Official Sea of Thieves Developer Update: March 28th 2019

I'm glad they decided to delay pets, just imagine the outrage if they launched in complement.

Joe Neate, said in dev update video, March 28th 2019:

"... just trying to figure out how much I gonna need for a pet,
but luckily I got more time to save now."

He said that while counting gold coins!
Did he just tease us and wanted to let us know, that pets will be available via ingame (gold) purchase?

I am glad they will take their time to improve the pets, before they get released.

Being able to purchase them with gold would be awesome,
as I do not like the microtransaction idea at all.

The current theory (at least my current theory) is that along with pets will come Ancient Coins, mentioned several times in the lore sources as the most valuable and rare form of currency in Sea of Thieves. Most likely you can collect a very limited number of Ancient Coins in-game, or pay for them. That way you can get the barest minimum without having to pay a cent in mtx!

Good call with the pets. They need more work.

Interesting theory indeed and I think that could work aswell.

I just do hope they make it possible to earn yourself a pet through
spending time in the game and achieving a certain goal to unlock the ability
to add a pet as your loyal companion.

I will absolutely have no problem shelling out a few bucks. I want to see this game stick around for a long time.

I wish they would go the elite dangerous route and sell livery sets- some really unique and interesting designs. I've spent way more on my ship in elite than I did on the initial price.

Yes, of course. I do understand your point. =)
I would not mind if Rare did add some very special and unique items,
which can be bought via microtransactions. As long as it will not affect the
gameplay mechanics. (pay2win would be awful, but I think Rare wont go that way)

However: I truly believe it would make some people sad or angry,
if pets would be brought into the game via (only) microtransactions.

There are so many things, that could be done with the pets.
Devs could add a way to make them useful, rather than just being "accessories".

But if the pets are actually changing the gameplay and if so, the gameplay starts
to depend on players using their pets, then microtransactions would turn the
pets into "pay2win" or "pay2play" (certain pet related game mechanics).

example:

• imagine your pet monkey strolling around islands
• and after a certain (short) amount of time he would return with some supplies
• he could stand next to you and could hand you wooden planks, food, even cannon balls

This would be really cool - but I think it will only be possible, if Rare will add
the pets without microtransactions. If the player can unlock the pet via gameplay
and commendations or certain goals, then this would actually reward the players
and encourage them to play the game to get their lovely pet companion.

No Arena for me until they sort the crossplay out.

@drfauli I doubt they are going to add any functionality like that. They just need to look more alive and have more connection to the player and the world. You need to be able to pet, speak, play and have some kind of fun with your pet. Pets don’t generally do things for you other than p00p on your rug and other pet like things.
