I really really hope that Rare doesn’t add Vikings.

  • A lot of people I’be seen lately think it would be great to add Vikings in Sea if Thieves, however I would like to politely ask Rare to please not do that. The age of Vikings ended in 1066, while the age of piracy began around 1650. That’s six hundred years in gap, as well as the fact that Vikings never made it into the Carribean. And perhaps even more importantly, it just wouldn’t fit the game’s aesthetic. Vikings and pirates, while both marauders on the seas, we’re very different in design and including one in the other’s game wouldn’t fit.

  • I can see both sides to this... since it's fantasy, but you also want to keep some "realism" to it.

The only thing we know for sure is the entrance to the Sea of Thieves is through a portal in the Caribbean. After that, all bets are off! We could find some frozen tundra in the northern areas of the sea, for example :)

Remember too we're really close to the Bermuda triangle... strange things could happen, and honestly dealing with an entirely new type of enemy and aesthetic and fighting style and loot and lore might be pretty cool.

Rare has to walk a fine line though, part of the beauty of the game is its utter simplicity. Adding too many major offshoots like this could affect that appeal to simplicity.

Either way, I'm excited to see what 2019 holds... (hopefully it holds fishing.)

  • @Swaggyspaceman

How about a faction called "The Black Banner Horde"?

    Picture this...

Combining elements of Vikings, Mongolians and Barbary Pirates into a brutal and deadly little package. They ride the open seas on foul winds from the world's end and ravage all before them. Their galleys have the added advantage of oars, powered by slaves captured from their recent raids, which allow them to defy the winds should they prove unfavorable.

They strike hard and fast, preferring to ram their enemies on the open seas or swarm them on the land.

You'll need a steady hand, an eagle eye and a bit of luck to fend off these blackguards. Of course, a loaded blunderbuss never hurt either.

  • @swaggyspaceman They can't, afaik. Vikings had no canons and rows. Would be hard to add this type of ships, even impossible to balance it. There is no artwork for that in the artbook, too. I doubt they do that. They'ld add something like the Hanse, Asians. Cog and Junk would fit - the artbook shows some nordic and asian inspired schemes.

  • I don't get it. Are you talking Viking based NPCs or Viking cosmetics? If it's the latter I truly don't see the issue you could have with someone dressing as a Vikings, not like this game about realism.

  • The title to this thread made me laugh. I’ve never heard anyone seriously say they want Vikings in Sea of Thieves. Even if they did, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. It’s never, ever gonna happen. 😄
