Community Created Safe Zone

  • I have read a lot of discussions about people not wanting to PvP or requesting a 'safe-zone' so they can meet other crews, socialise and show off cosmetics, and even form alliances and go on voyages together. In a recent post I made, it occured to me that this could be something created and controlled by the community at large. If the majority of people truly want this safe-zone idea, then we could create and police one ourselves, without any need to change the game.

Now, I don't think this is a new or unique suggestion, but put simply, if there is a place that the majority of the community designate as a safe-zone, then people could visit that location and know that others visiting are likely to be friendly. In my opinion, this would be better as a larger island rather than an outpost. That way, people would be less likely to visit with loot on their ship and making themselves easy prey. A larger island would also make it more difficult for a single crew bent on PvP to potentially dominate over multiple crews wanting to meet and socialise.

There of course will be those who target the location. However, with the majority of people working together, they could band together to fight others off, making it a difficult target. The opposite could happen, with those wanting to take over the safe-zone banding together with others to fight everyone off. Of course, you could argue this is then a safe-zone for those people anyway as they are working together.

Another additional consideration is that, with island locations being used predominantly for quests, it might be worth having the location change over a set period of time. Perhaps this could be on a month/bi-weekly or even weekly basis.

Now, the difficulty with this is getting the community to first buy in to the idea, and then actually agree on a location to be the safe zone. This I am afraid is the biggest hurdle to this whole enterprise, however it is my hope that putting the idea out there might start to generate some traction. It could simply begin with a community member starting a post saying something like, 'safe-zone is at Crooks Hollow until 5th May'.

I'd be interested in any comments people have!

  • Hmm, interesting idea! Old Faithful Isle would be a good candidate, it's an interesting isle but not usually in anyone's way. Policing the seas could lead to some entertaining stories, heh.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was worried the thread might be lost to the depths of the forums.

I wonder if anyone has any idea on how to go about communicating the safe-zone or agreeing on its location. Would a forum post here work that others could then pick up on and spread in their own discord/group/ circle of friends? How could the forum post be made obvious? How could it be made clear that the change has been made to the safe-zone location?

  • so look for ships to sink at old faithful got it :P

  • I think you might have better luck trying to build a consensus about what the flags symbolize. I'll be curious to see how it plays out. I personally have no intention of honoring a player-decreed safe zone. If you are parked anywhere on the map and we think we can take stuff from you, then we're probably going to attack you. I purchased a game about thievery and danger from other players, not an archeology and FedEx simulator.

  • So personally, I feel that making an actual island a safe zone isn't a good idea. The problem is that you need to think about people who don't want safe'zones as well. People who want to do PvP aren't going to enjoy not being able to do it because they just happened to draw a quest that sends them to "that" island. I feel that you would have this work a lot better if you tried and made a seaport a safe zone instead. They aren't somewhere which gets quests attached to them, meaning that someone who wants to PvP has to go out of their way to attack it. Also, In the day that the update's been out, I find myself spending a lot of time at the seaports, since it's a good area to just park your boat and fish, since you can sell your food right there, plus there's barrels to resupply your bait.

TL;DR If you want a safe space, make it a seaport so people unaware/don't care of them are less likely to attack you. Also fish.

  • @xavier-wisde I would like a safe zone where you can buy things or just hang out and drink, but you couldn't cash in loot because thats just no fun, no risk. Just like a small town with some gambling or some music or heck (Sorry for the language) maybe even some friendly skeletons to offer strange things to you in exchange for some gold.
