The Gold Hoarder Gold Sink

  • This Game needs a Gold Sink.

No, not an actual "Golden Sink"!

I mean a place to dump all our excess gold in large quantities because simply put we're all gathering too much of it and are running out of places to spend it, effectively making it useless.

What's the point of being rich if you have nothing to buy, right?

    So my suggestion is this:

You've all seen the Gold Hoarders with their grubby hands and gold plating all around their skin due to their greed becoming manifest and turning them slowly into the Gold they covet, well why not let the same happen to us?

Allow us to give Gold Hoarder representatives large quantities of our Gold in exchange for unlocking various tiers and intensity of Gold plating throughout our body.

This would in my own self righteous opinion not only give us the Gold sink we need, but make it work perfectly within the narrative of the World and give us all access to a fantastic "Show off" cosmetic for parting with such large portions of our fortune.

Let me know what you all think. :)

  • I just want to keep the gold but not in a number.. i want cosmetic gold like the goldhoarder has piles of gold in his tent.

I want to transfer my money to me treasury so it turns into a small pile of gold and then i need millions more to make the pile so big i can swim in it :")

  • Honestly, this should apply for all 3 trading companies, with the methods of acquiring the cosmetics being specific to each.

After turning in a certain amount of chests, the Gold Hoarders could have a new dialogue option, giving you new quests to do, with the new cosmetic rewards being the gold coloration like they have. These quests could be something like a special riddle that has you dig up a "Cursed Gold Chest". Turn it in, and unlock the cosmetics or something.

Order of Souls could have something similar, where you're sent to acquire a Skeleton Lord skull, which when brought to the souls tent could unlock clothing and cosmetics that have the look and feel of the Order of Souls characters.

With Merchants, you could be sent to pick up a single package for the merchant at the Outpost you're currently at, and returning with it could net you the merchant guild styled clothing.

It would be awesome to see this added honestly. In addition, for Pirate Legends, there could be a new quest that unlocks new Athena and Pirate Legend cosmetics, like an Athena's Shovel/Lantern/Compass/etc..., And Pirate Legend tattoo set, and weapon skins or something.

  • Cosmetics for the captain’s cabin would be nice.

  • What about the chance to fill up chests and hide them in the world, burying your Gold, just like a real pirate? If it were persistent, sharing a map or riddles of your own could then create quests for others. If you could also write notes and bury them in chests, or even put items you've bought into a chest, it would make a really interesting way for community members to create voyages for others to follow. Pirate legends could then be real pirate legends, leaving maps and clues that others could follow to find their treasure.

  • I've always thought about what I'm going to do once I've caught up and collected all of the cosmetics. The upside to Sea of Thieves is that we don't trade with one another so if some players have what seems to be unlimited amounts of gold it doesn't really affect the economy. However, when Rare releases more cosmetics into the game they'll need to be locked behind an achievement of some sort to prevent players with large sums of gold from instantly purchasing every cosmetic piece.

I like the idea about collecting different cosmetic pieces from the various traders. @Cpt-Vunderbar makes an excellent suggestion with introducing rewards through the use of specific voyages for each alliance. I do have a questions in regards to how that would work though.

How much would the voyage cost? Would we be paying absurd amounts of gold to go on this voyage only to run into the chance of sinking and loosing the cursed chest and ultimately our cosmetic rewards? Or would we pay a regular voyage cost and only pay absurd amounts of gold for the cosmetic piece after we've turned in the chest?

  • It's not a bad idea! I imagine the good folks at Rare must have something in mind, and this wouldn't trigger a focus on "grinding." (Wow, I hate that term!)

They already suggest this a little with the upgrades to tools, but if there were a series of upgrades that specifically changed your overall look, like the gold hoarder's plating, it would also mark out a player's preference for a given aesthetic and maybe even style of play.

Oooh: If you buy into the Order of Souls, maybe your eyes could glow and all! Merchant Alliance ... maybe new gestures?

  • I do have 5 million gold...

  • +1
We really need some fancy new way of spending our gold! =)

  • @sshteeve

Oh please rare :D this could be so nice but maybe it would completely change the game making us so greedy and well might just turn me into a real pirate ^^ neeeeeed more more more :")

I'd say the voyages for the cosmetic rewards should cost around 250-300 gold per voyage. You'd still treat it as a standard voyage, but they'd only have a single objective on them.

GH - Riddle or Treasure Map

    • Dig up the cursed chest of gold and return it to any Gold Hoarder on an outpost.

OOS - PvE Boss Skeleton Fight

    • Defeat a Skeleton Lord and obtain his skull to sell to any Order of Souls character on an outpost.

MG - A Special Cargo Run or Rare Animal Delivery

    • Sail to the specific island and pick up a single cargo run item or a uniquely colored animal from the NPC and return it to any Merchant Guild member at an outpost.

The reward for each one would be a big payout for your troubles (around 4-5k gold, but no rep, as this should only be available to Pirate Legends, with the cosmetics being locked until level 50), and the trading companies will now have additional things to buy in the form of new clothes, tatoos, accessories, etc... That make you look and feel like a part of that trading company.

Cost of each item could be around 20,000 gold, as I don't think they should be super inexpensive, but also should be costly as a set. So around 100k gold per set, roughly.

  • @cpt-vunderbar Interesting concept. I'm not so sure we should be fighting Skeleton Lords just yet though. I think when they get introduced into the game they should be tied to a bit more story than just a voyage for additional cosmetics.

As for the actual cosmetics, would we have to get to level 50 GH and then return 5 of these chests to unlock the eye patch, 10 to unlock the leg, 25 to unlock the jaw, etc? Or are you suggesting everything would be unlocked at level 50 and these "legendary GH voyages" just offer up 4-5k every time we turn in?

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie

You're probably right about the Skeleton Lords. I just thought a more powerful version of a captain would make sense for those voyages.

As for the cosmetics, I think they should require you to be at level 50 in each trading company (gotta show your commitment to their respective causes, right ?), And the entire set would show up for players who hit level 50, but you'd have to complete a Legendary Voyage for each trading company for the sets to actually be unlocked and purchasable. Each piece costing around 12k to 20k gold, this way they have value, everyone is able to get them, and they require some effort to get.

Completing your first Legendary Voyage for each trading company is what unlocks the cosmetics. It's a way of "proving yourself" by taking on a more difficult version of the standard voyages, and your reward is some new threads to show how committed you are to the different trading companies.

  • @cpt-vunderbar Okay, I'm going to play a bit of devils advocate here. Keep in mind I like where your idea is going but I'm going to throw a few of things at you and see what you think might stick.

What could we do to make the voyages feel different? Maybe not significantly different but different enough so that there's at least a small sense of fresh air?

Since the main topic of this thread is all about creating a gold sink wouldn't it make more sense to charge a HUGE price for these extra pieces? I'm talking Athena ship customization expensive. Something like this that makes our characters really stand out on their own should be expensive. Plus it also gives really rich pirates something to spend their money on.

Do you think it would be better to require players to redo this "legendary company voyage" multiple times in order to obtain all of the gear?

  • That would be a pretty cool cosmetic as long as it’s not taking up a clothing slot and it goes on the actual skin under the clothing

  • @captain-izaya Like the idea where the more gold you have the more pretty your boat is, so lets say at 100k you get a few chests and gold piles on your boat, at 500k parts of your boat are golden and the piles are bigger, at a million it gets more extra....
