Here's why Server Changes are game breaking to Sea Of Thieves.

  • The following issue will be testified by other players and mates who have encountered the same frustrating issue. I want this to be directed towards the developers for rectifying.

Please read the following break down of how the event happened in order to understand the problem and FIX it.

    • We arrived at Plunder Outpost with about 3 hours of loot to cash in, just as we start a Galleon comes straight us, carrying on board loot from a Skull Fort.
    • We fight it out, firing at each-other to smithereens, travelling to each other's boat to kill each other and prevent repairs, in sum, a fun Sea Of Thieves battling experience.
    • As I'm killing the enemies crew in the depths of their flooding ship, they detonated a MEGA keg, which sank both our and their boats.
    • You can imagine the amount of loot floating in the water.
    • As we respawn and so does our ship, we have to head towards the outpost to see what we can salvage or if we can intercept the other crew.
    • As we set sail the server change message appears: "The world is changing, new dangers there be, Between boundless sky and treacherous sea, On rolling waves with sails unfurled, Ships come to plunder this new world"
    • This resulted in the other crew and all the loot to vanish.

I want explanations, why does the server change like that when there are clearly other players sailing the sea's and forts being cleared. It broke the environment we played in for 3 hours.

I'm not angry about losing the loot and battle, I'm very upset that because of a game mechanic there was no chance for us to do anything.

    Please address properly.
    Cheers.

  • @iseeurpeeinhd Wow... What a coincidence. Yesterday my friends and I were sailing, doing adventures and all... then the same thing happened to us. We lost our stuff after sinking then the same message appeared. we were close, so we came back and everything was gone. I hope they fix this problem.

And before anyone asks, we know loot will sink, but we can testify that we were close enough that the loot would not sink upon returning.

  • @iseeurpeeinhd yo!!!!! yeahh same here loose all chest and saphire.

  • @plumcleric Due to a server change right? Yeah, RARE's number one priority should be to preserve and protect their player's data.

  • @iseeurpeeinhd yes...i was in his Crew. I'm a witness to this. Sea of thieves is an amazing game and i just wish stuff like that don't happen. We probably lost 5 rep for every merchant.
    :(

The other crew left the server and you were left on an empty server so the game did what it does whenever this happens. There is nothing odd about this happening. How do you know there were other crews on the seas.

My bet is that your crew and the other crew were the only crews on the sea at that time. You both sank, they left the server, leaving you on a empty server, which resulted in server merge. There is nothing weird about this.

You should probably try to sell more often and not bank for 3 hours so in case of stuff like this happening you won't lose everything.

  • @iseeurpeeinhd Server migration is disruptive, seriously broken, and all-around evil. I've had countless negative experiences with it, and never a positive one. Not one. They should be optional with the ability to turn them off, at least for X amount of time. I hate, hate, hate getting merged.

  • @genuine-heather Thanks for your reply, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one being affected and frustrated by this.

At the time of fighting, I saw a sloop and a brig on the horizon, there were skeleton ship raids being completed elsewhere while we were fighting as the cloud dispersed shortly before the Galleon came and fought us. I shouldn't have to stress and worry about selling all our loot for something as silly as a server merge, the only thing I should worry about is players, megs, kraken.

The clouds disappear after a while on their own if no one is doing them, same goes with forts. But were those ships on the server anymore when the server merged ? It doesn't matter if you saw them 5 minutes ago if 5 minutes later they are not on the server anymore.

You just had some bad luck of rest of the ships ending their session and then getting merged. There is nothing wrong with this system. Had you been close to the outpost with your loot it would have probably been there after the merge.

I'd rather lose a little loot than be stuck on a server with no one else and I have lost loot to this.

  • @iseeurpeeinhd Ouch, that really sucks. I would guess the other crew quit upon sinking, assuming the loot lost, which might have forced the server merge to kick in.

I think a delayed server merge would be fair, with a warning that you'll merge in x amount of minutes to give players a chance to cash in or at least get to a position where they won't lose loot.

This is a well written report of what happened. Might be worth raising a support ticket to Rare. The more info they have, the easier they can investigate and work out a solution.

  • @luciansanchez82 Thanks for your reply! Yes I already raised a support ticket. We'll see what Rare will say and potentially move towards something like your suggestion like giving a time warning etc...

  • @iseeurpeeinhd Woooow. 'Tis a tale of true sorrow. I pour out some of my grog in memory of the booty that was never plundered.

  • @iseeurpeeinhd sounds like an epic fight with a disappointing ending.

Migrating servers are not perfect, you provided the feedback and let's hope they improve the system.

Sadly the positive aspects of the system are far less noticeable than the negative ones, they are subtle and do contribute to a better game overall even if it doesn't always seem that way.

  • @cotu42 Thanks for your reply! Yes server migration needs to be worked on, hopefully this thread reaches Rare. The fighting experience, makes up for the loot we lost, but the server migration simultaneously ruined both those aspects.

  • I completely understand. I just started a new account up from a 3 year break and fresh out the gate I see a red skull fort so I say okay, I solo it (took me about 2 hours) and just as I’m about to end it I get the server goes down in 15 minutes message
So I’m scrambling to get atleast the Athena’s on board I set sail to an Outpost and the time slowly ticks down until everything fades to black. I understand that this happens and I should’ve been better on the times but man does it suck to lose all that loot so I feel you there.

  • As this post is 3 years old and was revived today I will be dropping anchor here.

Please keep in mind that reviving old threads goes against the Forum rules.

    Thanks,
