Flags and their meanings

  • I have seen a few websites that list each of the flags that can be flown on your mast and what each of them mean.

    Is there an official listing for what they mean to other players? HERE is a reddit post that lists them. Is that accurate?

  • @roastincoffee Ahoy matey!

    There are no official meanings behind any of the flags, the flags are what the community/current player makes of them.

    I know a lot of players just fly the Jolly Rodger because its a piratey flag, and mean nothing by it... however, others, fly it because they are the menaces of the sea!

  • @musicmee So there really isn't a widely accepted "fly this if you are friendly" flag?

  • It all comes down to: It's the colour I like and the ones I find pretty :-)

    To be honest the only flags that have any meaning is the Reaper flag and the Alliance flag as they have a function in the game. The other flags are just aestetics and you should make of it what you want.

    Don't over think it. Rare gives us tools to make our own adventures and we use those tools to make our ships prettier.

  • @hynieth

    Tools not rules!

    @RoastinCoffee Aye, the widely accepted flag of peace is the white one... however.. that does not guarantee anything! Take nothing for granted and treat every encounter as the first time.

  • @musicmee It's unfortunate for those who just fly the Jolly Roger and mean nothing by it that there are those who gun for those boats. I'll admit I'm more inclined to sink a ship with the Jolly Roger, myself.

  • @roastincoffee Generally, you can fly the Bilge Rat flag or the white flag if you're friendly (although, I usually take the latter to mean, "You surrender? Okay, I'll be takin' your stuff then..."). But, apart from the Alliance Pendants (which can also be used as lures), there is no set meaning to any of the flags.

  • @bran-the-ent Yups, I've been gunned at bacause I happen to like flying a certain colourful flag. I've also heard some colourful language from those people and they all went to Davy Jones' locker.

  • This has been discussed a lot and there is not a real consensus, nor an official declaration on what each flag means.

    As stated above, it is for interpretation.

    IMO, treat flags the same way as someone using the "WE'RE FRIENDLY" chat wheel.

  • @dyfrin Yep... with many, many grains of salt.

  • The way I see it is:
    If they fly the Alliance flag their friendly, if they've got the Reaper's Mark up their enemies, if they have a standard flag up don't trust em.

  • All flags are pirates.

    You can only trust the jolly roger they are clear about being pirates.

    Other flags show their interest or are a pirate trick to fool you.

    Alliance flag could be for enjoying a alliance or it could be pirates who want to see all ships so they can hunt them.

    White flag could mean i surrender or leave me alone or peace... or its a pirate camouflage..

  • @roastincoffee not really... The flags have the meaning you give to them.
    It can change from players to players...

    Only the alliance flag has a real general meaning.
    The rest depends of your RP.

    There are some with it's purpose on the flag description:

    • The shark says it's for people hunting the Hungering One;
    • The Bilge Rat says it's for people doing BR Adventures;
    • The Mercenary says it's for people doing mercenary voyages;
    • And obviously the White generally means surrender or parleys;
  • personally i put the reapers mark for pvp and an offer alliance flag for when im just trying to chill. But other than that i just do it for looks. Want a pure black ship? Ghost hull, black sails, and stick that black flag up there. Thats about it
