Record mode with camera controls

  • So this might be a stretch, and would require some hefty development lifting, but I think it would be worth it give the narrative nature of this game and it's popularity amongst streamers. I also have no idea of the technical feasibility of this, but given that promotional videos seem to use it, I can only imagine it's gameplay possible.

I was thinking it would be really awesome if instead of doing a record of the gameplay, you could set the game to record, and the recording would cover everything in about a 50' bubble of the player recording it. This way, during playback of the video, they could adjust the camera, which would make any upload of the video dramatically more interesting.

Think about it-you're watching a video and instead of seeing the character being attacked randomly, you can see the buildup of a sneaky pirate having stowed away earlier finally making their move, or getting a shark's eye perspective as its preparing to take a bite of your character's keister.

This wouldn't adjust anything gameplay related, but I can only imagine the awesome fan vids that would get posted as a result.

  • That is a fantastic idea, but I highly doubt it would be possible, unfortunately. You would have to 'record' the actual location of every item in the vicinity, in addition to every move that it makes (players, skeletons, bullets and cannonballs flying through the air) in order to re-render the entire scene from a different angle. Just the sheer volume of data needed would probably make this impossible.

The only thing close I can see that might accomplish the same thing would be a 'spectator' mode where you follow other players around, and can look at them from any angle, and record that perspective. But that would screw up gameplay in a hurry, so that is a non-starter too.

  • @arsigi
Yeah, I figured it would be a hard thing to accomplish-and almost certainly a PC-only thing. It's more wishful thinking than anything else.

A spectator mode doesn't seem as far fetched tho. I could see that working for video production, but it would be prohibitively gamebreaking because you know someone would be on a discord with a spectator.

  • @doctorfork Yeah, they've done this with PUBG, but I don't know how feasible it would be for this engine. It's an interesting idea, though.

  • Idk why it should be so hard other than the game not being orignally designed with this in mind, and the size of the map i guess.

Halo 3 had theater mode, fortnite has this ability, overwatch automatically records the top 5 plays you make each day.

Its not like this should be pc only or that hard, i think it just requires a lot of work, that would be better spent elsewhere on a post release game rather than it being pre release, though i think for fortnite this was a later addition and that is using the same design engine as SoT.

Whos to say, but it would be cool for making videos or reviewing tactics and im sure other things.
