Tall Tale respawn option.

  • I've heard countless daunting stories from people concerning their tall tale items being either:

    • Griefed

    • Misplaced

    • Glitch

    • Not spawn/Despawn

Too avoid an entirely passive Sea of Thieves adventure mode purely for the continued expansion and exploration of the lore of the Sea of Thieves, I thought if your ship was sunk or you misplaced an item you could either

    • Have the Tall Tale items spawn onboard after sink/scuttle.

    • Potentially adding in a carried over progression and a force self server merge button to the menu screen.

I simply ask that the developers consider some form of refresh ability because the seas aren't always calm and collected and most struggle with the Tall Tales for hours if they're not consulting a guide and that's without player intervention.

Give it some thought, keep up the great work!

  • This would be fantastic! I was grieved 5 times in a row trying to do the Tall Tales quest, to have my quest item taken from me and killed by other players. If we could get a respawn option, as well as maybe an option of being able to carry quest progress to a new server if need be, I will be back playing!

  • @john-doyle-new I've also had a group of players steal my quest chest, which was no use to them at all, meaning I couldn't continue until I repeated the 2 hours spent to retrieve it in the first place...

My other suggestion is to have a permanent quest log during events to help keep track of what's going on. If you log out and log back in (to change server, or perhaps to continue on another day) it can be difficult to see where you started and continue, it would be nice if you could log on and have 'speak to X' or 'here are the clues from your most recent quest' already on your screen. This really doesn't matter so much for normal voyages, but for event quests it'd be super handy...

  • @angrycoconut16 good idea! But I find the items are more crucial to the tall tale, keeping your progress while migrating to a new server would be amazing and the ability to respawn with already achieved tall tale items upon your ship respawning you'd find your stolen skeleton chest which has no value other than preventing your completion spawned back in your captains quarters and you'd be spawned the usual PVP sink distance away or altnerately join a new session entirely.

  • Or you could do what I'm thinking, just not do the tall tales. Arena here I come!!!

  • Unfortunately I just had my tall fail right before the last turn in. My ship sank as a skeleton spawned when I was collecting the last piece on plunder valley. It was the cannon on the beach. Anyway, I took the chest out with the piece before it sank and put them on the beach. I spawned at Mermaid's hideway and got back pretty quick. Soon as I'm about to stop at PV, I get the tall failed notification. It wasn't even 3 mins since I was gone. So I'm PO'd. Also, the minuscule 3,000 gold for all that time spent on these, esp. if you're doing them solo, it's a waste of time. I like the stories but the potential failure, plus the glitches, low payout, doesn't make me want to continue doing them.

  • Mass tagging i believe is againct forum rules, you might want to edit that out.

second of all, no if you lose your quest item for whatever reason = quest failed, that is the risk during a tall tale, getting sunk by players and/or ai threats.

else their would never be a loss condition and it would mean nothig if when you actually succeeded during your tale. if you follow the quest line you'll see that multiple crews that tried to get to the shores of gold sank on their way and had their voyage cut short, we at least are lucky we can easily restart said tale

  • @trancerevolved the tall tales are not about the gold, you can put a separate voyage down (athena's, merchant, gold hoarders or Order of souls if you want gold.

  • @john-doyle-new It would be amazing. It's just too frustrating to be stolen like this. You're in a quest that is already difficult and when you finnaly find the loot that can make you continue que quest, you simply get killed by other players who stay around outposts. I tried 4 times to do it and it always ended up like this. It's just not possible. I want something to avoid this kind of situations. A no-PVP mode, or make quests items not-stealable and make them respawn on your ship when you die. I don't know but PLEASE DO SOMETHING.

  • @nanane19994u I also think characters should be temporarily immune when interacting with important quest NPCs. (perhaps only for events) They shouldn't be killable at all while the NPC is talking and giving them the quest item. A fair trade so this couldn't be abused would be to also make your character immovable for the duration, and then provide a simple skip button for people who have already heard it, allowing you to control your character again.

I.e. you can't be attacked, but you can't attack others either, until the dialogue is over.

  • @john-doyle-new i know the payout is not high, but if you truly follow the quest line you will also learn that it isn’t about gold or a high payout.

  • @callmebackdraft said in Tall Tale respawn option.:

@john-doyle-new i know the payout is not high, but if you truly follow the quest line you will also learn that it isn’t about gold or a high payout.

I'm a pl10 with 4m+ every cosmetic available, and a really good insight into SoT.

This post was made for @LadyMonkey17 because whole heartly I agree with her in the sense of Tall Tale items being somewhat obsolete and another method for griefing.

  • Reading the replies I guess I am the only one against this idea?
Where's the sense of danger in that? This game is about the excitement of never knowing what dangers are just around the corner, both being environmental and other players.

Leaving your ship open for attacks is part of the game and losing it and your loot, be it treasure or your key Tall Tales items, is part of the game.

I believe this is where the game's uniqueness and excitement are thrived upon and should not be changed.

  • @lt-swag-johnson I'm with you here as well. There already is a checkpoint, it's right after you finish that chapter of the voyage.

In regards to the 3k for finishing each one - I feel like this is fine, a bonus really, as these tales are simply lore based and you can find plenty of treasure on the shores or in a side quest along the way. Most of the game is about getting treasure, this is about the story.

  • I would say, the objects you need to solve the puzzle could be part of your inventory - the key, the plank, the logfiles, the statues. You won't lose them until you leave the game.

  • Thinking this through, I'd have to say "no" on the item respawning. While it would truly stink to lose a key item and have to restart the quest, these are not time-limited stories. There's no rush to complete them; they're meant to take some time. And if the items can't be lost, then they lose their sense of value and significance in the game. We're talking about rare, one-of-a-kind artifacts of great power. We should protect them at all costs. The fact they can be pilfered and lost gives the story impetus. Without that sense of urgency, the story loses something.

  • Agreed. I also wish you had the option to server-hop while keeping your progress. That way, if there's one crew who keeps hunting you, you can switch servers and continue your tale.

  • Again this was simply an idea based off of what I heard from Lady Monkey, and RARE may or may not listen regardless however there is a chance they'll use this forum selectively even if it's for the server migration I hope it comes to fruition.

  • I did have an idea where say if you lost your ship due to some cause and along with it the quest items, that perhaps a merfolk could surface with said items and would flag you down by your respawned ship. After all, given the lore behind them and their relationship with the Pirate Lord, it would make some sense that he would ask of them to provide some help where needed.

  • @sargent-sully I love that idea, really would be a sight to behold.

  • @sargent-sully This wouldnt make sence at all..

  • @lysergicaa Did you ever look into the lore for the game? The Pirate Lord had previously allied with them to deal with the krakens and even was the one to have the shackles created that held the Old Mother. It wouldn't be surprising that the Merfolk would feel obligated to owe him favors for that and given that we are operating as an agent of his (in a manner of speaking) he could try to provide help through said favors. Could also just have one of those Athena strangers show up with it instead before disappearing. Lord knows they have some kind of voodoo tricks up their sleeves.

  • I'm sorry for your loss, but I cannot agree with you. If one thing makes SoT unique and thrilling is that you must always count with the cruelty of the sea dogs, always looking for blood. Not because the quest items would be useful to them. Just because it's fun to shink another player's ship and watch his face melt into tears.

So, I vote NO. But you have my condolences.

  • Had a crew mate’s game crash while he was on the way to turn in the crown and it despawned when he disconnected

  • I get what people say about the “thrill” but for someone who has limited time to play games I can’t explain the frustration of actually finding time to link up with a buddy who lives in another state to play and spend 2 hours on a quest only to have a crew follow us and sink us repeatedly only to lose the quest items. I’m honestly not one to complain but other people have ruined the game for us. Would it be so hard to make the quests Tall Tale quests locked so attacking those ships wouldn’t be possible?

  • @starlord013 don't necro threads, it's bad juju.

    @Deckhands

  • @captain-coel
Uh oh tone police are here

  • @starlord013
Yes what you are asking is impossible.
Rare made the items stealable for a reason.
You lose the item, you lost the game.

Yes it is frustrating. Everything in this game takes alot of time.

But you have unlimited lives and continues. Try again.

  • you can tell rare thought of this, as people have said they could have been inventory items but they are not for one, for two, on the shores of gold I got my ship sunk by someone who simply came to sink me and then left, I decided to continue the quest and then just hide the gold hoarders skull and hopefully come back for it, once I was done the quest my ship had respawned on the island, I was relieved. they obviously figured out what could or could not go wrong, and looks like the option to lose it all was considered and allowed

  • Dont know if this has been said yet but my friend and I was playing last night and got the smelly key was on route to the chest and about half way there it mentioned it was lost at sea and we had to start over....is there a time limit on the key or something ??????

  • Yeah, I wish the quest items would at least permanently float in the water. We were at the very end of the Wild Rose tall tale and had both pendants in the chest. We got hit and sunk near an island and thought the other team had the pendants. Unfortunately they didnt pick up the chest, these were a galleon full of ghost attired players so you know what they're like and what they're compensating for..

Anyway, the compass showed that the chest had sunk and it was about medium depth in the water. Unfortunately the chest with the pendants went through the ground layer and we could not get to it. This really really sucks! It was so frustrating.

It stuffed up my day, especially as this was a design problem. I was banking on the fact that we would eventually get the pendants as the galleon could not sell it. Instead the environment stuffed us.

  • I agree. The commendations should act as a checkpoint. Today I was working on tall tale six and I had been doing it for four hours. I was on the vault isle when I realized that I had forgotten the totem. I returned to find people destroying my ship. I fled and they chased me for 40mins but since I was a solo sloop and they were a duo I couldn't lose them. A meg came and attacked me and that in combination with the sloop sunk me. I was extremely upset that the hours I had put in were for nothing. This system is terrible and takes away from all the work that was put in the tall tales. I wish to see this changed.
