Players are confusing Reapers Mark flag with alliance flag.

  • Clearly there needs to be a sign or something explaining alliances because a lot of players still do not get it. Even players that know how to form alliances still do really stupid things like watch you go to an outpost and then leave the alliance and continue on their journey before you turn in. This stuff happens every single day. People do not get it. They dont understand that there is a net gain when you have allies.

The way the devs discussed the reapers mark flag made everyone think it could be used as a way of finding alliances. Really? Come on thats ridiculous Ive never seen it happen.
Ive suggested in the past we need an Allies Mark flag that works in the same way only it isnt called REAPERS MARK with a big red skull of death.
The reapers mark is useless unless youre just looking to bash heads. Being able to call out to allies when youre fighting a kraken or being attacked by nasty pirates could be a useful tool.

  • Maybe they dont want to be in an alliance anymore. So they drop. May be diffrent reasonings for why to drop out. Maybe they on the way to an outpost them selves to sell and dont want to share loot with u so they leave. Maybe they dont check on map to see if ally ship is close to outpost to sell and instead they just leave because dinner got served. We might never know.

And the reaper can be used for alliances. That its introduced as to show u want PvP doesnt mean to u have to use it like that. It shows u on the map. This might invite players to come near u. Than u have an option to either go fight PvP or try make alliance.

The reaper shows your position its up 2 you how to handle after u meet eachother.

To me there not need to be a seperate extra flag for alliance. Thats just me

  • When I am casually sailing with the wife, we avoid players with the Reapers Mark. If you add an "Allies Mark" to attract people for an alliance, we will avoid that too as it will mostly be used by those who already fly the Reapers Mark to lure in those who avoid them.

  • @Mith-Bosevem I believe you are wrong, and there's no need for a redundant flag, especially when flags are specifically designed to be vague, multipurpose, and open to interpretation.

All the Reaper's Mark does is let others know where you are. It bears the game's logo because it's all about bringing you and the rest of the SoT community together, for better or for worse. I myself have used it to start numerous alliances, and yes, as always, it's a calculated risk when I do, but that's all just part of the adventure.

  • @mith-bosevem

There's a few ways around this without having an extra flag, one being to talk to your allies when you join?

Normally we'll hail someone and have a conversation around what we're doing on the seas before agreeing to create an alliance or inviting someone, and as mentioned above there are all sorts of reasons where a crew might leave an alliance both fairly mundane and tactical.

Seeing the Reaper's mark always engenders a small frisson of excitement - there they are, are they coming for you, what are their intentions, should we go after them?

The looseness of the system often leaves options open for a whole range of responses and unpredictability and I love that.

  • I do not see the flags as they currently are being a problem. I do think there could be more in game help and explanation for certain mechanics. While things are very intuitive by simply interacting with everything around you, new players do get confused and do not understand certain concepts of our toys in the sandbox.

The biggest issue is lack of interest and other players in general. Months ago I found alliances were common. There were many pirates seeking them out for both good and mischievous purposes. As the months have passed that has drastically faded. I find many players just want to do their own thing. They do not care or want interaction with others of any kind.

The sea is also not as full. Even around events there are not the numbers it used to be and the tide recedes quickly. I still merge over and over and lucky to find one or two player ships in long hours sailing. Why it is nice to see the skellie ships out there even though their movements our quite odd most of the time.

Still only seen fog once, only two Megs, and no sign of Karen since the changes. I read some posts that they spawn too often. Just like some posts say they never merge. Seems all servers are not the same. Sometimes it sounds like we are playing totally different games.

As we end the year the game itself is fuller game content wise, except for Pirate Legends. However, outside the few times and moments one might end up on a server when the sun, moon, and stars align, it is far from what it used to be and it can more often feel very empty in many ways.

Hopefully as we sail into a new year things will change. Would like to see the plan besides and beyond The Arena soon. I still think The Arena will may end up doing more harm than good for the game in general. Yes, it will provided a pocket of activity, however the rest of the sea may end up more with even less.

  • @x-crowheart-x What times are you normally sailing? I'm genuinely curious as this isn't my experience at all so was wondering if perhaps it's linked to time of day or timezone?

  • @katttruewalker

Eastern U.S. My spouse and I like to play games together, which is the biggest reason we like and play Sea of Thieves. We can play on any day and time. We sail a lot on evenings weekdays and any time on weekends.

  • @x-Crowheart-x

I play in GMT+1 time zone. During weeks from 19:00 ish till 23:00 ish. In weekends i tend to sail if i have time from wake up till sunday night. Yes we do long voyages.

My crew consits of Euro's and American's from time 2 time an Aussie gets in.

If i understand correctly we play diffrent games. I see fog almost everyday. Megs spawn too insane. EVERY skelly ship atm that spawns on me will spawn a meg aswell. IF a karen spawns the meg is about to spawn. Its really busy atm when we sail.
Somehow the game also knows when i want to eat my dinner... thats when stuff really gets hectic. But all good fun!

What im trying to say with this. During the times i play its never a dull moment. It kinda doesnt matter wether me (euro) or crew (american) start. We always run into stuff and sometimes more often than we like to. (many distractions out on sea).

Ditto to this but Central U.S.

  • @archangel-timmy

Yeah common times with a work schedule. We played during vacation time as well.

Are you having experiences like @WeakDexx or similar to what I mentioned?

  • @weakdexx

Totally different! Know a lot of others seeing the opposite of your experience as well. You are playing six hours ahead of Eastern time. How are the servers setup by loacation and zone?

It varies from day-to-day or server-to-server really. I didn't see fog my first 3 days of playing, now I will sometimes see it in a variety of spans. Same for the Meg/Skelleons/Kraken, sometimes few and far between and sometimes back to back. Recently fended off the Kraken to have a Skelleon spawn as we were grabbing loot, followed by a Meg within minutes of engaging the skeletons.

There are times were we land a server where everyone is relaxed and doing there own thing, or we don't see anyone for a couple of hours. Last night when we logged in, we got chased from one Reapers Mark to another as there were 3 on the server floating around.

  • Every. Single. Day. The loading screen needs a permanent help message explaining alliances please!
