @captain-coel
I have not done any that I've completed in half an hour. The first 2 seem to take 1 hour each, and the other 3 ive tried(haven't tried wild rose) each seem to take even longer. Not everyone has that time, and even people who do can't afford a small mistake or they'll have to do it all over. That's why I think you should be able to save at some parts in the same tall tale, because they might be 'checkpoints', but each feels like a new story to me. More like a new level than a checkpoint.

  • @blazedrake100 the first one can be done in a half hour. Most take about 1-1.5 and my offer is genuine.

  • OK, now with that rare's nerfing the tall tales, I think they should add this even more. This is because they could buff the tales again if they do, and players wouldn't lose a lot of time for messing it up.
