Rare Should Make Arena Free to Play

  • Aoy Pirates ! I think Arena should be accessible and free to all users like Fortnite whether you are on XBOX or PC we should be able to download the Sea of Thieves client and have access to the main menu to create our hacker and leave with 4 friends. Arena. if this mode appeals to the players they have the opportunity to buy a gamepass subscription or the full game to discover the real Sea of Thieves game and its live campaign with the stories. What do you think ? also making an online cosmetics shop would be a good idea. If a Rare developer goes through here I think you have more interest in doing that than making Arena a traditional DLC.

( sorry for my english i'm doing my best )

  • @xredx-harlow Hey,

I'm gonna say no to that. The effect could be exactly the opposite, as some people who are now, would stop paying for gamepass.

Also there would have to be some new way to monetize the f2p model implemented. Which would be super hard to balance in relation to people who bought the game already (or gamepass users) and i'd bet the reaction from fans wouldn't be pretty...

  • I would love an increase in the player base, and I think this is an interesting idea. I personally believe instead of making arena mode free, Rare does what For Honor did and make the whole game a free download for a weekend or two.

  • @sir-lotus Hey thanks for your reply , I do not think Arena only makes arena Free 2 Play impact on base game sales or XBOX Gamepass subscriptions on the contrary there are very few games that are played at 4 Coop friends over Sea of Thieves is optimize to run on low-power machines like low-end PCs and so is accessible to many PC players in addition to XBOX ONE consoles. see the model Arena as the Fortnite model ... the game means to attract players freely because the mode will be free but a cosmetics shop to generate income like Fortnite and if people want the full game they buy it or subscribe to Gamepass because there is not only Sea of Thieves on GamePass many games are present and others will come) There are no ways that the Arena F2P mode slows sales and subscriptions to my senses

  • @one-eye-ethan A free play days weekend just after Arena drops is smart business sense. Or is that, savvy business sense.

  • @one-eye-ethan Hello One Eye Ethan, I do not think that making the whole game free 1 week-end or a week retains Fortnite people the very well understood by making people play the game for free whenever they want and it's for this Fortnite currently has so much player and success. many will stay only on the PVP because it would be free but some will be interested in the live campaign and buy the game or a gamepass subscription. Rare really means to do something positive on the game by making Arena F2P

  • You should have to pay 5000 gold pieces entrance fee per round of arena. Ship repairs should cost 5000 gold pieces. Cost of Ammunition: 15 gold per cannonball, 1 gold for a full loaded gun.
In case you run out of money: Micro transactions.

  • Well its mentioned before and here i go aswell: Fortnite.

SoT Arena - Free 2 play. BUY comestics to let Rare make revenue.
SoT Adventure - Buy the game / Gamepass

The way it works on fortnite in my opinion is because the Free Battle royal players of fortnite wanted those V-Buck (in game currency) to buy cosmetics. What they did than was giving V-Bucks in there PvE game. So PvP started to do PvE solely to gain Vbucks for PvP cosmetics. If they do this in SoT. It can help grow playerbase.

They should make in Arena cosmetics to be bought with Doubloons Which u only get if u pay or play adventure. This way those sassy PvP pirates who want that sweet sweet cosmetic to show off, has to go PvE and buy game or game pass.

  • I think a person who does not know Sea of Thieves will see that Arena is free, so he will find out if he can run it on his PC or XBOX and he will see that it is played at many in Coop so he will ask friends and they will play together for free. If the stories of lore interest them they buy the full game or a Gamepass subscription.

  • I think Arena should be Pay (extra) to Play ahaha :P

  • i like how you're all mentioning the "fortnite model".

let me remind you, that the PvE campaign in Fortnite is still in a paid early access stage, expected to be released as f2p in 2019.

It's different, when a game is planned to be f2p from the beginning. Especially when, like in SoT, progression in both modes will be tied.

  • @nunoazuldimeter I think it's a joke ^^ but I will answer seriously.

I think that making Arena pay in addition to the basic game would divide the players too much and is not in this spirit of accessibility that wants to transmit Microsoft

  • @xredx-harlow Arena will be free to play when you buy Sea of Thieves. It is going to be part of the real game and not separate.

  • @sir-lotus But SoT is very different that Fortnite Rare will never let history and gold and the advanced to the golden age in retreat even if they have 100'000'000 of players on Arena. Sea of Thieves and its Lore remain the priority of the Studio

  • @xredx-harlow yep, it was a joke. I wouldn't want that either.
But be free to play is just asking too much

  • @triheadedmonkey Yes that's what I thought I understood but I think that opting for a model F2P just for this mode could attract benefits of players on the basic game and Arena mode if it is only available with the game

  • @theunionjames As I said above I do not think it will impact the Gamepass we do not take the Gamepass only to play Sea of Thieves as much buy the game ... there are hundreds of games in the Gamepass then Sea of Thieves will always be there if you want to play the real game

This isn't a bad idea at all... Well, it's a bit exaggerated as it is, yes. But not bad at all.

The Arena would be something you earned (payed) access to.. something that could fit just right in the pirate world, right?

You don't have enough money to access it, play adventure earn gold.
You're in, you're good enough to self sustain the economy and keep fighting in the arena or else go back to the adventure and come back later.

This wouldn't separate completely one Mode from another and would still populating the sea of thieves world.

People could pay with gold or Doubloons. People would go to the arena after the promise of earning more gold and rewards but with the risk of loosing some of not good enough.

  • @nunoazuldimeter I do not think this idea gives players access. if the game wants to become a great success for the mass it must be free. Fornite is much less deep than Sea of Thieves in its mechanics of gameplay and its strategy but people adopt it because it is free

  • @xredx-harlow yeah you're right, this is totally off topic from your original post. I totally discarded that fortnite alike stuff you're talking about for sea of thieves to appeal the masses.. sot doesn't need that.
It already have all those trials people can experiment the game without paying, plus being part of Gamepass.

Just found that @Goedecke-Michel 's idea interesting and something that could be done to appeal the game emersion and link both parts, and obviously, avoid new players to go to the arena without knowing the basics about the game.

  • Well this is not fortnight soooooo

  • @goedecke-michel no one would play that then

  • I'm pretty well at the point now where when I see 'Fortnite' in the body of the text, I'm not reading the post.

  • Free to play is the plan i think but make it to participate, pay gold, risk it to the potential to win more

I agree with this and it could finally be the gold sink that this game needs. Once you get to a certain level in the game, gold because pointless and you just accumalate more and more.

The prices would probaly need work and I'd say that you just pay for entry and not for resources or repairs, whether that is per crew member or just for a ship entry is another question. Maye there could be tiered entrys where the more you pay, the bigger the jackpot would be?

    Interesting.

You might accumulate gold if you stopped browsing those seapost bargains!

  • Hey
I respect your opinios but i am extremely against it.
It will bring free to play fortnite fans people who dont care about the idea of sea of thieves.
The devs will have to to implement real money cosmetics and kill the unique style of sea of thieves.
the game is going to be another cheap model of cash grab, no thanks i hope the devs will stay the way they are forever

  • In my opinion this isn't a good idea.

The Arena is a PvP mode therefore it will attract those that wish to take part in PvP. If it was free and you would have to pay to access the adventure mode then whats the point? if the thing you want to do is PvP why should you buy the rest of the game if the arena is free. Besides not everything needs to use the fortnite model as an example.

  • I dont want to be on some fools crew in Arena unless they are fully invested in SoT.

I like to go to war with right proper pirates at my side, not Looky Lou's or idiots confused in battle.

The Seadog faction will be integral to both game modes so expect it to be in the full game, not some teaser sample for newbies.

Free arena mode, weaksauce idea but thanks for posting.

  • I saw fortnite and you lost me there. Nothing that’s related to fortnite should be incorporated into sea of thieves.

  • @barnabas-seadog i cannot agree with you more

  • For what? There are so many morons in the game.It is better to add additions for $ 30-40

  • Sorry for the necro but what about if they only made 1 ship accessible for free, limited crew and without being able to either unlock or buy cosmetics, maybe the cosmetic vender is in adventure mode? So people who just want to have a gander can try it out, get a feel for it, then maybe decide they want to play as a 4 man, and get game pass. What about if the cosmetics for the higher end of the PVP required a level as well to purchase (maybe tiers of PVP commendations unlock tiers of cosmetics and each tier requires an adventure pirate level of X to purchase the cosmetics)? Like a lot of the other items do, so they cant just hop on using a trial and buy what they want? But actually get involved.

Just throwing around some ideas whilst I'm on the loo
