PLEASE add VR support!

  • Dear Rare,

like many others I´m a huge fan of Virtual Reality, but also a huge fan of Sea of Thieves.
In my opinion Sea of Thieves is made for VR. It would fit together perfectly.

I know that you devs already said no, because you got motion sick. But motion sickness is something that most people can fix, by train themselves while just playing. My girlfriend got motion sickness too when I first got my VR headset. From time to time she got better with it and now she could play 24/7 like me without getting motion sickness.

Please give this another chance. Most people don´t have problems with motion sickness.

This could be easily one of, if no THE best VR game out there if done right.

Many, many people would buy a VR headset, just for this game and many people who already got a VR headset would buy Sea of Thieves if they didn´t already got it.

It would give Sea of Thieves aswell as VR a nice push.

Rare, please make my dream and the dreams of many others come true. Sea of Thieves VR!

  • Wouldn't work. There is too much movement while in the water and many people would feel sick.

  • @marsmayflower

Okay, what about all the fast paced shooters, racing games and all those trippy mindf*** games in space etc. which are not a problem at all for most people? Like I said. If you´re one of the few who get motion sickness with VR, you can train yourself to loose it in most cases.

Sea of Thieves is way smoother and less hectic than most of the other existing VR games which work fine.

If people would get motion sickness in Sea of Thieves VR they couldn´t play 99% of the VR games out there.

  • @donicger those games dont have you moving like you do when you are on the water.

  • @marsmayflower sagte in PLEASE add VR support!:

@donicger those games dont have you moving like you do when you are on the water.

Well, but there are games like "Lone Echo" in space where you´re upside down, no gravity and more. I think that´s harder to handle than being on the sea. And "Lone Echo" is one of the most sucessfull VR games. Most people don´t have a problem with that.

  • @donicger nothing like water. People would be deathly ill when they stopped playing sot in vr.

@donicger nothing like water. People would be deathly ill when they stopped playing sot in vr.

People who couldn´t handle Sea of Thieves in VR couldn´t handle being on a real ship too.
And still it´s possible to be on a real ship, even if there are some people who can´t handle it. Those who can´t do it, don´t do it. Those who can do it, do it.

Why should people get ill when seeing the sea in VR, when it´s just the same like seeing the sea in real life?
Not everyone gets sea sick in real life, so not everyone would get sea sick in VR.

  • Not the same thing. In real life, your body adjusts to the movement. In vr, you are tricking your brain and body and when you stop playing you then get sick. With as much movement as there is, even the most sea hardened sailor would most likely get sick.

There is already a VR pirate game, called Furious Seas.

Of course it´s nothing like Sea of Thieves, but you can be on the sea too. No problems with motion sickness if you can handle other VR games. Furious Seas is pretty successfull too with only good reviews. No one mentioned motion sickness.

So it wouldn´t be a problem in Sea of Thieves VR too.

Even No Man´s Sky will add VR soon. And leaving or landing on a planet in a space ship is way harder to handle I think.

  • @donicger sure, just eliminate the waves and bobbing like that game does and it will be fine.

  • @marsmayflower sagte in PLEASE add VR support!:

@donicger sure, just eliminate the waves and bobbing like that game does and it will be fine.

The waves and bobbing in Sea of Thieves are not THAT much more. They are more, but not that much more that you would totally get sucked into motion sickness, when in Furious Seas there is no motion sickness at all.

  • @donicger uh, that isn't even close to the wave motion in sot.

Let's take it a different direction. VR is too niche and there just aren't enough people who care.

Let´s take a different direction. You are misinformed. VR is growing more and more.

  • @donicger what percentage of sot players are PC and VR players?

  • @marsmayflower

Thousands of players would get into Sea of Thieves if it would add VR.

The VR community isn´t that small. And like I said, many people would consider getting a VR headset if there would be games like Sea of Thieves VR.

When the game "Beat Saber VR" was released a lot of people got a VR headset, because they were amazed by the videos they saw about it. Same would happen with Sea of Thieves VR if they do it right.

The only reason why VR still isn´t that mainstream like monitor games is because there are only a few popular AAA games.
The more games will come, the more players will get into VR.

  • When I first got SoT, I got so seasick that I tried to get up after playing and legit FELL OVER hahaha! I got used to it though. Think it might be the same with VR?

Also, wouldn't VR be better in a way? I tend to feel dizzy when my surroundings move, but I don't. In a car for example. But when you're wearing a VR headset, you are moving your head around. I could imagine it being okay actually.

  • @donicger I think it would be to much for alot. It's already perfect I think for be everything would need to be downgraded

Could also imagine that in VR you would get less motion sickness than on monitor, since it looke more real to your eyes and your brain can better understand what´s happening when you fully dive into the game instead of seeing both the reality and the game.

Why should a VR version be downgraded? VR versions of a game only take around 10 - 30% more power than on monitor. And Sea of Thieves runs pretty good even on older PCs. A GTX 1070 / RTX 2060 would be totally fine for Sea of Thieves VR. That´s affordable.

  • I gotta admit, that once valve releases their VR headset in may, I'm off to the VR world. VR is most definitely the future. So any game that supports is, would be a plus for me.

  • @trenix90

VR is the future indeed. But you can experience the future now if you want.

Don´t understand why all the developers, gamers, nerds and geeks don´t support VR more, since it´s the best thing what could´ve happened to all of us.

20 years ago we dreamed of being in our loved games. Now it´s possible and the people are not interested.. I really can´t understand that.. It´s not like you need a 3000$ NASA gaming machine and a 5000$ VR headset to get into VR. A 800$ PC + 350$ VR headset is enough. That´s nothing for what you get.

Have fun with your Valve Index! If it´s good enough I may be upgrading from my Rift to Index too. :)

Many people believe that VR is just another trend, that the experience is not optimal or ready for the masses. To be honest, they're somewhat accurate about this, despite them never trying out VR. Anyway the recent lineup of headsets has been a real downgrade. Inside out tracking is certainly not the future, or at least wont be for another decade. We went from 360 tracking, to failing to track behind you, which kills the experience.

Valve is literally the only hope for a optimal VR experience for an affordable price. If they fail to deliver, facebook will push us back another few years. Also the new oculus, both the PC version and mobile, are a joke in so many levels.

  • @trenix90

Yeah I´m sad about the decisions from Oculus too, that they focus more on the low-budget and mobile market.

But there are other companies like Valve, HTC, Pimax, X-TAL, Star VR and Windows Mixed Reality which focus on the high end market.

Virtual Reality is new. We´re at VR 1.0. Of course we can´t expect wireless 8k headsets with 200° FOV and perfect 720° tracking on a 50m x 50m playspace with a price of 300$.

Just give it some time. The first smartphones also didn´t have 40 megapixel cameras on it and see where we are now, only 10 years later.

Even if VR is not perfect it´s still enough to drop my and others jaws pretty often. And it´s still worth the money if you compare the prices with smartphones, TVs and gaming monitors which can´t do what a VR headset can do. You get a whole new experience for that money.

People who think that VR is only a trend that goes over have never tried a good PC VR headset like Rift, Vive or better where you literally can move around.
Or they have played the wrong VR games/apps. All people who tried my Rift were amazed and couldn´t believe what they experienced. Some of them even bought a Rift on the same day. Or the haters are just not clever enough to see the potential in it. The possibilities with VR are endless. We´re only at the beginning. Imagine what VR will be like in 5, 10, 20 years.
Why not support it from the beginning then?

  • If the next generation of Xbox features VR and Microsoft succeeds to have a better Xbox platform on PC, I think Sea of Thieves has some good chance to be one of the first games to promote this Xbox VR ecosystem.

At the moment Microsoft is mostly focused on their cloud gaming system and except their Hololens/Windows MR headsets, they haven't revealed any plan for VR games.

I'm quite intrigued to see how Sea of Thieves could be in VR tho, it would make the experiences and adventures even more fascinating.

I really hope Microsoft gets even more into VR. They shouldn´t let Sony take over the console VR market..

But you´re right. Sea of Thieves in VR would be fascinating. It would fit together sooooo good, I´m sure. The game mechanics, the gameplay, the beautiful water and overall the stunning graphics are like made for VR.

If this doesn´t get a VR version it is given away potential.

As Sea of Thieves is an exclusivity to the Xbox ecosystem, I'm not sure at the moment Rare can do much without any Xbox VR support anyway.

The thing is, VR market is still struggling and that's probably the reason why Microsoft decided to hold their plans for their VR headset for the Xbox One X and stated they don't have any plans for VR on Xbox consoles (I think it was last year at E3). Microsoft is most likely working on a better technology (wireless, less bulky...) with their next gen Xbox ecosystem. Let's wait for E3 to see what are their future plans for Xbox.

  • VR makes many people ill. That will never change because of biology. A VR game where you're constantly bobbing up and down will only compound the issue. I'm fine with VR until I stop playing. Afterwards, I have headaches and am queasy. This isn't about an opinion.

  • @marsmayflower You don't seem to actually have a good understanding of how motion sickness works. I'm sorry that you are unable to find any enjoyment with VR but most people that suffer from motion sickness initially, build an immunity within a month or two of frequent use. It's like getting car sick as a kid, you just get use to it after a while. VR would be a great fit for SoT but the game iself needs a lot more improvment before VR would be worth playing. Rare has made it pretty clear this game is never going meet those expectations however.

And because you don´t like VR others have to dislike it too?

There are many people who can´t ride rollercoasters without puking. Should we ban rollercoasters and amusement parks now?

  • For the naysayers, why not simply sell the VR version of SOT with a bucket? Problem solved.
