Unmapped shallow coral reefs, teeming with friendly and carnivorous sea life, hiding rare and hard to reach giant Oysters. These would require 2 pirates to force open to obtain a giant pearl unless you're lucky enough to find one already open.
Regular sized oysters could be found here too and prepared in the ships galley for food with a chance of finding regular sized pearls during the food prep.
Coral reefs would be large areas, crisscrossed with underwater tunnels and amazing colourful formations. Ancient chests, artefacts and a new sea skeleton would also spawn.
The sea skeletons would be only armed with rusty swords, but because they've been down there for such a long time, would look like parts of the reef until you swam too close.
Coral Reefs, Oysters and Giant Pearls
@guybrush3pwood2 Just in General, finding Oysters and being able to hand in the pearls at the Hunters call would be nice, a mega pearl could even be added to the Skeleton forts maybe :-)
But maybe that goes against the hunters call as it's done mostly trough inventory items as opposed to held ones (with the exception of the Mermaid gems)
I really wish diving was a bigger part of this game. I really like these ideas; but would change / add the direction to be more about the mer-people, their culture, buildings. It'd be cool to explore underwater ruins with arcane magic that allows to breath underwater (maybe nymph statues since mer-man statues hurt)
Must admit I find quite a lot of chests in the water around islands already; but a way to get more mermaid gems, oooh, that'd be nice!
@hynieth I quite like the idea of prepping them to eat too, prising them open with a small chefs knife. They could add a neat little animation for this.
You could either turn them into the Hunter Call or open them. I guess if you turn them in you'd never know if they contained a pearl or not. The pearl would go to the gold hoarder and be worth more than the Oyster if you found one. Once the Oyster is open it's only good for food and cannot be sold.@odysseyhome Yep, I like the idea of diving and finding out more about the merfolk too. Perhaps you could find pockets of air trapped in underwater caves hidden within the reefs. Then you could swim further and further down finding these linking air pockets until you reached a merfolk settlement.
@ambiguousmonk I don't know loads about servers and programming, but would it that taxing? I know programmers use occlusion culling so only areas which are currently within someone's field of view are rendered, so as long as no one is on the reef or diving essentially the server doesn't even need to think about it and they use Level of Detail(LOD) to cut back on draw detail when you're far away from an object.
All that's really happening is the map is being expanded in one axis and it would only need to be certain areas of the map which are expanded. I'm pretty sure the ferry of the damned exists at a great depth and can be seen but never reached so the physical depth of the sea is already very deep
The map expansion would be smaller than the Devils Roar addition so would it be that bad? I am very uninformed on these areas, so I am talking from relative inexperience.A larger map alone simply means more burden on the server, since it needs to track everything in it (e.g. clams, ancient chests, artifacts, enemies, whatever else you want to spawn there). Level of Detail is a resource management concept for clients, since it's the client that graphically renders the world, not the server. Essentially, the more 'information' of any kind there is in the world, the more work the server needs to do, or may need to do, to track and process it all.
This may not actually be as big a server resource hit as I think it is, but I'm sure that is a problem that Rare either currently is or will be shortly encountering. Either way, it's a creative and cool suggestion, but it entirely depends on whether the servers can handle it and whether it fits into whatever vision/ideas the devs already have for the game
I love this idea! I totally could imagine opening big seashells like the current empty chests that have been introduced, and finding pearls in them to sell like mermaid gems. Maybe they could be a tiny bit more common than mermaid statues, but be worth something like 500g? The rich underwater scenery really need some more diving action, it's so disappointing to see a glint underwater only to find nothing but waterlogged castaways and seafarers.
@bloodybil I agree, there's not much at the moment to interest pirates into diving and risking encounters with sharks except for mermaid statues and shipwrecks.
This type of diving, possible solo would be better tackled as a team so you could watch each others back whilst searching for the secrets hidden in the coral.
The unchartered island near N13 has a beautiful coral area and I'd love to see another area of the map where those designs were more intricate and secretive giving us a reason to explore them further and risk more in doing so.@guybrush3pwood2 Sea life would be awesome. Especially If can cook them, ha!
Ocean crawler items everywhere yet not a crab to be found! Lol!
Dolphins, rays, and seals would also be cool. I want a seal pirate pet. Fetch me a fish my sea dog! No don't eat it! Yarh...
But I can see the amount of content to be created for this could be limiting unless it becomes a full DLC expansion in the future. Great if they can but I don't know how Rare is operating outside SoT (They maybe working on a unannounced new game).
@guybrush3pwood2
I like this, but I don't think the giant oyster should require 2 people. Maybe make it be harder with 1,but it shouldnt be a non soloer item.If you pirates think this is a good idea then continue to comment and continue to rate the comments within.
Like floating loot, without the required attention, ideas like this sink to the bottom. Of the pile..
Let's continue to flesh it out.... where could it je, how would it effect the current guilds, could sloops lure chasing boats onto it...ext@blazedrake100 said in Coral Reefs, Oysters and Giant Pearls:
