A bigger world

  • I know this will be a while but not impossible, but it'll be better if/when Rare expands the sea big enough they should be able to fit more people in the sea matter infact hopefully everyone. I am sure I will get replies saying it'll be chaos but I don't think so if the sea is extremely larger than it is now, just randomize spawn areas

  • Well there are some pros and cons with that. It would be nice to expand and able to include more in the server. However, lag happens when a group of ships are together. It will take a while to get from one part of the world to the next. (Just an add on), some people are losing interest into the game because of some things that have happened within the game. But RARE may expand and add something to the world, but not too large to where it will make journeying from one place to another a hassle and dull.

  • @admiralelectric The limit on the amount of ships on thr server and by extention player limit is not tied to the size of the Map, but tied to the technical limits of aviable harware resources generally Memory as well as bandwith. While the size of the Map does play a role in determining the optimal numbers of players on a map its a 2 fold problem for when you make a map Bigger the amount players you need there to be to provide action though by increasing the Size of the Map you decrease the amount of aviable resources you can have for player data meaning the less amount of players you could actually support in a session.

  • I don't have hard facts for this but I feel I'm pretty close to the truth here.

At launch we saw a good ammount of ships per server, and with the last few patches (especially cursed sails and forsaken shores) we've seen less ships and more reports of server mergers.
Since you only need 6 crews to fill a server AND with server mergers you'd think you'd see more people but you don't the reason for this? I think it's as follows:

At launch Rare was able to put 6 galleons worth of players on a server without issue so crews of any size would always fill a server up to 6 ships, whenever one dropped the server would just find more etc.

However as patches came and content started expanding the number of encounters, islands and things that roam the seas the servers were getting taxed more and the developers had to dial back the ammount of players. Thus we now have a max of around 16 players so that's 6 solo sloops 5 Brigs or 4 Galleons or maybe even less.

Expanding / upgrading the servers is always an option but an expensive one, so we'll see what Rare/ Microsoft does here.
But I feel for now it's mostly a technical limitation that's causing the number of ships to be smaller and expantions of the map will only reduce that further.

  • Personally, I'd hate to see the sea become one big traffic jam...
I don't want to see other players every couple of minutes.

  • A larger map with more ships may even lead to fewer encounters in the average.
