@yoitsdeadpool Why? I could understand if it was for the Arena, since it's supposed to be competitive, but why for casual?
@yoitsdeadpool Stats in any form will create a split in the community even more. It happens in any game that has stats, private or public.
Elitist that only care about stats will start to pop up. Then the players with low stats will be discriminated against. Happens everytime.
Even for the Arena I hope there are no stats. Its better for the community this way.

How can you not have stats for an Arena type game? If something as big as Dota 2 or Fortnite completely eliminated their stats just to appease (sorry but this viewpoint is a minority against the large audience that is driven to those games) it would really hurt the sport of competition. The guy in the damn trailer talks about the competition aspect. Humans are naturally competitive.
I'm sorry everyone, but I really don't see why having stats is such a bad thing. Do you think elitists (negative people) don't already exist in SoT? I mean, we don't have to publish our stats to the world on some kind of leaderboard, but for each pirate to track progress in terms of pvp is still not a bad thing. Even if someone boasts about their stats, why should it bother you? You already enjoy the game as is, no? It doesn't matter now, and it shouldn't if its added (if stats don't matter to you to begin with).
SoT has an elemental feel to it.
A big part of this is the lack of numbers. You have no HUD. No readouts, no map key or aiming reticle. Just the tools and weapons in your hands. There is no dashboard on your vessel. Your ship isn't powered by a motor. It's made of wood and pushed by wind and sail. Your rounds fired are represented by a ghosted bullet not a number.
There is just ships inventory, gold and doubloons.ATM your pirate exist in a world not reliant on statistics, with no active incentive for pvp.
We will see what the Arena brings.
@yoitsdeadpool No. No. No. We're all the same. No bragging, no showing off, no elite-forming statistics. Take a look at the pirate codex - everyone is the same and should remain so.
I can see why people would want this but I agree with @Xultanis-Dragon here.
It's bad enough that you hear of LFG posts which ban anyone from joining who doesn't have 1 million miles + sailed.
I don't want to see more stat based elitism creep in with KDRs etc.
Especially when the best crew members are sometimes the ones with absolutely no experience but who are willing to listen and eager to learn.
A halfway house that I'd be ok with would be for stat based titles, e.g. sail 1 million miles get a certain title, kill x number of players get a title, sink x number of ships get a title and so on. There already is some of this to an extent but it could be expanded to include other gameplay milestones.
Something that you can use to keep track of your development but not something you can easily use to dismiss other players as worse than you. SoT just isn't that sort of game.
A brand new player could be the only person paying enough attention to spot that box of secrets as you sail past, or that Galleon sneaking up on you. Levels, stats and hours played don't tell you the full story about what someone might have to offer your crew.
My opinion would be maybe having stats for Arena but not the game in general. Stats can be misleading. For instance, how many times have you had low health and just killed yourself in some form to replenish your health instead of eating bananas? That would give you a poor K/D ratio and you may not be a bad player.
Personally, i'm fine with no stats period. I play to have fun and stats do not interest me.

Games like PuBG and Fortnite are strictly PvP. The whole objective is to kill and be the last one standing in the end. The same with all competitive games. Even Dota 2 the goal is to kill and be the last ones standing.
This game has no such RULE. You don't have to be the last one standing. If you really did not want to, you could go days without having to fire a shot at a single player ship. This game is not pure PvP like those games are. This is PvPvE.
Humans are very competitive. This is true. I've stated this fact multiple times in other threads for years in other games. However, Humans are competitive, vain, selfish, incredibly predictable, and horribly stupid. We are super dumb. The behavior of the player base is completely predictable after stats are revealed. Its not an if, its a definite fact.
You argue that "I mean, we don't have to publish our stats to the world on some kind of leaderboard, but for each pirate to track progress in terms of pvp is still not a bad thing. Even if someone boasts about their stats, why should it bother you? You already enjoy the game as is, no?"
I know what stats will do to this game as it does with every game. What part of the stats do you believe will stay private? You know humans are competitive, but also vain. So what do you think we humans will do with stats telling us how good we are? We will compare stats. Even if the game itself doesn't make a leader board the player base will make one. They always do.
Next after we have the stats, which were either private or public, will start the separation of the player base. This is where competitive nature collides with selfish nature. Right now people will mostly play with other players without any issue. The only real separation we have at the moment is mileage, levels, and age. Which is still manageable and doesn't really hurt the player base.
However, with the selfishness and competitiveness what happens when players know their KDR? They will demand to only sail with people with X amount of KDR. I mean why play with someone who is bad at the game and will bring you down like an anchor? Which make it harder for players who play support roles to find groups.
Then the high level players will slowly start to close ranks and stick together. The mid and low levels will start to come together but will be completely outclassed by the high level players. Thus another type of separation happens which is good players vs not so good players.
So then the next option for Rare is to actually add away to separate rankings. They will have to add an MMR to make things fair because if you know your stats then humans will know where they stand in the pecking order and will demand to not be against such "hardcore" players. No one wants to play a one sides slaughter, they like things fair. You know, because it has to be "fair" right? Players will complain about it big time. "Why am I set up against such good players? My crew mates are just casual players. This is not fair."
Then in the forums we will have people arguing and heaven forbid someone with a 0.5 kdr says anything. He will automatically be alienated by the 2.0 kdr players. Then a scenario of "Hey why should we listen to you? You suck at the game. I'm better than you so that means I'm smarter and my opinion is fact and your opinion is just garbage." Welcome to elitist ville.
This game is Sea of Thieves. Not CoD, PuBg, Fortnite, League of Legends, Dota 2, or any other heavy competitive type game.
Sea of Thieves does not need stats for the player base. It should not have stats for the player base. For the health of the game and the players, do not add stats. Not even for the Arena.
"Games like PuBG and Fortnite are strictly PvP."
Again, when the next update called "The Arena' is coming out, I can expect it to be a PvP-focused mode. And it will be. Its apparently going to be a scavenger-hunt meshed in with a competitive PVP mode using our ships.
"However, with the selfishness and competitiveness what happens when players know their KDR? They will demand to only sail with people with X amount of KDR. I mean why play with someone who is bad at the game and will bring you down like an anchor? Which make it harder for players who play support roles to find groups."
That happens in all games. Usually, it doesn't come down to Stats. There is a very small percentage of people in PuBG or Fortnite that won't play with people that have a certain K/D. But again, this game doesn't adhere to KD. If you're losing bad on one server, you can switch servers. There is no victor when everyone is dead on a server.
Again, it seems like you're using a very marginal group to set the standards of a game to avoid having those people in our community. I've been playing since before The Hungering Deep. I have met countless players that fit your narrative without having an K/D stats up. So, I don't understand your point-of-view.
People that play fortnite that require X amount of K/D in order to group up with them, are good players, but still are not professionals. I don't know what Arena will bring but it seems like Rare wants to enter the MOBA market with the SoT uniqueness to it. Its a smart move in a sense because not everyone likes SoT adventure mode but they might with The Arena. Who knows.
@lord-szarvas Do you even consider yourself a hypocrite when you debate or do you just ignore it completely?
You say I'm using a marginal group to set standards. What are you basing your argument standards on then? No one? I can only guess since you are repeatedly saying I'm using some marginal group that you yourself are just speaking from nothing? If I'm talking about a marginal group who are you talking about then?
It happens to all games and it always comes down to stats. IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT STATS. The first thing people look at when they lose is at the stats of their team. Its always and will always be about stats. How are you so ignorant of this fact?
You talk about human nature than completely ignore it the next second.
Here is a thing for you. Why do you care about stats anyways? Unless its to stroke your vanity and ego, because that is the only reason you would want it right? Go ahead prove me right
No thanks, I don't think stats of this sort would benefit the game in any way, we do already have some stats available on the Xbox app and occasionally Rare have published interesting stats about various other behaviours in game.
Sea of Thieves is a pirate game set in a fantastical world, a shared world adventure game, the focus being on adventures and shared stories within the world, not the numbers.
I could see this becoming a destiny-esk app. Like you log in and link your character. Then your pirate comes up on screen. Then have a set of accommodations you have earned and are close to getting, have a set of stats with killed X sharks/skeletons/meg/kraken using X item. And a kill death ratio with other players. This would actually be interesting. Then for those that complete an updated story will get a small bit of lore about that dlc that wasn’t very obvious. Such as give a detailed story as to how the skeleton ships were raised and the method used or captain logs of the ashen crew as the killings took place and lead to the founding of the outpost. Or for those that did the meg have a little thing containing metrics journals and maybe an after meeting with his son. And for the cursed statues have a section on mermaids. Then have this all be available as well in game in the captains room book shelf. Would be cool!

Well I know Fortnite has thousands of players that play it each day. And I know that a majority of those players are not on the leader boards (because you can only really have 100 in the top 100). And, I'm basing some of what I am saying off of experience. I went to a fortnite Discord and I saw maybe 25% of the community strict about having a 2.0 K/D just to play with them in a 4 player base.
What I am saying is you're right in the sense that there are elitists out there that only care about STATS, but what I think you're making that a central theme in games that don't exist. There are so many players in PuBG and Fortnite that play it just for fun. And not everyone is good at FPS yet thousands of players still play those games. Ask any of them, you don't have to take my word for it. Those games are popular for a reason.
I don't know why you're so fixated on hiding stats from people. I go to the gym and work out. I keep a mental track of what weights I use because I like to know where I am at in terms of strength and I can see if I'm getting worse or better. That's just how it is. People like to see stats for things just because. If a bodybuilder came up and started laughing at me I'd swear at him or ignore him, but it doesn't happen. In games, sure people are more aggressive behind computer screens because they know if they said the same thing in person they might get knocked out.
The point is; you have the option to ignore those people (like I said, that already exist in SoT. There are elitists still in there. Not Athena 10? Not playing with you. Not a PL? Get out of here). Who are you arguing with here?
What the hell do you think 'The Arena' is all about? It would be crazy if they didn't include stats in the mode. Its an Arena! You think people are going to play just for the gold or the opportunity to kill more on screen? Get outta here!! That's just silly if you believe that will or should happen.
@lord-szarvas
Dude you are arguing around my point. We can ignore those players who want to play the elitist card this is true, but it will still cause unnecessary discrimination in the future regardless of what you want. The games level of discrimination against each other in the player base will only get worse.
The Arena is going to be the worst of it. "Oh hey I play on Arena which is the REAL SoT, my stats are proof that I am better than anyone else in Adventure mode blah blah"
Are you telling me that their are reasons to have stats beyond just vanity?? There are none. Its just vanity.
Why would I want to add any sort of discrimination to the game for the sake of appeasing someones vanity? Thats all stats do. The discrimination will start small and then continue to grow and then thats all we have, stats.
You are right, you could just ignore those elitist/troll players. That is completely true. You could also just ignore your need to see your stats. Since you know, its just stats?? It goes both way, you want players to ignore the discrimination, you can ignore the want to look at your vanity stats.
EDIT Also 25% of the player base turning elitist is not a small number.
Also I apologize for coming off a little strong. I re-read what you posted and then re-read what I posted. I could have toned down my response a tad. Kitty puked on the carpet AGAIN. He does this all the time. He ignores the hardwood which is like 6 inches the other direction from where he decides to puke and nope...he goes the extra 6 inches just to puke on carpet.......one of these days I'll shave that cat in revenge lol
If you think I am arguing around your point, then you need to re-read again and again. Elitists already exist. People want to play with PL's only or Athena 10's only. Or, at the very least, they don't want to show newbies how to play the game. This happens with most games out there. And, guess what, the internet breeds discrimination and toxicity (which I agree with you, it sucks and I hope it doesn't happen).
I just think you're confused and you isolate that because of... stats. Sorry, I don't agree, and I don't think many would agree with you on that.
"The Arena is going to be the worst of it. "Oh hey I play on Arena which is the REAL SoT, my stats are proof that I am better than anyone else in Adventure mode blah blah""
You just proved what I have been saying all a long. You and I do not make Sea of Thieves. We are a part of the community, as you know. Rare makes the game. And they are using their precious dev-time away from Adventure mode into what you already concluded as the "worst of it."
What do you think is harder for Rare to make? An entire content update with a new game mode? Or recording player stats and giving the records to the players in a simple UI screen? Obviously the new game mode.
I'm not saying Stats are strictly for this or that. That is for each player to determine that for themselves. I know it isn't vanity for me if I use it. I know for a fact that my KD sucks overall. Those damn exploding skellies get me every time. But, if the stats show player K/D, I think I would be a little bit better but I honestly don't know.
@lord-szarvas You hope it doesn't happen but we both know it will.
Next if its not for vanity then for what do you want stats for? The only reason is vanity. Thats it. You want to see how well or bad you are doing? Thats vanity.
There is absolutely NO benefit to releasing stats. There never was in any game. They only do it to feed peoples need to know. To feed their vanity.
Internet breeds toxicity this is true. However, we don't have to fuel the fire. Most toxicity in the game community comes from competitive gaming and its because of stats. Thats it. Its always stats.
Stats will just make it worse man. I just see no reason that we should have them. Even for Arena. There is not one valid reason you can give me.

Again, what are you arguing? What do people request all the time on the forums? End-game. Progression.
We already have commendations (achievements). We check them for the same negative-leaning reason, to see our achievements. That is what Rare has given us. Stats are just your on-going record. Sure, you can improve your KD. But the majority of people that play Dota...Fortnite....PUBG probably don't have good stats. They play it just to have fun. Just like we do with SoT!!
And like I already said, there are people that only want to play with other Pirate Legends or Athena 10s. They are so few though. And they probably think they are better than everyone else. I'm a PL and Athena 10. I wear starting clothing and I use the Sailor title. I never use levels as an excuse for myself personally.
You're in this mindset of fear and are worried about a perception that adding something that is already common in the gaming industry will ruin this game. Its a bad argument, sorry.
You have a lot of good ideas. I've seen you on the forums in other threads. But, I don't understand why you and people like you are so opposed to simple feedback/suggestions. It really is, simple stats.
I like the idea of stats but Rare does not because that would split the community. I think a ship log would be better. Having times arrived at places and time left. Notes of what is stored/taken who did it and when. It would do the same for when treasure is placed on the ship. It would also note when someone kills another player or when a ship is sunk and even how many skeletons were killed on that voyage/ship.
@xultanis-dragon they kind of already do, 240 wins you get special blunder, 240 as Pl you get a fancy sword and other weapons. So your wrong now you have the triumphant set.
Ahoy maties!
