When sot was still in testing, and we only had 2 days to play, I would always jump in a random galley, had fun...friend the crew "see ya after release". Now, I've been with the same crew almost the entire time since release and were a dream team. But sometimes I wanna play, no one is on so I have to sloop it....and we all know how sloops have to watch out. So lately I try random galleys.... o man, what an experience... it's either 4 yr olds or dudes that have to afk to light their bowl. And I'm steering, and doing all 3 sails ...and digging up treasure and fighting. And combat is out of the question....they see a boat and scream to go after it...we get there and get our butts kicked cuz everyone wants to shoot a cannon. "Planks? Buckets? What dat?"
Do I just have bad luck or is this the sot community now. Why can't I get some of the people that are involved with the forums or play to win...or both.
Is it that hard to find a new crew?
@johnny-vain don't waste your time with open crews. If you want to laugh and get some entertainment, that's what open crews are for. Use the sea of thieves community discord channel. Tons of people there always looking to crew up. I've met quite a few great players there.
@johnny-vain Try looking at one of the many fleets that are active in the community. They have large groups of players that are always active and do great community events.

A lot of the time, yes, open crews are laughable, but not always. Open galleys are usually trash, but occasionally you'll find some good players in open sloops or brigantines. I've made several friends from open crews so don't write it off entirely. Not everyone follows the forums or knows about the discord. I also don't mind showing new players the ropes once in a while if they seem competent and communicate. As long as a noob is compliant and understands who is in charge on the ship, I dont mind.
You'll probably find that there are a bunch of new players in open crews right now because of the holiday sales on Game Pass and the game itself. It also seems to become quite popular for streamers so you're seeing some interest coming in from there.
It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a bunch of new players, but if you're not the kind of person who likes to teach them the ropes, it could be frustrating.
The last of the players who nabbed Game Pass for a month with no intention to renew it should expire around the 7th of February, so you might see a drop off of interest then... at least until Arena drops.
So, yeah, your best option at the moment for experienced crews is Discord.
The open crew system is flawed at best. I dabble in it and notice that the brig and sloop open crews tend to be more enjoyable than the galleons.
If you want to open crew inspect the crew:
- Can they communicate, even through chat wheel. Being able to say Aye or No! is the minimum requirement for me.
- Do they gather supplies: it is a key aspect of people understanding the basics and usually how useful they will be
- Is there a voyage running before you set off or a common goal? A crew needs a direction especially in open groups.
There a couple of other aspects I consider and watch out for myself, but these are the most important factors.
If the group doesn't meet the quota, it is time to hop.
Edit: I enjoy teaching new pirates the game, but the galleon open crew usually isn't interested in learning. The best teaching sessions are usually in a sloop.

This!
I have the same experience with open crews.. We have to get some filter options for language, communication, age.. Maybe skill-level.. From time to time i enjoy learning fellow pirates how to pirate.. But sometimes i just want to play with a skilled-crew..@enticed-malice o right the discord thing. Where do I find that channel? I usually hit record and edit it for YouTube just for the people i play with so they can re visit the adventure. But the random crew thing. Man it's so bad...i should make a montage of all the stoners and children i get lumped in with haha. !

Random sailing is a crapshoot and very frustrating. Hearding cats. First thing I do when I join is look if there's a voyage down and see if they have more than stock resources. 90% of the time the ship is sailing to nowhere with nothing on it. It's ridiculous.

Here is the link to the official discord for sot
@ktingaling my main crew is basically me and one other always and then other 2 are a list of people we sail with but we have had new guys and girls and we tell them...listen to us and you'll do fine. And by the end, they are cut throat murderous plundering blow holes like us haha. Omg , are we creating toxic players! Nah.
I'd say try a Brig, it's a lot better regarding the level of player you'll encounter. Often it's 2 friends who need a 3rd person to fill up the slot and it's generally easier if someone isnt pulling his/ her weight.
Galleon is entirely doable and fun with strangers as long als you don't set the bar too high. Crashing into islands? no problem just drop anchor plank up and laugh about it. Get sunk because everyone fires cannons and no-one repairs (why weren't you tho?) no problem just laugh and respawn.
I sometimes just roll a sloop, go full sailor and hop on a galleon or brig for fun. Sometimes I meet really nice people who will teach me everything and take me in like an adopted sailor child, and in the end I play them a tune in the tavern followed by screams of awe about the legendary hideout opening up ^_^
