Delete Half the Map!

  • (No, I'm not baiting or trolling, this is my genuine opinion.)

There aren't enough ships per server. Supposedly it's 6, but in all my time playing I've never seen more than 4, counting me. And that's a lucky day in east coast USA! I think we can all agree that ships are spread way too thin.

I don't know for sure why Rare hasn't increased ships per server, but I'm pretty confident that it's technical issues. Fortunately, there's an easy way around this: Delete The Shores of Plenty and The Wilds. (Maybe Cannon Cove and Sailor's Bounty could be moved and placed in with the Ancient Isles) .Once the size of the map has been cut in half, 4 ships will be plenty!

It's not like having more islands makes the game any better. Functionly, they're identical. They're all just stages for quests to be set on, only 4 marked islands in the game are unique.
    (Sailor's Bounty, Thieve's Haven,
Sharkbait Cove, Cannon Cove.) By deleting all the extra space, ships will be brought closer together, both increasing player interaction and decreasing server load.

  • Map reduction is not a good idea, except for the Arena which already implemented it in a way.

I'm all for increasing the number of ships though. I've never felt it's been enough. I'm guessing it's tied to the number of outposts though (except Morrow's), so really, more ships per server = map expansion with more outposts to spawn in at.

Even then, that's probably 8 ships at best so, really I'd say the design needs a rework so 12-16 ships per server are a thing.

  • @geoffman72 Why is map reduction not a good idea? What does having more map add to the game? (Other than more load on the servers)

  • @wilbymagicbear It be a big no from me on t'is one I'm afraid. I enjoy the feeling o' being in a vast ocean spotted wit' isles.

    More ships, aye!
    Less sea, nae!

An' get rid o' the Shores o' Pleanty? Be ye a madman? That's the best region.

  • I think its good as it is.
The other players ships are so much that i have to fear them, but not meeting them every second

  • @wilbymagicbear
Hello Mr Wilbymagicbear , if you want to see many ships to fight with , then i would suggest to try Arena a few times , you really don't have to search for a fight there....In the main game ,however , Sea of Thieves is simply much and much more than just search , battle and sink ships....i know that the trailers and other advertisement means put the shipbattles under a magnifying glass and with right, ship battles can be fun, Thrilling and Epic but there is much and really much more than just fighting and shipbatlles or stealing...

  • @awesomecoreusa It might feel like a vast ocean if the islands were unique, but it feels more like it's the same ocean duplicated 20 times over.

  • @clumsy-george Yes, I've played the arena. That said, arena goes the same way everytime and the stakes are always low. We should have crazy battles (or friendly interaction) in all parts of the game.

  • If you want a smaller map then Arena mode is for you. I think the map should hopefully be increased from time to time and really best thing overall imho is they should add more ships. I would love maybe even a new server type for fleets that would allow player sizes to be on par with the Battlefield games which would give us up to 60+ players per server. But in adventure mode I think having a low ship count is good, just not too low. Otherwise the complaint threads wanting a PvE only server would just get worse and worse.

  • @wilbymagicbear
Allthough i'm a big fan of a friendly approach , in Arena it is purely a pvp fest , sure that can and should be done in sportmanship and respect but really having things like Alliances in Arena , would only destroy it ,i fear...
Oh , and Mr WilbyMagicBear , don't write things like "delete half the map" ,please ...That kind of writing makes an old Pirate Heart bleed... ;)

  • @contentzilla What's good about less ships? Makes it easier to enjoy this game's intense, action packed, AWESOME PvE?

  • @wilbymagicbear Really? Huh.... I don't get that feeling. Each region be unique, the painfully blue waters o' Plenty, the oppressive waves in the Wilds, the angry seas in the Shroud... an' seeing islands silhouette out on the horizon like ole' friends guiding me home.

Ahh the unmistakable outline o' Galleon's Grave, soon I'll see the peaks around Last Words an' I know I need to watch out for uncharted K9 but soon I'll be back in the warm calm waters around Golden Sands.

After a year on the seas each isle holds memories o' past glory an' botched adventures. The time we found 3 cursed chests on one map at Cannon Cove, runnin' aground on Ole Faithful (HOW DID YE NOT SEE AN ISLAND THAT SIZE???), trying to get that last skelington throne on Marauder's Arch.... Cutting the map in half would be like throwing half me crew o'oerboard. T'would break me heart.

  • @wilbymagicbear Because it would be a large amount of work to remove/readjust content from a game that promotes wide open spaces and exploration. It's just not happening.

You're on the money with more ships needed on the horizon. Let's hear other ideas to improve that aspect, without removing current content.

  • @awesomecoreusa You know you could just have those great memories on other islands. Hell, none of what you mentioned even requires a specific island, that could have happened everywhere.

  • @wilbymagicbear THIS. THIS IS A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Im almost lost for words

  • @geoffman72 Content? Islands aren't content. And yeah, I'd honostly prefer keeping the big map, but it seems that due to technical limitations a big map comes at the expense of well populated servers. Battles are better than different shapes to dig chests on.

  • @wilbymagicbear Aye, but returning to those islands is where the feels be comin' from. An' I have the same happy memories o' Thieves' Haven (the first time I sailed a galleon through her caves at full wind), Shark Bait Cove (where we met crafty Merrick an' hunted down the big beastie) an' the first time I locked my one good eye on an island spewing fire and rock into the sky... I love all the islands (except Plunder Valley which can sink back into the sea for all I care) an' I would hate to see any o' 'em go.

    More ships, AYE!
    Less sea, NAE!

    *also more sea aye too!

Well for Adventure mode if they increased the ship count and shrunk the map then it would increase PvP and lessen the PvE aspect which would simply make it more like Arena. If you want a smaller map with more ships closer together then like I said Arena mode is waiting.

  • @teammastadon ?

    @teammastadon ?

I think ye broke teammastadon :)

  • @awesomecoreusa He said "islands aren't content"...i can't ......

  • @teammastadon well.... I mean.... in a way they're not. Cause they're core to the entire game system :) they're MOAR than just content.

  • @awesomecoreusa this post is almost as wack as a previous post i saw titled "Nerf the dock" (dagger tooth). I'm not gonna lie thought they keep me entertained lol

One time we sunk a sloop around the shores of sunken grove, who at first must have thought he was going to win because as we traded fire he was talking trash and then out of the blue right before we hit him off cannon and he sunk, he laughed at us with literally exactly the same laugh as the happy mask salesman from majoras mask, so i turned to my crewmate and was like “was that just me who heard that guy transform into the happy mask salesman from majoras mask?” And then we both just started laughing really hard because of how perfectly recognizable it was and yet how unintentional it seemed.

He definitely heard this and then he ended up coming back afterwards and we talked in game chat, and was trying to say we were toxic and bullying lesser ships and blah blah, when really we had to run back from gathering loot because this was that weekend when random chests were spawning in piles, and he was posturing on us when we opened fire so either way know how to park to show your intentions or dont complain imo, but he also said we were making fun of him for mocking his laugh but i really couldnt help it, and its not like we were laughing in bad taste it was just because it was the same laugh as the character in zelda.

So instead of explaining that to him i just youtubed “happy mask salesman laugh” and then played it through my mic, which interrupted his sentence for him to go silent for about 6-8 seconds as he realized how similar the laugh really was, and then he quit without another word lol!

We laughed for a good while after lol. If they removed sunken grove i wouldnt remember this story everytime i go there.

Im all for more ships and expansion of the map eventually. The current areas need more first.

    heres the laugh lol

And if you like that game i recomend the next video youtube gives you called “terrible fate” after the clip of the laugh.

  • @teammastadon Islands are to Sea of Thieves what the stage is to a play. It needs to be there, but it doesn't provide anything itself.

  • @contentzilla Arena is boring storm of chaos that plays the same way everytime, and has no stakes. It's emergent, unique interactions that make this game fun, but the lack of ships in adventure really hurts that.

  • @wilbymagicbear said in Delete Half the Map!:

I couldn't disagree more I am afraid. The isles all have character an' are as important to me as what I do while I'm on 'em. Some make me feel relaxed and calm, some tense me to the bone.

Who doesn't dock their ship inside Smuggler's Bay an' not look around in wonder, or enjoy strolling through the waterfall caves o' Crooks Hollow. The isles are the stars on the seas.

  • I could potentially see this as an option for low population servers or the future of the "private server".

Granted you would have to potentially scale voyages so that it isn't beneficial to grind a smaller area and Athenas are right out as far as I am concerned with this model.

For the purpose of "lore", it could simply be the the Devil's Shroud has spread and blocked access to other regions, locking that session into a single zone.

  • @wilbymagicbear said in Delete Half the Map!:

Canon Cove is nothing like Thieves Haven, which is very different from Old Faithful Isle, which is nothing like Crooked Masts, which is very distinct from Sailor’s Bounty, Marauder’s Arch, Fetcher’s Rest, Ruby’s Fall, Shark Bait Cove, etc. They even have their own ancient lore!

If you want to eliminate half the map then just pick a half you want to hang out in and don’t sail outside of it. The development team made it clear from early on they wanted to tune the game so that on average, players encounter (can spot on the horizon) another ship every 15 minutes. While one player may not see one for an hour or more, another may have a session with ships everywhere they try to go. If you feel like your server is empty, try dropping your anchor now and then to allow a server merge to occur.

  • @ghostpaw All the islands are the same. "Woah, the trees are a slightly different color! The rocks are in different places! This painting of the Kraken is red, not black!"

I don't want less islands for the sake of less islands, I just want to be able to find people! Those hour long sessions without seeing another ship are the norm, not the exception, and server merges don't seem to help.

  • This guy again? He comes here with the worst ideas that ultimately are only self-serving to his thirst for combat and thieving other players. How about you adapt instead of trying to change the game for the worst - in case you haven't noticed there is no one who agrees with your suggestions which should be your first clue that your idea is not worth considering. This one however takes the cake, talk about missing the forest for the trees.

  • @wilbymagicbear OMG. Can this post be sillier? The devs aren't going to remove content almost all of us (except you) love, because you don't see any ships in the orizon? You're crazy man.

  • Delete half the map

Thanos wants to know your location

  • In all seriousness this will 100% not happend to sea of theives

  • Hmm.

    No.

Get better at spotting ships and gaining on them if what you want is hunting crews or play the Arena.
