Weird voice issues(pc), wanna see if the community can help me!

  • So I contacted support about this, and while they tried their very best they weren't able to solve my issue. I figured maybe you lot of salty dogs can.

The short of it is I can't use voice chat. Not because my microphone isn't picked up or anything, but because I actually genuinely cannot hear anyone else.

So as you see here, my voice chat is greyed out.

    alt text
The microphone is enabled and is the default.

    alt text
Sea of Thieves has access to it.

    alt text
Xbox sees it, which is good.

And on the Xbox website, all my privacy settings seem right.

So any suggestions? I know this may not be the best place and I'll probably also post this to the subreddit but...well I'm running out of ideas. Not being able to hear anyone, friend or foe, makes public sailing impossible.

  • @chaos-kinslayer I cant offer a solution but I own the exact same headset. Did yours come with chat/game balance wheel?

  • @lord-pharqwad It did! And I love the wheel, it's super handy for most games when I don't want to turn down the game audio.

  • @chaos-kinslayer I always accidentally rub mine all the way to chat and get deafened by my sister lol I want to say this happened to me once though man was there a driver update lately?

  • @lord-pharqwad Not that I have seen? but my computer usually downloads that stuff in the background.

  • @chaos-kinslayer Is your headset new? I was reading on reddit that a few people had this issue with the wireless version and it ended up being a defective unit. You can always raise a ticket with steel series if you dont have luck anywhere else. From what Ive read you might get another headset out of it 🙏

  • I've got the Arctis 5.

You probably already have but in windows set your default sound device to the be 'Arctis Pro (Game)'. Leave the 'Arctis Pro (Chat)' as the default mic device.

And then in SOT change that 'Crew Chat Output' to be 'Speakers'. I have no idea why it needs to be speakers but I just know that if I have it as 'Headphones' I can't hear anyone in the game with those settings. If you then turn on Push to Talk then your party will be able to hear you and so will people in game when you hold the correct push button. Enable the chat icon to see if you are talking in game. It will appear in the top right when you are.

First of all, what a good choice of a headset! Steelseries Arctis for the win ;). My advice tho is that you use Steelseries arctis pro game profile, not the chat. It improves your sound 500 times. And you dont need chat profile to hear others. For why you cant hear others, im not sure. I use also the steelseries Arctis pro wireless and have no issues. But, i can try to help you, if you want add me on discord (mentimjojo#1707). Its easier because we have direct communitcation threw chat.

  • I use Arctis 7s myself (great headset, excellent choice)

    Mine work perfectly with SoT.

Have you checked that the volume sliders on the cans are set correctly? I seem to remember having issues where I thought my headphones weren't working but it turned out I had discord on 100% volume and in-game turned all the way down.

Also there's a mute mic button on the back of the headset, make sure that's not set to off (your mic will have a red light on it if it is).

Anything more complicated than that and you'll need to ask someone who knows what they're actually talking about.

  • Voice communication is the least supported and most broken feature at the moment. Most of the time it works perfectly fine for me, but there's a weird session once in awhile where my crew can't hear me and I can't hear them, but I can hear and talk to other crews perfectly fine.

It would probably happen more often if I used open crews more often and didn't rely on discord. I blame the xbox services integration on PC being poor.

  • @Chaos-Kinslayer
So you are seeing the chat bubble above their heads, and can't hear them?
Set chat output to speakers instead of headphones to have your windows defined audio output used.
