Ship to Ship combat lacking

  • I want to love your game so bad, but I just can't. Everything in the game is awesome, except for one thing. The ship to ship combat. There is no such thing as ship to ship combat. There is only one tactic that happens over and over. They swim over or shoot themselves over with the cannon (somehow while we're going full speed, every time), board our ship, drop the anchor (they will sacrifice themselves to drop the anchor), and then swim over with TNT under the ship or board the ship while we are bringing the anchor up. So while I'm trying to play a pirate game, they are playing a COD game. Where is the real ship combat? Two ships duking it out. Firing and trying to repair to survive? From the people I've talked to, you are hemorrhaging new players after a week of playing because of those that use the above "tactic." I had two guys board our ship at full speed? One went for the anchor and then a two seconds later another somehow gets on board and blows everyone up. This isn't fun. This isn't a pirate game. Who wants to work for an hour and then lose everything to that kind of tactic in a game where pirates are the theme and pirates of the past couldn't do that. Fight the way pirates fought because someone dropping your anchor and blowing you up over and over isn't fun. This is why I will no longer be playing your game. And I did the xbox game pass just to try your game out and I'll be cancelling that. So no money will be made off of me. For those Trolls that defend that tactic I say, you have no skills. Goodbye and goodnight.

  • There's a lot of salt in the oceans, lads. I think I found where it all came from.

Your post could have been summed up with "I don't know how to guard my ladders/ kill someone before they hit my anchor, and it upsets me."

Have fun with Hello Kitty Island Adventure shrug

  • Yeh this tactic is a skill for one, have you tried doing it yourself? It takes alot of practice, secondly you end up with the epic ship battles when you and your crew are competent enough to watch your ladders (listen for the sound cue of a water splash) once they can't get onboard the tactics HAVE to change to a ship battle instead since there's no way to get onboard, even during the ship battle the whole time you need to be watching and listening out for your ladders, learn from your mistakes instead of getting upset and you'll get that ship combat your looking for

One keg on board is actually no big deal. If you play smart, your crew will first prevent boarding by guarding ladders as stated above.

Also even if you fail to keep them off the deck; no problem. Avoid getting exploded your self, then get some one one damage control while the rest of you deal with the second / third attempt to board while one runs a bucket if needed.

Take the time to use your cursed cannon balls, they are exceptionally potent when used correctly. None of them are a magic "i win" bullet, but they can tip the balance very nicely when played correctly.

The easiest ships to avoid and deal with are Galleon / Sloop; and sailing a brig makes life super easy.. The only challenging component about the brig is dealing with the occasional and very rare instance when the Kracken blocks your entire crew below deck because you played badly.

Outside of that Sea of Thieves actually has quite a lot of nuance to the PVP combat even if it appears very simple and 1 dimensional on the surface. You're only issue is that you have not adapted your play style to the game yet.

Best of luck on the high seas, and send em to Davey for me.

  • Boarding as the only tactic? Bah! Who needs to board when you have anchorballs!?

Hit them high, then hit them with a ballastball, and watch them sink!

Or hit them low, then hit them with a grog-, weary-, or jigball as they feebly attempt to repair their sinking ship!

Or hit them with a rigging- or helmball when they're near rocks or an island, and watch them crash!

Already hurt them? Then hit them with a venomball to finish them off!

I'm sorry @JokerSF77 , but your ignorance and unnecessary frustration is staggering.

  • I agree that there are way too many lame tactics users, ending with killing the most of enemies while getting killed in the process. I don't understand why devs did not implement a counter suicidal fools system already, in order to raise the time passed on the ship of the damned everytime you've been chain killed or "suicide" yourself in a row.

Could be even nice to finally have this quest they were teasing before release, to get out of the ship of the damned once you've died too often in a row .

Would help preventing lame suicidal tactics to be over used in chain.

And this is where so many people make a mistake...SOT may look easy , but it's pretty hard to win....wich make it all the more fun when you win...If those people can so easely shoot themselves onto your ship then it means you must have been hitting the same course all the time , turn , come closer, go wider , try to keep them behind you, have somebody guard the ladders , listen to the water , a swimmer makes a splashing sound...Really in this game you use all yer senses to survive or win , but if you don't use them than the other crew is bound to win...There is also no need to sail around with a hoard from hours, cash in often to make sure your losses, If you lose , are little...

Unfortunately i cannot see with wich type of ship you sailed or we could throw in some really good tips and tricks towards you...
But i can only say this...Over the years , developers have been making games in wich they are certain that the gamer can win , because nobody likes to lose...During many years , we experience a loss as a frustrating , waste of time and sometimes we quit and leave that game since our " invinbility" feel has hurt...
Now , mostly nobody likes to lose , but i'm playing since first Alpha, lost numerous ships and battles but everytime i learn something about the game and myself...This is a game about getting down but also get back up again...Rare has added so much content in the last few months that i really have compassion with the new player...Stop...Hold it right there , that was NO sarcasm or any other hurting humor , i really do feel that the game has become so rich that any new player or returning player has no clue what to do first...
i feel that Sea of Thieves may not slide off towards games like ARK or Conan in wich i never could emmerse because i simply didn't knew what i had to do nor what was happening to my character since i didn't understand all the symbols i was reaping while running around...

But people on this Forum are very helpfull, and if you should have altered your post a bit you would have seen how many would stretch out their hand to you in order to help you...

But it's never too late ...Start anew , learn to not be an easy target by sailing straight , try to outturn an enemy and fire a few shots , find cursed cannonballs and fire them at the right moment , you will feel when and don't be afraid to ask for help , even in the game , there are a lot of Goodhearted Pirates that offer assistance if you talk to them...

You may think SOT is childish easy but forget it , this is a difficult to master game but oh soooo rewarding in gameplay, feels , comraderie , sillyness and stories you can have or make out here. Learn from your mistakes , don't get frustrated and cash in often , don't hang to much value to a loss , if you have lost you can't turn back time, get over it and be honest to yourself or the crew where you had an " opening" in yer defence...Winning is not guaranteed anymore , you have to fight for a victorie in SOT , but that's a beauty too because you will be at the tip of yer seat , will bite unknowingly yer tongue in order to sail a nimbler vessel in the stern of the " enemy" and then unleash hell upon them...

If you give it a new try , steal some tips and tricks from others, ask for advice on Forum or real game then you will see that Old George was right in trying to keep you aboard and then i haven't written one word about the " Magic" that can entangle your Heart once this game is growing upon you...But That is something i can't for you , it's different for everybody and you , you alone are able to find it or refuse it ...The ball has rolled into your camp ...Are you going to put it in a box? Or are you taking up the challenge and come out and play? It's all up to you , Sir.

  • @jokersf77 you said "For those Trolls that defend that tactic I say, you have no skills."

sounds like you don't have the skill to prevent boarders...

  • @clumsy-george I appreciate the constructive reply. We had been getting owned by the same tactic over the past couple of nights. We had watched videos to learn and started to use some of the tactics you mentioned above. The last battle is when I threw in the towel as we had been doing everything we had learned and everyone is on point. The problem with someone boarding is that they get to the top of the ladder, you get off two swings and they are already running to your anchor. By the time you get to them and swing again they have already dropped your anchor. Now in order to get your anchor up quickly (on a Galleon) three of us we running to it. Before we even go to the anchor one of them with gunpowder boarded and blew three of us up and blew the other one off the boat. By the time all of us re-spawned the boat was gone. How in the hell did a guy swimming with gunpowder reach us so quickly in a dynamic fight where we were turning and moving at full speed with two crew on the sails at all times before the board? My main beef is that we should be able to pull the ladders up and enemies shouldn't be able to drop your anchor so quickly. At least giving the crew time to fight them off, forcing them to engage in combat before dropping the anchor. Then if the beat the crew, heck they deserve to drop the anchor. I still have no conceivable idea how the guy with gunpowder got on our boat as we had been moving at full speed and he would have had to have been seconds away from boarding when he dropped our anchor.

  • I agree dropping the anchor is too easy, devs should add a lock on the anchor to be unlocked just to access the anchor. Then enemy players should have first to unlock the anchor and then be able to drop it. Of course enemy unlocking the anchor would be knock back if shot.

Such a mechanic would prevent anchors to be dropped so freaking easily and rapidly, openning the game for more fighting on decks for control of the anchor.
