Remove antomatic mermaids NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How many times are mermaids popping up going to ruin a perfectly good sneaky heist!?

Make mermaids a summon with a new item like a shell horn or something BUT PLEASE remove this horrible system of mermaids popping up all the time when your trying to make sneaky plays!

  • I think that's a bad Idea.

First of all, people (especially new ones and those who don't read patch notes) will be completely confused as to how they would get back to the ship.

Second, those mermaids make it a challenge to sneak on board as opposed to really easy. Besides if you use a rowboat there's no mermaid to come and rescue you, if you're sneaky enough you can just row to the back of the ship attach a rowboat and have no mermaid appear for you at all.

  • They have alrdy said that mermaid where one of the hardest thing's to code into the game. I highly doubt they will change them anytime soon

  • I agree, they should be summoned by a horn or something... Atm they are so annoying when i camping places.

or els make em invis so only the player will see it and not everyone els.

  • @captain-ravrous

Something which has been mentioned a time or two, but I think we need to look at the overall balance of the game and the consequences of something like this.

Mermaids are a useful tool for those who are new to the seas, we know there are plenty of very successful sneaky pirates even with the mermaid as well as quite a few pirates who miss this clue in the water. It adds quite a bit of uncertainty as it is at the moment which leads to a variety of outcomes.

  • @Captain-Ravrous
If you use a Rowboat, Mermaids won't spawn, also, the direction you jump to an island from controls where the mermaid spawns, When you get used to the mermaids, you will be able to control their locations. Good Luck!

  • @hynieth Your wrong on all counts here.
First off it's no excuse to keep a flawed system in the game because Rare are bad at teaching new players how to play their game and you assume they are not smart enough to learn. You trying to justify keeping it the way it is because " new " players would be to dumb to learn a new simple system is no reason at all.

Second the mermaids are NOT in the game to make sneaking a " challenge" it's a mechanic solely for the purpose of giving players a way back onto their ship if they fall off or get left behind by their crew. However a side effect of this it giving away a player's position if they are far enough away from their ship. Trying to add false meaning behind it only show's you don't understand. As for your rowboat method that is also invalid as the rowboat was not in the game for a great deal of time, if you seriously expect to make that statement then your also saying the game had no proper way to sneak to enemy ships until the rowboat was added. There are holes in everything you said you clearly don't have the proper perspective of game design in mind when you made these statements.

The mermaid system is a good system for the intended purpose it's for but it cripples gameplay aspects, thou I would think this was not intended from the start. Rare likely didn't take into account the impact this would have on gameplay and just made this simple automated system without understanding the effect it would have on sneaky gameplay. However this could all be solved with the addition of a tool to just call for a mermaid that is either activatible or not depending on the player's proximity to their ship. SUCH AN EASY FIX!

  • @captain-ravrous I'll disagree as others have, it is a nice way for Pirates to check whether an island is currently inhabited or not.
You like to sneak, I don't like to lose an Athena chest cheaply because another Pirate can simply camp the outpost hoping for a payday!

  • NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used more exclamation marks, so I won.

  • @captain-ravrous

Ahoy mate, mermaids are working exactly as intended in game at the moment. They serve a multitude of purposes, one of which is to alert crews to the presence of pirates in the water, or on an island or outpost.
This cuts down on outpost/island camping and creates more interesting encounters, the system was tweaked already to allow nametags to disappear underwater to enhance 'sneakiness'.

Your only saying you don't want to be cautious or have lookouts in your crew. You want a handheld system that prevents you from getting your loot stolen because you weren't paying enough attention.

Well about the automatic mermaid should not be removed when ships are moving a lot of pirates miss the clue but only when they stand still near an island it catches their eye a lot more but until now I would not say it ruins my sneak attempts.

About the horn for summoning the mermaid I agree on that one sometimes for example when you are fighting a skeleton ship and they throw you off the ship because the ship is close you cannot catch up or need to wait long before it spawns cause you are near the ship. If we get a horn with a cool down (so ofc it cannot be abused) you have a save you need to use wisely to get back on your ship.

    Cheers,
    Tango

  • @captain-ravrous I guess this should be posted.... Again.

  • @katttruewalker Wow I don't believe a word of this for a second, did Rare pay for this reply?

"This cuts down on outpost/island camping and creates more interesting encounters"

Your joking right... this is plain as day the opposite method for making the game more interesting, it's like being a pickpocket but you have bells hanging off your wrists . This contradicts innovative and clever gameplay in so many ways, your basically saying " here is the giant open world where you can try or do whatever you want to succeed in being a pirate but if you try this tactic we'll blow the whistle on you so everyone knows your doing it and can respond." Camping out on islands for unsuspecting ships to come along ARE interesting plays that make for some of the most memorable and satisfying plays the game has to offer. Look at many big time streamers of the game making the sneak plays and catching crew with their pants down and stealing ( like a pirate ) all their treasure! This simple flawed mermaid mechanic does everything it can in it's current state to hinder this type of fun for players.

Your reply literally sounds like your just copy pasting some patch notes you got from Rare whom just want to cover their mistake by saying " it's working as intended" when it obviously a huge annoyance for so many people.

Not really, you however are being very defensive, making straw-man arguments and being rather argumentative with any who oppose your idea... perhaps go and have a read of the Pirate Code, maybe article 4: All crewmates are equal, Let each crewmate be respected as equal...speak openly...

It's hardly a handheld system either is it given that it's a flipping mermaid hidden in the water that you have to actively look out for when approaching an island!?

  • @sshteeve How is pointing out the fact you rely on a system that announces that player's are nearby me being defensive, you don't seem to have a grasp on what being defensive means.

Also what in the world are you even saying when it comes to the " All crewmates are equal, Let each crewmate be respected as equal...speak openly... " How does that have anything to do with this discussion? Your the one grasping at straws here clearly. There is nothing about changing the mermaid system to not announce players proximity to others that has anything to do with that statement. Also how about instead of looking out for a " flipping mermaid in the water " why not keep a look out for players!? The remark ALONE prove right away you depend on this handheld system and are being the one on the defensive because your " easy giveaway " could be taken from you and it actually making an effort to keep an eye out in a cutthroat pirate world game scares you.

I'm glad someone found that, thanks for posting it!

  • @katttruewalker but Katt, you didn't get paid by Rare to copy that post back again did you (in fact - you're not on the payroll at all right?)?!

Just so you can re-read your own post.

If you want a discussion then don't act like someone else is completely wrong when you don't agree with someone, It's immature and frankly insulting. Yes I feel insulted by the post you throw at me and were this not the Internet I'd slap you in the face with a glove to challenge you for a duel!

    1. Apparently people generally agree more with me then with you, judging by the upvotes and the ammount of people debunking you.
    2. I'll just have to direct your gaze to @Little-Squash 's post:

You say I don't know propper game design... I feel like you're just throwing that around to make yourself look good or maybe to feel better about yourself, but as you can see Both Mike and Gregg explain in above post there's a reason for the mermaid popping up without player interaction and it's not just one but multiple reasons.

  • @hynieth yeah but that's not good enough matey, we are all wrong and need hand holding remember. It's CLEAR we are in the wrong...

Sadly not lol, my students are dropping like flies at the moment, so I have more time to spare for Deckhanding.....

  • Well, I see this place is exactly the way I left it.

Demands with extra exclamation points (for emphasis of course) Rudeness, same old arguments and attitude problems, just new faces, and the same old faces trying to keep things civil.

Can't say I missed any of it.

See yiz on March 20th, to see what's up with the update.

OP - would you talk to a real human like that or do you save this sort of attitude for talking to people on the internet? Sort yourself out.

  • Fine you can all enjoy your anti-sneak style gameplay mechanic, end of the day you rely and having your hand held instead of being capable of keeping and eye out. You can rest easy knowing that nobody can sneak up on you because that mermaid will always have your back and keep the scary pirate away.

    Sad

  • @theunionjames it's not making it easier for me it's making the game more fun and have a broader style of gameplay that is fair.

  • @theunionjames It takes no effort for someone to spot a mermaid in the water that gives away players, it does take effort to make the sneak plays. Name any other competitive game with stealth where when you are sneaking to get to someone but when you get close some NPC spawns out of nowhere and tells them you are around here someone better watch out.

  • @captain-ravrous Well many people pull off sneaking with the current mermaid system, I guess you need more practice at it?

  • @katttruewalker said in Remove antomatic mermaids NOW!!!!!!!!!!!:

    @captain-ravrous

Well i never knew that, Thanks for the tip!

  • @captain-ravrous I can sneak up on many, just like countless others :) It is ok to get frustrated if you failed to sneak up on a ship several times and they won the battle, but don't blame Rare, a huge player base is perfectly fine with this mechanic, wish you the best in the seas.

  • @octopus-lime Of course I'm not saying I couldn't be better at sneaking and yes many people do pull it off with the current system however no situation is ever the same. Someone people are just RNG lucky and the mermaid would spawn out of sight or other the other side of an island out of view. But regardless or not being better at it or not, it still doesn't justify the system being the hindrance in the way it is.

You know... I was JUST thinking about you and @LucianSanchez82 and you're full Athena Stealing achievement, won through legitimate means and not cheesed... those mermaids must've been a right pain...

  • @sshteeve Don't tell anyone but I paid the mermaids off ;)

I'm really waiting to hear more about the mermaids, why they're helping us... what bargain was struck with them that ensures they keep appearing, the tales and lore are still just teases, Hmm, and a pair of earrings so I could speak to them would be pretty awesome ;)

This is very true and I'm surprised, given the lore that there is with them, that we haven't seen anything yet.
YES! Those earring from Tales are a useful gift, but I do wonder if that fact that our heroes "lost" the black box has something to do with this deal that has been struck?

OR... perhaps, based on the rhyme we get in game, the Mermaids have an ulterior motive - after all, being there for those sailors in need is a great way to size them up for whether they would make a good new addition?
