server migration isues

  • I feel as though server migration needs work on noticing when its a good time to migrate.

I was in a 1 on 1 pvp battle with another player. There was a lot of loot up for grabs, I had just done a lucrative treasure hunt on the island and he had a lot on his ship. We were both sailing around Crooks hollow having a ship battle. I sunk his ship, due to the storm I didn't manage to save mine. We had a pistol battle and he killed me. When I re-spawned I was going to try and race back to the island before he could get to his ship and back to get the loot, but migrated as I was climbing back on to my ship. Very annoying as we could no longer continue the battle and I lost a good hours game play.

Not sure what to suggest for a fix, but as we had both lost our ships the loot was definitely still up for grabs. I get if you die its a good time to migrate server as you usually have been beaten by another player whose ship is still intact but he was still vulnerable and would've been interesting to see how that battle played out.

  • Server migration is evil. I've never had a good experience with being merged, but I've had many, many bad ones. One night I was merged ten or more times within a six hour window. In fairness to Rare, they have made some improvements. But it's still disruptive and annoying, and often game-breaking. Server migration should be optional. At the very least, it should be possible to opt out for a given time frame, like an hour or so, so one could make certain they'd have time to complete whatever activity they were engaged in.

I couldn't agree more. I literally have just had a similar experience, except worse!
I have just chased down another sloop which was loaded with goodies after multiple engagements, I sunk him. I dropped anchor and jumped in the water to start grabbing loot and as I jump on the ladder of my ship... Server Migration.
Not only was all the loot in the water gone I had a skull in my hand on the ladder and I couldn't get off the ladder. Full glitched on it. So I had to leave the server. If I had of known this would happen I would have let the guy keep his loot. Now no one gets anything.

Rare, if your listening... This is 4 months on from this post and its still happening! Add a notification /warning 15 minutes prior to a server migration, let the guys get their loot on their ships. Its not hard fix. I know old MMO's that are able to give warnings that server is going down/migrating. Its 2019 sort it out!

P.S. I enjoy the game a lot. This stuff is just frustrating as you grind away and then loose everything for the dumbest reason.

  • I can't help you with the server-merging post-ship respawns, but any other time is easily avoidable simply by not dropping your anchor.

My experience has taught me that certain criteria can be met to drastically reduce your chances of a server merger to practically nil; they are:

    1. be on a populated server,
    2. be in an alliance,
    3. keep at least 1 crew member off of your ship when anchored, and
    4. keep your anchor raised as much as possible.

The mergers seem to rely on the positioning of players and the movement of the ship, hence the conditions - it's likely to ensure the smooth transition from 1 server to the next.

Server mergers only occur when you have your anchor dropped and ALL of your crew is on your ship. To avoid being merged while you are doing something like grabbing loot, you should simply keep your anchor up. In fact, you should always keep your anchor up (with sails raised of course). Anyways, as much as server mergers suck sometimes, I think without them the game would be in a bad place. Imagine if they didn’t move people who were alone in a session, there would be tons of servers with something like a single sloop or a galleon on it. Not only would this be a huge waste of RARE’s resources, it would also give those people a leg up on the people who don’t have a session to themselves.

This is true - with server-merging, it allows players to never truly be alone, which is kind of the point. Even if our advice is followed, that's not going to stop players from eventually merging into your own server.

  • last night/this morning brought a couple server merges and in both, our rowboat didnt come with us. The first time we weren't sure if we had left it behind or a battle with a kracken directly into a meg directly into a skele ship had maybe destroyed it...

but later on it happened again this time after I loaded nearly an entire amount of Athena's loot along with some random stuff we found along the way (including kracken and skele ship loot, the meg ran off) and it didn't merge with us.

I'm still a bit angry. this shouldn't happen at all. -_-
