As a lot of items have two actions I have an idea for a secondary use of the speaking trumpet.
While it's main purpose is to put it in front of your mouth to increase your speaking range, how about also being able to put it to your ear in order to increase your hearing range?
This could not only allow you to pick up what other people are saying from further away, but maybe also to determine in which direction you need to go for an order of souls quest.

You'd naturally put it to the ear on the same side as the hand you are holding the trumpet in (Can't remember in which one you hold it). Maybe your pirate turns his head and you can see the trumpet at the corner of the screen. Would have them turn so far in the animation you'd be pointing the trumpet in the direction you were looking before.
Or maybe you go third person and can only turn around to use this as a directional microphone. That'd be up to Rare to test out if they were to pick up this idea.

I hate using voice, I don't like the social experience of Sea of Thieves and only play solo or with personal friends of mine, so this would make the item actually useful for us socially terrified solo sloopers! I often forget that the item even exists.
I also usually only play with friends or occasionally go for a solo sloop, in game voice breaks for me with about every second windows update anyways. Currently I mostly use the speaking trumpet as an aim assist for projectile vomiting.
