What do you want me to do? PVP is too restrictive to enjoy.

  • I get it, PVP is a big part of this game...And I hate it.

I really want to love this game, but the PVP is killing me. While I understand and appreciate the PVP aspect, it is way too present and restrictive. My wife and I tried to play and we were very excited to start. We get a quest and jump aboard our little sloop. We examine the map and set sail. We arrive at our destination. Suddenly another ship appears. Somebody requests that we don't resist. We don't. They blast away at our little sloop and kill us. Great...

So we respawn and head to sea again. We reach our destination and start to explore. A ship pulls up and a crew blows us away without saying a word.

I'm starting to see a pattern here. And it's a pattern I'm not fond of.

So I log off and stop playing.

Now, I'm sure a lot of you reading this are going to criticize my ability or ridicule my sensitivities, but in my opinion that is terrible game experience, especially for a new player. Where is the incentive to play again or recommend this game to others if this is what happens every time I log in?

There needs to be some way to alter PVP to improve the in game experience. Because getting slaughtered and losing everything every time I log in is not fun. I know a lot of you get off on messing with noobs like me, but that type of activity is what drives new players away. The same thing happened to DayZ, once a vibrant interactive game, but then everybody turned to 'Kill On Site' strategies and it killed the player base.

  • I particularly cannot understand players who do not like PvP in an online game. In this game we do not have PvP all the time, in fact, the least we have is PvP. In a game of 12 hours, we only have PvP if we stay a long time without looking at the boat or if we are in a fort or something, Of these 12h we have 30 minutes of PvP, and we only have if we fight back, or else, just run away, just look around every 5 minutes and see if you have no players coming toward us. I sometimes spend all day looking for a fight and don't find.

  • @darkjedirebel I think neither is a matter of experience in this game, but basic strategy for life. If we are in hostile territory, for example a city where the rate of assaults is high, it is common to be attentive to the surroundings. Sea of Thieves, as the name says, is full of thieves. There are a dozen ways to avoid them. No one likes to be robbed, attacked or sunk, no one. But it's part of the game.

  • When this happens, try changing servers. Not all are out for blood, but the occasional server with the aggressive pirates does happen. It doesn't sound like you had much invested other than maybe some supplies. Jump to a new server and try again. I would also suggest seeking a crew of like minded pirates on LFG. I'm sure, with some patience, you can find one or two more that will fit with your crew.

I do encounter the hostile and, depending on the crew I'm with, will fight them if timing is right. Otherwise, there are ways to run. Turn the sloop into the wind and move.

  • @darkjedirebel You say in one post that hostile players ruin the game and people are leaving because of this type of action. Then in your next post you state that it's all you do. You jump on, seek other players, take their loot and log off. Which is it? Are you the problem or are you a solution?

  • A lot of time you don't see other ships nearly that much, and sometimes you even run into friendly pirates.

  • @darkjedirebel I don't believe you've been playing much. I've experienced hostile players plenty but I've started playing this month and I've seen all types of players. I'd say 1/3 of servers I get on are fairly peaceful. On my first day, earlier this month, a crew helped me out and stocked me up since I was obviously very new. They were all PL's and it seemed like that was their entire mission, that day. I've randomly joined PL's doing Athenas, and I've joined kids who were clueless. I've used discord and I've used Xbox party chat and I've played quite a lot this month.

Your experience is what you make it.

  • @shagitall Try sail to the Devils Roar, South East side of the map.
It’s usually a fair bit quieter how ever it is abit more tricky in the PvE side. So keep your eyes open and ship supplied.

I do understand where you are coming from to an extent, the game has a very steep learning curve and can be very hard to master.
I would recommend using the group finder or the find a crew section on the forums and try and get a Galleon going.

The sloop is the hardest ship in terms of PvP and usually when bigger ships see them they see an easy target and head straight for them. There’s little honor in the move but it happens anyway.

Keep at the game mate, it does get better and through the hard times you will learn new tactic and strategy’s.

Also as a side note, there is an update launching on the 6th of Feb what will be addressing some concerns with combat.

  • @shagitall @KnifeLife has made some excellent points! I've also noticed how much more quite the Roar is compared to the other three "zones." As Knife said though keep in mind it's a lot more challenging from a PvE stand point because you have volcanoes, geysers, earthquakes, lava, and super heated water to deal with. However, if you can master the Roar you'll find yourself earning twice as much gold, twice as much rep, and dealing with noticeably less players.

If all else fails, reach out to a few players on the Xbox looking for group page or here on the forums. There are tons of us out there that would be more than willing to show you the ropes and get you accustomed to how the game works! Once you get a feel for it your whole perspective can change!

Shoot me an message some time if you and your wife are interested in grouping up. My crew always has room for new pirates!

  • @JE0RGIE-P0RGIE

Shoot me an message some time if you and your wife are interested in grouping up. My crew always has room for new pirates!

Think I might have to take you up on that offer some point if it’s an open one :P
I’m that bad at the game, I may aswell be new if that helps 😂

  • @shagitall
Never fear...these bumps in PvP correlate closely with boredom.
When there hasn't been an update or content release..the seas get salty..the population shifts more towards PvP and a small shift is enough to cause a jump in these kinds of experiences.

The next few months is going to show a big change in PvP on the "adventure" servers as "athena" is going to pull a huge chunk of players over to that game mode/server.
This will attract most of the PvP style players, streamers, etc.
I'll assume that a few months after that...the balance between 'adventure' and 'athena' will settle once more.
Bringing some PvP focused players back to 'adventure'.

And, there's been some mentions, even officially, that new 'personal' servers are getting emphasis.

  • @knifelife, I'd be honored to sail with you! I might be a bit busy the next couple of nights due to school but my crew and I sail pretty frequently, heck even if it's just me I'm always down to sail. Add me over Xbox Live and we'll set something up!

  • Its super hard sometimes sneaky slooping around and always on guard for the horizon to spot them pirates and to make sure our boat is on a safe distance..

Today i was at crooked mast and 3 times i had to sail away because other ships sailed by..

Most of them are pirates :"(

But as long as you keep on the move its not so easy for them to catch you.

  • lol that was only 2 ships, what you gotta learn to do is keep an eye out. dont just roam islands blindly. you havent even said that you tried to fight back, so how are you going to complain about pvp from 2 fights where you didnt even try? have you ever played a pvp game before? listen what you gotta do is play more, expect pvp, be ready for it and fight and defend your ship. people wont always attack you, sometimes its better to run. if you play the game more you will learn.

  • @shagitall
Don't be fooled; while there certainly is a PvP element, there is a lot of positive social elements too - it just depends on who you are matched with on the server. It's kind of like real life - not everyone is bad, and not everyone is good. The point of the game though is to make your own adventures. With that in mind, I would like to ask you this: would a brave hero or adventurer stick their head in the sand, tuck their tail between their legs, or stand absolutely frozen in place when confronted with a dangerous challenge?

    NO!

They fight back! And live again to fight another day (and to tell about the story after)! The very idea that you just did what they wanted after it was already obvious that they were up to no good personally baffles me. This is an open-world sandbox game. It's your choice! You could've fought back! You could've run! You could've talked them down! You could've struck a deal! You could've found another server! You had options, and you froze up! Yes, it is obvious that you're new, and that's not a bad thing. However, when you froze up, they not only saw an opportunity to get what they wanted, they saw an opportunity to remove the weak (no offense) because in their mind, you're not a worthy challenge. So, step up! You don't have to fight, but at least do SOMETHING! Anything is better than nothing!

You gave up before barely starting, and you're here posting about it telling us about how you're giving up again! So tell me - are you going to step up? Or are you going to step out? Ultimately, the choice is, and always has been, yours to make.

Personally, I like the idea of going on an adventure. That's my choice. And yes, that adventure will have its dangers, but I expect that (because it's literally the name of the game), and I'll be ready. Will you?

  • @targasbr

Your clearly playing a different game than me and OP, I literally cant do anything in this game without being aggro-ed every 15-30 minutes 9/10 logins, the only thing I have even remotely found that works is server jumping until I find a light server and then head to Devils Roar. The reason the outcry for PVE exists is because this is a common experience, and more times than not its aimless pvp for the sake of just ruining peoples day. I cant count the times ive had people kill me at outposts while in stores or just spawned in.

New thing ive started experiencing tonight was on 3 different servers high level players were guarding skeleton fortresses, not doing them just hanging out and attacking me and anyone else that came in. The one I watched aggro 2 other boats, and then I came back several times only to find them still there waiting. I went past at a distance to see if they would aggro me and did. Didn't fire any rounds or even approach them. If I went anywhere near the fortress the were attacking and would go back to guarding once they killed someone.

  • @shagitall I'm with you 100% on this, i have been playing a lot lately but to the point i don't want to play this game anymore when i have people camping at outposts and shooting me just to steal my loot i worked an hour for. There needs to be a balance especially with outposts maybe make them a safe zone where people cant kill one another. It also frustrates me that i have two sons that try to play this and every time they do they just get attacked constantly by people who are swearing and laughing the whole time. It's to the point where most people starting out cant even get a feel for the game and quit before they even have a chance to enjoy it. PVE servers are needed or make the outposts a sanctuary perhaps where one cant be killed once docked in the outpost waters, open seas i get being able to attack and get away but there has to be a safe area.

  • @targasbr said in What do you want me to do? PVP is too restrictive to enjoy.:

I particularly cannot understand players who do not like PvP in an online game.

I'm not sure why this is all that hard to understand. People play games for all different reasons. Some people are competitive, some aren't. There's a lot of complex psychology at play when it comes to direct PvP. I mean, think about it. We're simulating extreme violence. Even in a comic-bookish game like Sea of Thieves, the emotional responses one experiences from PvP in a game are not all that different from real-life. That's heavy stuff. It can be a good thing and it can be a bad thing.

Sea of Thieves is tremendously appealing to a wide variety of people. It has a lot to offer the gamer who isn't necessarily into PvP. The gorgeous seas and landscapes, the sense of adventure and excitement of discovery, the freedom of the pirate life...it appeals to the child in all of us. For many (myself included), that's what the game is really about. That's the part that matters. The other stuff is fun, too, but we don't play the game specifically for the combat. We play for the adventure. PvP has a part to play in that, but it's not the whole point.

People like us feel that people who focus just on PvP are missing the whole point of Sea of Thieves. I recognize that some people just love the competition. I can be competitive, too. I don't mind friendly competition at all. I welcome it. It's really refreshing to get into a battle with players who have positive attitudes and are just playing the game. That's fantastic.

But it seems like a lot of PvP-oriented people are more than simply competitive. They're out to beat others down. They're basically bullies, plain and simple. They're in it for the ego boost, and they get off on dominating others. It's extremely juvenile behavior, to say the least. People like me don't want to play with people like them. It has nothing to do with Sea of Thieves, in my opinion. They don't appreciate the game for what it is. They don't care about Sea of Thieves; it's just another platform for them to act out their violent inner turmoil. And it's perfect for them, because they can excuse it all by claiming they're "pirates." The sad truth is, they have no clue what being a pirate is all about. Real pirates weren't psychopathic killers. It was all about freedom.

Anyway, I digress. My point is this. People play the game for lots of reasons. Just because Sea of Thieves has a PvP element doesn't mean everyone must want to participate in that aspect of the game. Of course, those of us who aren't really PvP-oriented must learn to exist in a PvP world. It's a fact of life. As we well know, there are skills and techniques one can learn to help players cope with unwanted PvP. Those have been discussed thoroughly elsewhere. But even with a great set of skills, we're still occasionally confronted with unwanted PvP with people who are clearly only out to ruin someone's day. Those of us with more experience cope with the situation and move on. But I have deep empathy for others who have had bad experiences in the game. I know how frustrating and upsetting it can be.

There's no easy solution. But I think at least acknowledging the diversity of our players is a start.

  • absolute 100% best solution is to continue enhancing the PvE features of the game after The Arena so that it is just as entertaining and engaging as PvP.

  • There are 6 ships in the full server - one is yours. Playing with the wife you already have an advantage against the solo players who make a big chunk of the ships. Not all the players look for pvp. I would say that most of them try to avoid it and that's what you can do as well. Keep a weather eye on horizon and if you see a ship moving towards your direction run against the wind with the sail in default position. They will have no chance to catch you that way, because the bigger ships need the wind to be faster than you and the sloops have the same speed.

The game isn't just pvp - in a way it's also the game of tag. You have some treasure? You run. And you don't even have to stop to sell it. Just kick your wife off the boat with some treasure while passing by an outpost to turn it in - after that she can talk to the mermaid in water and get back to your ship. Repeat as many times as you need to sell everything.

  • @shagitall I'm not sure how receptive you will be to what I have to say, but I'll try to give you the benefit of my experience here.

You're very new. Your levels say it all. You're not brand new. Brand new players don't get upset like that, they're not invested enough.

Right now, you are at the worst stage of your SoT development. Think of it as age 13 in human years. Old enough to know some things but too inexperienced to really do much except get mad at how "unfair" everything is for you.

This is a natural point in your SoT journey. Any of the forum old salts here can tell you I was on here making similar posts to yours when I was around your level of experience with the game. Believe me, you grow out of it. You grow into a PVP hunter of ships, maybe not KoS 24/7 but I promise you, if you havent played like that on the way to PL it'll be all you do for a few weeks once you get there.

It's normal to feel like you do now, it's normal to grow out of it too. Just don't become embittered, salty or allow yourself to become toxic and sooner or later it'll click.

When you see sails on the horizon and you have a hold full of loot you'll be thinking "yessss, it's on!" not "oh noes, my loots!"

  • The trick is to spot the ship in the distance and plan what you are gonna do? Fight then get ready? If not u can set sail and move on.

So just keep checking round the island with scope on horizon and wehen on ship it should be you’re number 1 item

Saved me soo many times it’s unreal

  • Yeah, the sea is pretty bloody rigth now.

One additional advice, if you are confronted with a vindicative crew after just a few minutes, they are apparently looking for PvP, so it might be best to switch server rigth after you sunk.

  • This is what I don't get.

I sail every evening, I sail a galleon verry often and I rarely get attacked, like once every 2/3 weeks. I've got almost all of the commendations all of the cosmetics in game right now. I can safely say that I've played enough of this game to at least know what people should be talking about.

Why are you people who complain about PvP getting attacked so much? You guys do realise that the reapers mark is a PvP flag right? Don't wave it around if you don't want PvP.
Also safety in numbers, if it's just you and your girlfriend expand a bit, get 2 friends make some new ones on the sea of thieves, run a galleon all the time. It helps so much because they aren't a prime target. Sloops are.

  • @boxcar-squidy I don't know about that, man.

The whole point of his thread was saying the community doesn't need to be DayZ or the next Rust game. You might have felt that you "needed" to grow out of that mentality, but I haven't. And I am sure a large majority of people feel the same way. We didn't come play this game to play Fortnite or Battlefield 5. If I wanted to go shoot and attack people, there are 7 games I can think of right now, including another naval warfare game, that has better mechanics and flow for doing just that, PvP.

But back on hand, having someone come up and say oh it's fine. Just grin and bear it and soon you will become like everyone else! That is very conforming thing to say to someone in a game that is supposed to be all about adventure and having different interactions. You can't have any different kind of interaction because of exactly what you said, PvP hunter of ships. That is what the community has pretty much been forcing every single player to become and it's at the point now where it is a necessity if you want to play the game at all.

  • @bonesawisreadyx I particularly do not know how to explain this. I must have some problem finding players, or the conspirators conspire to put me in the most empty, because I usually spend a few hours without seeing a ship at all. I usually do streams, and they will not let me lie.

  • @genuine-heather I understand that there is all this psychology, but I do not understand the logic. Overall, I believe that anyone who plays an online game expects to find other players, whether enemies or not. The proposal of the game is precisely to put you in the skin of a pirate, it would not make sense a proposal of this in a world without pirates. I myself do not play the game just by fighting, I play for everything else.

I also like healthy competition, it has happened that I am in an intense battle against other players, in the middle of the battle I receive the message "Stop shooting, the wood is over!". The battle ended, we added as friends and we all went to taste a grog in the tavern.

@genuine-heather disse em What do you want me to do? PVP is too restrictive to enjoy.:

because they can excuse it all by claiming they're "pirates." The sad truth is, they have no clue what being a pirate is all about. Real pirates weren't psychopathic killers. It was all about freedom.

Unfortunately, I see people coming up doing this sort of thing all the time, and many have not read a single book about pirates. Anyone who follows the current lifestyle or who participates in reenactment or revivalism ends up being affected by the horde of SoT players who think they are the pirates of the 21st century. With every release of a new Pirates of the Caribbean, every release of some game, series, movie or something, we got new "pirates" acting stupidly. Unfortunately this time it's because of the streamers.

I fully agree with you, but I still can not understand who buys a game online and does not want to find other players.

  • @darkjedirebel

You want to cooperate, while being someone that attacks and sinks anyone they come across. You are someone who actively hunts to kill. As that is what you do, then state the KoS and aggressive behavior is killing the community. You reap what you sow, how are you going to achieve what you want with that approach? How are you going to cooperate if you aren't willing to talk, negotiate a truce or be friendly yourself.

You claim there is no reason to play other than PvP, because you don't want to do anything else.

I am a pirate legend Athena 10 and I mainly go big game hunting (Skeleton ships, Megalodon, Kraken, Cloud events) and the occasional voyage.

I get into alliances with others, I get into scraps with them as well, based on who I meet.

More people are willing to cooperate than you might believe, but if you start all interactions with the roar of cannons how do you think they will respond?

We craft our own stories and to change the dynamic of the interactions on the seas start with our own approach.

Not everyone will be friendly, but people are not going to just sit there and think let's team up with the guys that just rolled up and are trying to sink my ship.

Change starts with yourself, as that is the only thing you control. The type of pirate you are has nothing to do with the pirates you encounter.

    @shagitall
For new players I suggest to keep an eye out on the horizon, expect a fight and learn to flee. The speaking trumpet can be a great tool for making friends, but always be careful not everyone is truthful.

Try to enjoy everything the seas has to offer, from the epic sea creatures to the endless chase by pirates. Sinking is not the end, it is just a moment to reflect and learn how to become a better pirate. Treasure comes and goes, but it are the stories we have made that none can take away.

There hasn't been any new bilge rat adventures recently, which usually has a bounding effect between crews and the next update is a battleground that people want to practice for. Resulting in a more hostile environment over time. The seas are an ever changing scene of friends and foes. It is the mystery of the seas that calls to us.

  • @targasbr Try to run the noob ship with white sails and the alliance flag up. I have been trying to enjoy the simple life of cargo runner and animal merchant (roleplaying much :3), maybe get some alliance bonus on the side, but that combination seems like better pvp magnet than the reapers mark. Luckily I am polite enough to share my gunpowder kegs with them... tho those broken bottles make me so mad lol!

  • @archaell I think the only way I can get players into the battle is when I remove all the character's and ship's skins. Then some guy comes up thinking I'm a newbie. Easy money.

  • Guys, guys, guys, there’s a simple solution here! Just sell the video game and get a divorce! No mod edit needed for this post! clicks heels

  • Park behind them, fire canons. The moment the start showing life retreat, or simply take a barrel aboard their ship and detonate. Weve found the only way to best a sot troll is by tracking them down dying 20 times if need be just to stop them from earning money

  • well your still new at the game so all I can say is you will beat them once u learn the ropes and keep at it. Perception is 50% of the game

  • You got pirated in a pirate game? The horror.
