I've mentioned in the past the idea of being able to hide in an empty barrel. I still like that idea. I used to wish that barrels could be transported, but that looks like it's not going to ever be possible. So here's a work around.... a twist on the idea.
A pirate whose life is in jeopardy decides to hide in an empty barrel near by. If in 60 seconds game time noone checks the barrel, unexpectedly and randomly, the pirate falls asleep.
Seconds later he wakes up and climbs out of the barrel, only to find himself on someone elses boat, below deck, god knows where....
He then has a choice. He can take advantage of the situation, or climb back into the barrel, again, waiting for a full minute, then hopefully fall asleep and wake up, climb out again, and find himself somewhere else; perhaps on another island, or outpost, or seapost, or another ship. Or not. Most likely not.
Thing is, he may not fall asleep this time and will have to deal with where he finds himself.
The idea is that the pirate, if not discovered inside the barrel right away, by falling asleep gets inadvertantly transported somewhere (inside the barrel)... yet not knowing how or why. Presumably his barrel was mistaken for a shipment and its contents not checked.
I think this would be a humorous and fun way of sort of "teleporting" to other places, but that is outside of a pirate's/player's control. There is no guarantee that the pirate climbing into a barrel will fall asleep or be "shipped" anywhere. So it is likely, most times, for pirates to crawl into barrels to hide, only to be discovered and killed in the barrel (which is why I put a 60 second delay on it).
For this to be fun and unpredictable it should only happen maybe 1 out of every 6 or more times one climbs into a barrel. Maybe even less than that. It should be a completely rare and random occurance.
