Front firing cannons coming?

  • I think it's safe to say the changes on the ships are for front firing cannons. I was first really happy when I first saw them as mainly a sloop user. "Finally we will get a combative advantage" I thought.

But then I see it's the same on all of the ships. And this has me concerned. We that mainly use a sloop are at a huge disadvantage on the sea. Our only advantage is our turn rate and speed in headwind.

We lack speed, firepower and manpower on the sea to be a threat.

So seeing this being something all the ships get, has me concerned. It will make it even harder for sloops to get away. And I think it should be something only the sloops should have to give them a combative advantage when they lack so much compared to the other ships.

That said it could be for something completely different. But the cutouts fits perfect for cannons...

  • I know a lot of people think they are for cannons, and a lot think they are a platform for fishing.

I am not sure what their main purpose is, but it they are cannons I hope they do not accept any sort of Cursed Cannonballs as that would be ridiculous.

  • Nicely spotted,

Someone already beat you to the punch tho :-P

  • @archangel-timmy

    Platform for fishing? Sounds strange?

Yeah I can only imagine how much harder it will be for sloops when you can be shoot at from behind as a galleon or brigantine comes at full speed. Shot from behind by ships that out sails you substantially and with superior firepower.

  • @binaryplayerone It sounds odd, but it is all over Reddit and these here forums.

All I know is that I like them as they are now for docking as it is an easy point of access to/from the ship :)

  • I'll eat my hat when its cannons. Only thing I think we can agree on its not cannons :D

  • Not canons; harpoon or fishing or something along those lines no doubt. It looks bad aesthetically tbh... but whatever.

Have you noticed you can’t do the sword thrust from them? It does make docking to sell in an emergency easier as easier to jump aboard, so that’s something.

  • People think they want forward cannons, but they are a world of balance issues waiting to happen. I can just picture the forums now, "I can't run anymore!" or "This ship won't stop chasing and sinking me!"

  • @binaryplayerone Front firing cannons would be a really boring decision in my opinion. Considering they're teasing it so early I'd really like to think Rare can be a little more ambitious/imaginative with what they have in store for us.

  • I remember coming across a glitch at launch where a mast had fallen and was blocking my path to get from the bow to the stern. Could we finally be getting sail/mast damage?

  • @cpt-parr0t-head
I don't think so, Cursed Cannons already have take the place of that with a Sail ball, Helmball, and Anchorball. This is Rare's form of ship crippling.

  • @binaryplayerone Was thinking about, when fishing update drops in (and probably along with cooking), you will have to travel in open water to be able to cast a fishing rod and fish, so those cuts in the front could be for that, even tho it kinda looks like you can fall from the ship if you keep going towards them, you can't actually (only if you jump). The cutout has the perfect length to see around and fish.

There is a lot to come to Sea of Thieves this year, and they will reveal some new features and items on March 20th. Cannot wait!!

I'm pretty sure that's all they are for. They can make it easier to board or exit, especially on to another ship.

  • Fishing and/or harpooning, as well as ease to board other ships without an obstruction, not cannons. Bow/front cannons would create a huge disadvantage to sloops - to all ships really. Harpoons could be used to hunt megs, be towed by them, or to stick into ship hulls, causing course deviation, slow down, and hull damage during a chase.
Fishing while sitting seems an obvious possibility too.

  • My guess is it will be a harpoon. Not a cannon and it will have pvp and pve applications. My guess is it will be for hunting PVE whale/shark/fish and for attaching your ship to an enemy's. I'm guessing.

  • i made a ship concept and changed it based on feedback i had gotten. one suggestion was a front facing cannon, but a majority believed it would give an unfair advantage since pursuing other ships is common.

in case you are wandering, here is the concept:

  • @binaryplayerone

If you look at the deck just behind where the rail once was, you will see a small box on the deck, similar to the marking of where the rail goes. This perfectly fits a small pillar for mounting a rail-mounted cannon or harpoon to. Not full size cannons, maybe not even capable of hull damage. Just small anti-personnel weapons or harpoons to grapple things.

  • I thought it might be for becons like the ones on islands and the ferry

  • @ajm123 We already have lanterns for that...

  • But why are they patching it in even now ? It looks so ugly without the lanterns and this big hole at the front.

  • I don’t think it’s for cannons, harpoons, or swivel guns. I don’t see that the game needs them, and there would be balance issues.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence they rolled out at the same time as non-functional stoves in every ship. They can’t simply be cosmetic. Therefore I believe the slots are likely related to fishing. This is an often requested feature.

  • @binaryplayerone

Hmm, I don't think cannons, I'm with the harpoon option - but maybe you can mount different items there?

You can see something here in the prototype version of the game as well.

  • @katttruewalker hhhmmm

I haven't figured out how to post a picture.

  • Im hoping for Harpoons either for use on Meg or on ships.

  • @katttruewalker Those objects in the prototype might resemble swivel guns. Hard to say really.

  • I like the idea of using the alleged harpoon to attach ships to one another in pvp scenarios. Could give us a more realistic boarding mechanic.

  • I too like the Harpoon ideas along with the Swivel gun suggestions.
I be swaying towards Harpoons on a Swivel type base but that's just me best guess.

I'd like to see the addition of Fishing along with differing fish types both large and small, the thought of hunting me down some Marlin or Tuna, even Lobster crate-ing for my collection of fine Legendary Soup dishes to be served from me "lil old" Soup Sloop.

Alas the cut outs and kitchen additions to Brig and Sloop got this Pirate all giddy.

Much as I understand whete you’re coming from, there’s nothing realistic about mounted harpoons on a pirate vessel. Pirates didn’t use any such thing, for multiple reasons. Foremost, although hand-wielded harpoons are ancient weapons, ship mounted harpoon guns didn’t exist in the Golden Age of Piracy. Secondly, harpoons were used for whaling. Whaling was a very specialized field. Pirates were not whalers. Thirdly, even modern harpoons would not work for stopping a sailing vessel. Harpoons are specifically designed to penetrate the soft blubber of a whale, not a sturdy wooden hull.

Moreover, harpoons would be completely out of place in Sea of Thieves.
