XBox Bug: L Stick up just engages

  • For no apparent reason.

Standing perfectly still on the ship's deck or on dry land, the flippin' character will just start slowly walking forward.

When viewing the map to mark islands, the map starts scrolling up on it's own.

When holding a sail line, the sail starts to raise itself.

All of the above with ZERO controller input.

No, not the controller; it's an XBox elite that works splendidly with all other games.

Just a heads-up. Already put in a ticket.

itsthe xbox controller driver or....what ever its called happens on everything not just sea of thives just flick the stick up and it stops doing it

  • I know you are certain it is not the controller, but I would bet if you switch to another controller it will not do that. Elite or not, things stop working properly over time. I’ve had the behavior you are describing in other games when my controller is not returning to zero correctly anymore. Other games might be handling it differently. Either way, good luck working through it. I hope you find and fix the issue soon.

  • The controller I use unfortunately has more than one joystick problem. The left stick has problems with both left and right. I'll constantly step sideways and fall off the ship going left, and right doesn't like to work. I have to angle it a little forward or back when I move right.
As far as my right stick goes. It will move forward at rest sometimes making my guy look up. Other times it will turn left but not as often.
It's my original controller so it's pretty old and has more problems than my other one, but I can't hook my headset into my other controller.

Some games have controller options to set dead zones with your sticks making slight movements do nothing until they are angled past a certain percent. It's possible sea of thieves is very sensitive to slight stick movements and it picks up on the wear and tear some sticks have gone through. Or it may just strictly be the hardware.

It's the controller's sensitivity, you've got it too high and that's reduced the dead zone of your control stick. Have you been into the options and fiddled with the sensitivity?

This. You have the deadzone to almost zero..or no deadzone which means the character will move on his own.

In the Xbox Controller app, check ur sensitivity or the stick behavior. If its agressive, the drift can occur.

i had this exact issue (well was right stick kept turning left) until yesterday when i got a new controller.
it didnt always happen but was constant when it started.
could you borrow a friends controller just to check that it definitely is not the problem?

Sadly, turns out it WAS the controller.

Thanks for all the reads and suggestions!

  • Yeah, Santa looks an awful lot like me, and delivers within the hour.

    Happy New Year.

  • @drayman86 This could actually be an issue with the Joystick on your controller.

I only say this because I have an Elite and had the exact same issue but I thought it was just a bug on Overwatch.

I would suggest trying another controller or quickly sending it back while it’s under a manufactures warranty. Those controllers are way to expensive to be taking chances.

You can also get them replaced for free under your Xbox warranty if the controller has ran out of its own one.

  • @knifelife , thanks, nope, the controller is out of warranty, and it's an Elite.

Sadly, this is the second Elite failure I've experienced. The first was the R trigger limiter broke, render the trigger useless.

I have two that could make one Elite. I"ve found online repair and replace instructions. Just need the right tools and know how to do elementary soldering.

  • @drayman86 You can get it replaced through your Xbox’s warranty mate. I don’t know the details but my friend has replaced his like 3 times under his consoles one because they count as an accessory.

Something to look into either way :)

  • @drayman86 I got the three year warranty from Walmart. well worth it.

  • This is a common issue for all Xbox controllers. There is also a fix.. Use a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol and clean the ball area very well a few times. This completely fixes my drift. For what I understand bits of rubber and debris adheres to the ball and messes up the micro switches' input. The rubbing alcohol fixed mine months ago and is still going strong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqHJFEnbZLQ&t=141s
