Dear Rare, combat sucks.

  • Dear Rare,
Sword fighting is garbage. Blocking rarely functions, even if you are facing them. And if a block does succeed, they can continue to hit with the combo, so it's not worth anything. (Except delaying inevitable death) There is only 1 rule of swordplay in this game. First to hit wins. That's really it. You get hit once, and the stun will kill you. Especially if you are a solo slooper, getting overwhelmed by bigger crews happens often, and you have no chance to fight because they toss you back and forth with the stun. (During pvp) The pvp in general is just overall sluggish and I no longer find any enjoyment or excitement in it.

  • May I link this Thread?

But I dont agree with having to get a chance when there is 1vX (x=2 to 4). No matter what change you have, being outnumbered is going to be disadvantageous.

Well obviously, but removing that stun is a great way of increasing the skill ceiling for everyone involved, aggressor and defender alike. : /

    It's just a benefit. x]

  • If you block a combo the attacker is pushed back, that is the moment when your combo needs to be in time and place.

The stun is fine, it just needs to apply uniformly, which it quite often doesn't, presently.

  • @natiredgals What do you mean uniformly? Like every attack in the game should apply a stun effect? ._.

lol no, how would that make any sense??
It just needs to function the same across the entire playerbase. It doesnt always do that, presently.

I'm sorry, i still don't understand the statement.

In what way does it not function the same across the entire playerbase?

"Dear Rare, combat sucks. Sword fighting is garbage."

I'm pretty sure throwing insults at the game and the developers is not an effective way to get your post taken at all seriously.

If you block a combo the attacker is pushed back, that is the moment when your combo needs to be in time and place.

The problem is that once you block (or get hit), you're stuck in place, and the attacker can circle much faster than you can turn (even at max settings) due to the sword speed increase and lack of equivalent increase while blocking - so they WILL hit you if they know what they're doing at all. Even worse, that delay between combo swings has been completely negated due to the infinite sword swing exploit - as long as they get that 1st hit against you, which is incredibly in their favor if they swing 1st, you're pretty much going to be 100% dead. EVEN WORSE - none of this even accounts for the networking conditions between players nor the game's terribad hit registration issues!

  • Terribad? I learned a new word today. :P

  • @galactic-geek Exactly, all of the above.

How do most of these issues not get tested/changed/fixed in the pioneer program? I prefer the original sword combat mechanics!

  • @they-sank The pioneer program made A LOT of impact to the quality of their content updates mate... But that doesn't mean the Pioneer program is perfect... Some issues will bleed through, always... With all games, this is normal. :3

Though rare was a bit neglectful when they forgot to take defensive sword mechanics into consideration when they changed offensive sword mechanics.

  • @sweltering-nick Yes the pioneer program has made a huge positive impact, yes there’s gonna be issues that don’t immediately get addressed. I’m just surprised that something as integral and basic as sword mechanics would be overlooked.

Some spots on the map can make players permanently stuck - that’s to be expected, they’re working on it, makes sense. A voyage here or there is bugged - that’s to be expected, they’re working on it, makes sense. Some rowboats spawn on shore stuck behind wooden fences - that’s to be expected, they’re working on it, makes sense. ...But clunky, inconsistent, questionable sword mechanics? They’d better be working on it! The game has been out for a while now!

    Cheers

  • @arsigi yeah true, this post was mostly written in frustration but that is no excuse

  • @capn-ratstache I agree with the sword blocking issue. Blocking a sword attack should stop the combo or still allow you to move around yourself. Being rooted in place really gives you a large disadvantage in a fight.

  • There is actually something you can do after you block a hit. You can make a sidestep backwards (jump while blocking). which will give you room to be the one who hits first next time. This is why it is so crucial in a combat situation to have nothing behind you to block that.
BUT, i agree. The stun is very frustrating. If you block a hit the attacker's combo should be cancelled and the attacker has to be "stunned" or whatever so the defender can make his move, period.

  • It is literally the worst combat system in gaming. The programming is so lazy it is unbelievable. Combat 101, always have a chance and have a counter for every action. Even old wrestling games on N64 new this.
