Tall Tales Feedback: Full reset is a bit rough

  • Failed my first Tall Tale today. I think that failing a puzzle room, and having it completely cancel the tale, is a bit much.

We figured out what we had missed, and were about five seconds shy of finishing the puzzle room, when we both died. We spent a good hour and a half plus on the Tale, and to face completely restarting the Tale was really demoralizing. I understand and appreciate the need for consequences in the game for it to feel meaningful, but I think a full reset is a bit much. Even in ship to ship combat and PVP there is some chance of recouping what you have lost if you are quick, not so in Tall Tales.

  • @yakidak sorry, but how can you fail the vault in tale 1? It's not like in some other chapters of the tale, where you have to find out the code...these 3 codes are in the book!
    But ok...

Now that you know what to do, you should need 30 minutes to the vault...

  • Nothing says these should be completed on your first (or second, or third...) try. Learn, and try them again.

  • I agree. As much as there are things that we could consider obvious on these tales, having the whole thing reset is very very rough. I can imagine people spending a lot of time figuring everything out slowly, enjoying it all just to have the whole experience break down on something like that. Starting from scratch is questionable design.

Let me exemplify: one of the Tales has a vault where combat occurs very late on the chain. Dying in such a closed space, solo, is quite possible, and having all the time and effort put to waste is absolutelly not fun. There's no solace in thinking "oh ok, now I know, let me just run everything again lolz".

  • @yakidak First time I did the tale one of our crew didn't get into the room before the door shut. We decided to die on purpose so he could join in... Didn't realize that would reset the entire tale. Suuuuper dumb.

  • I was wondering that the other day with my crewmate, she said "What if we die in thoose puzzle-trap rooms?" Cuz someone always die there (we are scared of the sharp sticks going in circles appearing in the ground of Shores of Gold room)but we never had to experience that because, luckely, there was always one left that succed on the puzzle. So Now I know what happens... We will have to be careful with thoose then...

Sad to hear that you had to deal with that, Seawolf! Hope your next adventures go better!!

    Yehaaaa!!!
Spread the curse in the seas!!!

    Exactly this!

Many many video games are far more unforgiving in loss than Sea of Thieves is... It's called trial and error, persistence, patience - it goes by many names.

Why do people think we should be able to blitz through everything on one try with no risk of losing? There's no rewarding experience in that, Rare need not coddle players who refuse to get back up after falling down...
