Devil's Roar area is unbearable

  • Between gunpowder skellies, volcanoes that erupt every 2 minutes complete with drunk effect while rumbling, island cannons, boiling water, geysers that erupt all over nonstop...this area is not worth the time or better loot. There are so many things that ruin the gameplay. It's nonstop shenanigans that make it hard to focus on quests. This needs to be dumbed down a bit. If you want the way over frequent volcanoes and geysers then maybe remove bomb skellies and gun skellies. Something needs to be done because I'm starting to not even consider this part of the map. It's not fun in the slightest..

  • I disagree. It's a nice change of pace and still the easiest place to make money, IMO.

  • I disagree as well this stuff is good for a pirate themed game and gives you a challenge instead of just getting loot and selling it with no real challenge at all.

  • Actually the area is very easy, if you know what you're doing. In my honest opinion the area is actually far to easy and needs to be more difficult.

  • @yokomoko Are you soloing it? Then yeah, it's a challenge. If you have a crew though it shouldn't be too bad.

  • @yokomoko well it's not every two minutes
you need to play with better skilled people AND not play on a sloop and certainly not a brig and utilize the rowboat
in a galleon have 1 or two person on the ship during eruptions you WILL never sink if they stay below deck and keep your supplies up

ive never lost a galleon to this

sloops and brigs you can get insta killed below deck but not on a galleon

you just need to get better experienced at this part a full athena with good winds on a galleon crew we can do with in the hour it is very quick but you MUST pay attention and think

I understand some folks find it frustrating, and it can be at times. But it's meant to be a challenge. The rewards for adventuring in the Roar are much higher. Those of us who have been playing a while find the challenge refreshing. It's not excessive at all for many pirates. To the contrary, it's exciting, dangerous and aptly rewarding. I do pretty much all my Athena's voyages there. It takes a bit longer, and there are setbacks galore...but I love every minute of it.

Rare did "dumb it down" for a while, after getting feedback like yours. But guess what? The uproar from the players was even louder than before, stating it had become far too easy. It became more like the Devil's Meow than the Devil's Roar. Since that time, they've gradually dialed the heat back up. I think they've got it about right now. Oh, believe me, there are days when I curse those volcanos, especially when I get ping-ponged around the map by constant eruptions. But there are also periods of relative calm, when there's plenty of time to get in and get the job done. It's the uncertainty that makes it exciting.

Sometimes I sail with my crew; sometimes I go it alone. Either way, I think the Devil's Roar should keep on roaring!

  • @yokomoko nah , once you learn the game you will be fine. dw just get a little more experience and it will be easy.

  • The DR was meant as a high level zone with an enviroment treath. And as said higher up in the thread a gally is the ship to be in, try to find a crew at the xbox LFG and stack the ship before heading down there

  • @yokomoko

Ahoy there and thanks for posting your feedback.

I have to agree with the majority above, I very much enjoy the Devil's Roar and voyages there, particularly Athenas at the moment.
It does require you to really pay attention to where you dock your ship, how you react to earthquakes and knowing when to flee for your life and it's definitely something which improves with experience!
A galleon is pretty much indestructible, but even solo you're able to survive if careful, stay on the rocks as much as possible to avoid geysers and use them to get rid of the pesky skeletons instead.

  • @yokomoko I don't agree with that. On the contrary, DR is the most effective, simplest area for all quests. The islands are close by. The locations of the treasures are almost unambiguous. The skeletons kill themselves by stepping into geysers - or they are eradicated by volcanic eruptions.

You only have to deal with volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. This is really not difficult.

  • @the-tonkinese sagte in Devil's Roar area is unbearable:

If you try hard, you'll learn to park a sloop near each island in a manner, it can not / hardly be hitten by volcanoes.

  • @Yokomoko like everyone else in this topic, i disagree with you.
Like @Goedecke-Michel said, it is a much more efficient area to do your athena for example. Multiple maps on the same island, skellies who you can kite in the geysers.

It can be frustrating to sail to an island and it is erupting.. But after the nerf they aren't so frequent and accurate anymore.

  • Agree with op. Still no like mordor :D but i played couple of athena there and i like the looks of the loot and fire caves. I completely dislike the overdone nucleair vulcano eruptions and geysers and looks of the black sad islands..
Its not a happy place for me and i find it annoying.

I go back play with chickens on sailor bounty and leave mordor for the real pirates :(

  • @goedecke-michel it will still get hit but the sloop has a higher chance of survival then the brig it isn't about where you park it it's about blind chance if you are next to an island

  • Also disagree, it's a risk vs reward place, relatively easy to navigate once you know how to deal with the perils.

Well you are not forced to go there if you don't feel like it. Some times my crew want to have a calm session and we switch it up and stay in the rest of the map.

I think the different perils have been "dumbed down" enough already, it used to be way worst. Now I feel it's reasonably balanced.

My fast athena 10 climb disagree's with this statement.

  • The only real thing I find a tad unfair in DR is how the skellys aren't affected by earthquakes; they have no issues walking/running and they can do so in a straight line. It's a minor thing in the end but the rest of the DR is just fine. Heck, make it a little more fun and give the islands some ashen wildlife so we can remove cargo runs from athena voyages.

  • Its meant to be hard [mod edit]

  • it was created with intent on being more of a challenge, and the rewards are higher. and it was also toned down some from when it originally launched. lol

  • I also disagree entirely. With the disconnection and infinite loading screen issues I have been running DR gold hoarders as an alternative to Athena voyages while solo-ing. Being in DR with a skelly ship +/- other PvE (fog/storm) or player ships is definitely a bit much for solo, but it is still managable.

Something I've learned about DR as a very new player to SoT (not even played a month yet) is that you are GOING to sink, a lot, until you figure it out. Especially as a solo player it is important to plan your approaches to a volcano island.

    1. Don't put loot onto the ship until everything on the island is done

    2. If the ground is shaking, you should be moving full-tilt towards your ship without worrying about any loot which should currently be safely stowed in a bush or behind a rock somewhere you can easily find later.

    3. If you hear the gut-churning noise of an eruption starting -drop sails. Your ship should already be un-anchored and pointed directly AWAY from the island.

    4. When moving loot to your ship, start with the highest value items and work your way down.

    5. If you are far away from your ship when the ground begins to rumble, you may choose to die to a geyser or skeleton in order to get to your ship faster.

    6. If you're going to get ganked in the DR you're going to get ganked in the DR. Worry less about enemy ships and don't carry more than you're willing to lose at any time. This way you can focus more on the mission at hand. If you have a crewmember with you then this tip can be ignored.

    7. If you're not doing athena's missions, try to pick and choose voyages with islands that are further west and/or close to the outpost.

    8. Morrow's Peak will also erupt, keep this in mind when parking. Never leave your ship anchored and/or pointed towards the island you are currently on.

I could probably come up with more. Maybe I'll make a solo DR guide.

  • I have no problems apart from the skele ships, aim bot A.I with infinite curse cannon balls is a death for me solo.

  • @yokomoko

You are correct , I never found it fun, more of a hassle and the game should be about fun challenges not repairing and waiting. No one I know went into Devils roar and said that was fun. I know this is an Anecdotal, but 0 out of 40+ players or more is somewhat revealing.

It is much easier for some ship types vs others, galleons with 4 players have no trouble with it and you have 4 people to work with. The majority of players are sloops though from what I have seen not wanting to play with strangers I suppose.

The at sea experience with volcanoes is just repair and wait for 5+ min. This is not fun game play and when designing a game they need to be gauging what a player is doing and how interesting it is. To correct this they should lower the range of the volcanoes to just a bit outside the shore line adding some cover spots on some islands you can park at and focus on the on the land experience.

  • @yokomoko

The only problem I have with the devils roar area is that the volcano auto target you. You are guaranteed to get hit if you are within range. I have lost treasure because of this but it happens. I highly recommend a rowboat whenever you are in the devils roar. Honestly, you should grab a rowboat every chance you get. They have been my saving grace.

Every mission I do is in the devils roar area

  • @yokomoko It's hard. Not worth going there alone. I love it !
    It's a different play style.
Still today it's a worthy challange even for the experienced.

  • The roar is awesome.... I just spent a week solo speed running to hit A10. Plus it's way more friendly there. I bet it's 90% friendly interactions instead of shoot on sight. The only time I'm not there is right when I load in. Way more gold and rep there for the little pirate pups I'm helping on their journeys.

  • @yokomoko I agree with ya. It's not that it's hard. There's nothing hard about waiting 5 minutes for an eruption to end, just to pull up to the island again and have it erupt, so I go wait another 5 minutes. It's not hard, just boring. My buddies and I not-so-affectionately nicknamed the place the "Devils Chore"

  • @Deckhands you may want to drop the anchor on this one

  • @droper666 In addition to lowering the range, they need to make the eruption last like 60 seconds or so, then have a cooldown on it to where it doesn't erupt again for at least like 10 minutes or something. Right now it is just boring.

  • It definitely takes getting used to. I played through the majority of my progress in the Devil's Roar solo. I find it exciting and much more worthwhile than the rest of the map. You need to be more aware of your situation, plan your islands, and go fast.

  • As a solo player primarily, i find the devils roar to play to my advantage against a galleon.

You see many galleons neglect to repair the upper deck.
If you hit them with a ballast ball they’ll sink very quickly before they even know what has happened.

I regularly patrol the devils roar to hunt galleons and its been a fair few times a ballast ball has ruined them very quickly.
