Rare Rarities: game Merch reward scheme.

  • I caught my first pondy the other day and said to my friend. "Oh my god! It's so cute! I want a plush one!" He said. "Then get one". Turns out he was pulling my leg: no plush pondies! He be a true pirate my friend.

This got me thinking about Bungie's player rewards scheme for Destiny triumphs. Complete a feat and get a merchandise reward. Their time limited availability was a turn off for me but it's a cool concept.

I know there are figurines for this game at retailers of NPCs; but alot of the cosmetic stuff in game like weapons, equipment, hats, etc would be rather cool to buy a real version after you buy the game version. Would also be cool to get a figurine of your own pirate avatar and ship in a bottle. Merch with sentimental value sells itself.

I'm personally a plush animal collector so plush fish / pig / chicken / snake I'd adore... And with pets being planned oh boy! Take my money.

I find this maybe a cool way to generate revenue in game to fun new content without it dividing player base or create a paying class system. Microsoft games have good merc (god look at minecraft) so would be real neat to see this idea become a reality if possible.

...otherwise I guess I'm going to have to make my own plush pondy! Lol.

Maybe cheaper way would be 3d printing? Not sure. I wonder how the Dev update stream props were made?

What would you like as a merch item and why?

  • Big difference is that the "rewards" that can be ordered are pretty "hard" to get in Destiny, since it's limited and it's the newest hardest content at that moment.

That said i like the idea to get more things in the actual merc store.

EDIT: Where is the merc store? If you click store you now get an option to buy SoT or get the game pass and thats it.....

EDIT2: NVM reading is hard..... They are revamping the store atm

  • I would love to see new merch.

  • @nessiroj Yeah I see why Bungie does that to keep production cost down but I don't like the "feeding the whales" mentality it creates. Hey I spent 100 hrs not 1000 hrs in your game; aren't I deserving of a cool t-shirt too. Am I not a true fan?

Ideally the buying the ingame item would unlock a small discount for the merch. A "thanks for playing here's your momento if you wish!" Gesture.
