Fix the sword combat, worst sword combat in any game I have played
@xxcaptmichaelxx locking the thread? I'm willing to give op another chanse, he can edit his post to have a better wording to allow for a proper discussion on the issue he brought up.
@urihamrayne lock it I dont care lol. The sword combat is trash, 1st problem you are stuck in the animation, 2nd problem is aim punch, 3rd problem is block doesnt even work for pvp, lock it dont hurt my feelings any
@oxonamelessoxo
you are stuck in the animation
This can be a positive or a negative depending on the game. On GunZ animation cancelling created unique fighting styles that I don't think were ever matched in any other action videogame I played, however it was horribly unintended, meaning that the skill ceiling was up the roof, mastering it was a requirement to perform well in the game.
The thing that needs to be acknowledged is what is the point of the sword. It's meant to be a melee reliable damage source, having it be spammable or having it's animations cancel could tip the pvp balance in awkward diractions. I deem the animations delays to be a bit cumbersome, perhaps some tweaking is needed to make them feel a bit better, but as they sstand, they are fine.
aim punch
I don't know what you mean by that.
block doesnt even work for pvp
Demonstrably false. Blocking nullifies all melee damage you recieve. Blocking also allows you to perform sidesteps for quick dodging and blocking also has some interesting tech associated with it.
Overall I think you have a point in regarding the animations, they could be smoother, but by far it's not the worst sword combat.
btw don't tempt me, I feed off of hurt feelings, it's what keeps me going and gives me immense satisfaction when talking to people online.
@oxonamelessoxo A sword combat overhaul has been requested from time to time ever since before the game launched.
I personally would like to see a bit more depth in the sword combat, just simple little things like an ability to parry or riposte.
Ideally I would love for them to have a mount and blade combat style, you used to be able to get into some proper battles in that game. But the chances of that ever happening are slim so I don’t request it aha.
But overall I’m kind of used to it now so it doesn’t really bother me wheather it changes or not.
@urihamrayne also aim punch means, when you're being hit by the sword you get stuck in place and cant move

I will agree with that, it is very frustrating. I believe on the forums it’s been commonly known as stun locked and we have begged for its removal for a very long time.
Believe it or not it used to be a whole lot worse aha they tweaked it.
@oXoNAMELESSoXo
Most pirates underestimate just how deep the combat goes in SoT - the pirate, @KnifeLife, requesting a riposte above is a perfect example, because it's already in the game (see firearm quickdraw in the link below)! Here's my handy combat guide to help keep you from drowning in your own ignorance (no offense!). I hope it helps! 😅
@UrihamRayne
While your response was fine overall, I just wanted to clarify that blocking doesn't block ALL melee damage; it only blocks all melee damage FROM THE FRONT.P.S. -
My personal favorite is the running slash, because 95% of pirates that I encounter (even PLs!) don't even know it exists!! In fact, most think I'm talking about the sword charge, which only proves that they can't tell the difference between a slash and a stab. 🤣P.P.S. -
The guide above will help you destroy all of those players that rely on, and that are about to lose, the double-gun exploit, since they never even bothered to try to learn anything else after that broken meta. 💥I cant believe that literally every single pirate legend doesnt agree with this. The sword fighting is 100% trash. Just because you can deal with it and are used to its trashyness and you cant imagine how it can be better doesnt mean its not trash.
Its like giving birth. You can read a book in between swings and if you miss you may as well take a nap.@reedski I think the guns make the sword look worse than it is.
It can be quite frustrating being killed in an animation lock while the opponent is running around like a headless chicken jumping, eating bananas and shooting you just barely out of the range of your heavy two-handed great sword. The difference in damage doesn't make it any better. It's much more efficient to carry two guns.@knifelife he thinks the sword fighting is bad? wait till he gets boarded by a cpl double gunners, he will pray for "bad sword fighting" lol
@oXoNAMELESSoXo you seem to have made an account just to complain. The forums aren't just a place to complain they are a place for discussion and feedback.
To give feedback you need to elaborate more. Also take postitives and Negatives. Once you get a good feedback thread going changes can be made to improve the things you dislike and keep the things you do like.
For example. I don't like the sword combat because currently the sword seems somewhat underperforming against the dual gun thing. I love fighting with a sword but I can't do anything when someone shoots me with 2 shots before I can even get close. I'd love to see more melee weapons and a dedicated melee/ ranged slot to mitigate this problem I and others have. Any opinions?
See how I mixed positives negatives and start a discussion? That's called feedback. You're welcome and have a nice day. I hope your reputation will one day be higher then your number of posts.

aim punch means when you are firing a gun in an fps shooter being hit throws off your aim.
what you are referring to is a stunlock, but seeing as you don't believe in blocks, that's pretty unsurprising, block is after all the counter to being stunlocked with a sword.
Edit: hit submit mid post, I'll continue.
The sword fighting in this game is clunky, it was designed that way. When a sword fight between two equally skilled fighters occurs it becomes a beautiful dance of lunges, dodges and the occasional running slash. There's a lot of depth to the timing and decisions that you make in a sword fight.
If you just approach it with a "swing sword until dead" mentality, you're going to get your backside handed to you.
I'd love to see some more depth come into melee combat in the form of new weapons/abilities, but I wouldn't want to see drastic changes to the melee combat as it is now because it really is good, in the context of how and where sword fighting occurs in this game.
@galactic-geek I hate to admit it, but I have tried most if not all of the suggested attacks. For whatever reason, I simply find them useless in PvP most of the time. Mostly because I am dead long before I can even attempt any of the moves or learn when is best time to use them. I am sure that usually the double gun thing doesn't help. But I find that I am simply not able to aim as consistent as most of the people I am up against. This is why I strongly believe that SoT should have either a training area, or allow for practice between crew members. Ideally a training area where you can go to find other pirates and simply practice your heart out.
Generally for me, direct hand to hand or close quarters combat ends like one of these scenarios.
- Opponent gets behind me somehow, usually by moving around faster than I can turn and sword attacks until I am dead - once they are behind me and get that first hit in, it is all over, pirate freezes and won't do anything I try, including something simple like jump out of harms way.
- Opponent fires gun, doesn't matter which one, from distance, then fires second gun. This is not always the double gun complained about as there is time between hits, but not enough to eat banana.
- Opponent moves around like ninja that I can't move fast enough to keep up with, seemingly running circles around me.
- Opponent double guns, which will be fixed somehow, but kills you before you can do anything, in many cases you know they are coming, and you start to turn to face them, and you are dead before you can finish said turn, never actually seeing them.
- Opponent uses the slash technique, where they block/slash so that they can reload the slash super quick. It seems like no matter where I go, they can hit me with that first slash, even running behind objects that you would think would help block it, like the brig, mast or wheel doesn't protect you. And your pirate is stunned long enough for them to get second slash in before you can retreat for banana or set your own attack.
There are many more, but all are frustrating as there is no learning from them because they happen way to fast. I am very good with cannons, helming the ship during combat, and being a quarterback for offensive plays during combat. But when it comes to direct PvP I am not very good and there simply seems like there is no way to improve on it as there is no practice.
I also agree that the stun locking needs to go.
@hynieth I believe that every pirate should have a cutlass as a required weapon. Swash buckling pirate and all. I know a lot want two guns no matter what, but I am not one of them.

The only place where stun locking is a true problem for the receiving player is when he's confronted by more then 2 pirates. It's supposed to be hard to win 2v1. The stun locking is needed because if you didn't have it then you'd both be hitting eachother and die around the same time, fights would be a literal slog.
If you find you're getting stun locked a lot try blocking, I also read that you have trouble keeping the opponent centered, you might want to (slowly) up your Right stick's sensitivity bit by bit so you can get used to the higher turning speeds. I'd love to have a sparring mode where I can invite pirates and teach them how to dance with me.
@hynieth I truly think a sparring mode would be most beneficial, because I find combat on the open seas is over way to fast to actually learn anything. So much so that most of the time I don't even try anymore if I am solo. If I have a crew, then I will try, but if I am solo, most often I just stand there and scuttle ship. Yes, I am PLA10 and fought hard to get there, but I did die a lot and the ferryman and I are old friends by now.
@hynieth I misinterpreted stunlock. So I take back what I said about getting rid of it. If im not mistaken, even if you get sliced, you can still bring up block in the middle of getting cut up to block the remaining hits.
@boxcar-squidy you could say that it's the unintended interactions that actually make sword fighting decent. :^)
@nofears-fun The double gun thing notwithstanding, the first thing I do as soon as I get my sword out is block.
Block and hold block until you decide what to do next.
If they close: From blocking - slash (to get that first hit in), block (in case they do a running slash), dodge (Create some space).
Remember this, these will be the 3 actions that you continually repeat throughout combat. Especially remember the space you have created, this is your space, control it, keep the distance between you and only allow them to close this gap when you want them to.
If they stay at a distance: From blocking - you can either power up a lunge (powering up while blocking allows you to retain free movement or aim your lunge) or use the running slash technique to close the distance.
If they stay at a distance and start powering up a lunge: From blocking - wait until they have fully committed and dodge to either side. Follow this up with a 3 slash combo while they are out of stamina following the missed lunge.
The best way to practice is to load up a solo sloop and head for the nearest player ship, get on board and see how long you can last. Even just focus on surviving and blocking damage for the first few attempts, once you get the hang of staying alive when not up against Johnny McTwoGuns and crew that's when you can look at opportunities to start doing damage to people.
I'd love to see a combat practice area though, or a duel emote, or something that allows us to practice our sword techniques against human opponents. At a push you can get a feel for the techniques themselves against skeletons, but the AI threats don't do much to teach you to predict the actions of a sentient challenger.
@galactic-geek I practice against those all the time, they never benefit me when the time comes. And they don't move in ways that seem to defy logic. Like lunging through physical objects to inflict damage.
Yeah it's clunky and the stun lock use to be way way worse. But they some what resolved it. Can it be improved sure anything can. But if you look at it that it is working as the design intended than no it should not be changed. If anything they could possibly build this into the tutorial and make it so that it teaches the basic mechanics. After that your on your own. Just don't make a thread to complain without any justification or evidence to support your claim then throw in a "remove crossplay" comment that has nothing to do with the thread you posted.

Well, sword dodge does allow you to jump through opposing pirates (many pirates seem to know about the manuever, but not this aspect of it, which could make their lives so much easier)... It's particularly useful for getting through an opponent in a doorway or out of a corner when trapped. For example, you're cornered and blocking multiple attacks by a rival pirate: simply sword dodge through them, do a 180° turn upon landing (be sure to let go of your block button mid-hop or you'll slow your recovery time), and slash! Now they're in the corner, and you're attacking them, but with their backside wide open to you. 😈
