Problem with Fishing

  • I don’t typically gripe or complain about the issues with this game but a couple things are bothering me.

I love the fishing in the game, it’s a great add on and just a super chill thing to do while sailing alone. However two things in particular are really bringing it down for me.

First, the splashtails. It’s fine that you can catch them anywhere with out bait. But if I’m in a particular aria with the right bait, I shouldn’t still be caching splashtails. Needing specific bait to cash specific fish is fine but it’s too hard to come by to waste it on splash tails. I’ve been trying to catch ancient fish with leeches but still catch twice as many splashtails. I think either bait should be something you can buy from the same people you sell the fish to, or if your using the bait correctly in the right place, you shouldn’t be able to catch splashtails.

Second, the prices need to be increased. I get it that you can fish to your hearts content and cook them and blah blah blah. But even standing right on the sea port dock and handing the fish right in as you catch them, it’s about impossible to level up. The low teens levels for Hunters call feels like the low thirties for Gold Hoarders or Mystic (I’m a PL by the way, so I know the grind just as much as anyone.) I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like in the thirties or forties levels getting 50 or 100 gold a fish (if you’re lucky.) The prices for real need to be adjusted. Maybe a few hundred for a regular fish, cooked or otherwise.

Again, I love the fishing, just have a couple complaints and I super hope they sort them out.

Let me know your thoughts or any good tips. I know you can pretty much get endless Pondies on certain islands but I’m more interested in trying to catch them all (insert Pokémon joke.)

Finally and most importantly. I know every time someone makes a post complaint about some issue with the game there’s going to be the twenty people that literally post nothing but “I don’t have any problems doing (insert task.)” Or “I’m always able to do this that or the other thing no problem.” Or basically just telling people “Git Gud n00b!” And they never actually say anything helpful or constructive. Please just save it, we get it, your the luckiest or greatest gamer and what ever the rest of us poor sods are dealing with just comes down to the fact that we aren’t cool, or smart, or great enough. Save your self the post, please.

Other than that, thanks everyone for any thoughts or help. Good sailing, and good fishing to all.

  • Good points, but i upvoted mainly for the latter end of the post. Too many of those people around here wasting good breathing air and devolving good discussion.

I think a better size range rather than color associated with value and rarity would be much better. Then even if you still catch splashtails each time is still a different size and feels like it is something new.

I agree the rng should be changed and i think things like combining different lures, types of line, aswell as bait boosting the rng chance of catching a chosen fish, and changing the difficulty of dealing with upgraded unique behaviors that they could add to each fish type, (some try to dive and break the line, better line and a floater helps, some try to jump and spit the hook, weights and a treble hook help, etc) would make the fishing much more satisfying as an activity in itself regardless of the hunters call goals.

Should have mentioned the obvious solution to your bait problem as uberkill did below but i must have missed that in the op the first time lol. Either way the actual rate of splashtails going for the bait in the first place could be mitigated in ways i described.

  • As for the Splashtails, here’s a tip...

    • When you are targeting a region fish that requires bait, position yourself at a higher cast point. On a dock post, on the back of ship, on canopy on dock.

    • With this position, make sure you are looking at clear water or can reel into clear water after a cast.

    • Cast and reel in as close as possible so you can clearly see the bobber AND the fish about to bite it.

    • Get to know your fish types and colors. If you are targeting Ancients, you should know what they look like and the color you are after. Color is listed in the Rep page for the fish...it’s close to that base color.

    • If the fish circling the bobber isn’t looking like the one you need, quickly zip the line back in (LT on controller). This saves your bait.

    • Cast again and try for a new fish. The rng for the fish will change with a new cast.

    Hope it helps!

  • @uberkull Yeah, I’ve fished with some guys that have made some of the same points. I try but it’s hard to get a good look at the fish some times if your casting into darker water.

On the occasions that I have tried this I somehow still loose my bait? Maybe I’m waiting to long or hitting the wrong button.

Thanks for the help thought for sure!

  • I believe you can also hit B to instantly remove the pole and bait, but keeping the bait from that pesky splashtail.

So if you are in darker water, you are too deep. :)

If you really want to target certain fish, cycle servers and fish from the Outpost dock(clear water, easy to see) if you get the right rng baits from the barrels. It’s not sexy, but it’s a fast way to get that one fish you are missing or can’t catch.

Also, pull in the line as soon as you get a glimpse of the ‘wrong’ fish. Always saves the bait.
