Voice your opinion about Sot and get banned

  • This forum is so toxic with all the people defending this game. And it’s really p*****g me off.
They have theirs rights to voice their concerns and what they don’t like about this game. Just the same way you have the right to treasure every single thing rare does.

Forums get locked, people get banned and posts get deleted.
    It’s a shame.

I really don’t bother anymore, I’ve stopped paying this game. I don’t like the community and I have given up hopes on Rare.
To me this game is dying and I really could not care less.
But I want to voice my opinion about the community and how horrible it is. And that rare is backing it up is a disappointment.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Unfortunately that’s not always the case. You can still be civil and respectful and still have your comments deleted just because someone who replies to you isn’t..

  • @ant-heuser-kush actually... you can't

This is one of the standard mod replies when someone says they are leaving and giving constructive criticism as to why they don't like xyz feature

"While we understand your intention is to leave feedback and explain your reasons for leaving, this type of "goodbye" post draws negative reaction, and does not foster discussion in the community"

so even if it's well written and articulated, free of emotions you can still get your post locked. You can also get your post locked if people in it become non-civil. (instead of simply deleting the toxic person's post) This forums is heavily moderated to the point where any post that "draws negative" reactions gets shut down.

  • There's nothing wrong with voicing your opinion. But you've got to take into account that this forum is for a 12+ game and thus will have heavy moderation.

Some people voice opinion in a verry brute and blunt manner, this has two effects.

    1. People won't take it seriously because it's filled with profanity and other bad language.
    2. Mods will have to Edit posts and give warnings/ bans.

So if you want your voice to be heard just be a civilized person about it.
In this post for example your first sentance has profanity in it and you're painting us all with the same brush, namely toxic people.

    What you could have said:

I've noticed as of late that people on this forum are feverishly defending the game and that many posts get moderated because of this. I'm really upset by this.

Also your post has no feedback whatsoever. You might be amazed with what you can reach by just being a civilized person and giving feedback in stead of just salt.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Exactly, couldn’t have put it better myself. And you know what you are right I remember where we got in to a debate every other day ahaha

If it wasn’t for those debates I would have never got ya on my friends list lol.

  • as @Ant-Heuser-Kush said, most of the time there is the allowance to voice your opinion freely without being 'shunned' per say. There are obviously exceptions to this, I have seen moments were valid opinions have been shut down due to being negative, and that has affected a few of the older members of the community, but it has not made it a less free space to talk. I believe posts like this calling out the state of the forum aren't much good though as they just shine too much light on a small problem.

I see a debate as a good sign to be fair as it shows the passion of the game. I personally have voiced a few issues I feel in approach with the community and with the game release but I have never had any repercussions about it.

  • @squaz05 What I find frustrating is, I believe there is a sub set of members who are aware of this and use it to get threads shut down they don’t want or agree with.

I don't like people who agree with me... Argue. Debate. I want you to change my mind. Some do, the others get blocked. I'm not here to fight anyone, but I do have strong opinions.

I totally agree with you!! O

  • @ant-heuser-kush That’s what the forums should be though! Not necessarily arguments but it should be a place for open discussion and debates and feedback.

It’s just not that anymore, and it’s a shame because it only hurts the game in my opinion.

@Ktingaling See what ya did there lol well played xD

  • @Ant-Heuser-Kush haha i actually do agree with you! Not only for the joke, but i love to have a discussion and let someone change my mind through some good arguments.

And indeed, you can only become a better person by arguing discussing with other people

  • I can only imagine the number of notifications that the moderators get as I'm sure there are people who flag nearly every negative post for rule breaking.

  • @kaptenfisk
Hmm, to be honest ...i really wonder why this post wasn't deleted. You can have a quarrel or a problem with one or more persons but to bash the door in saying that the whole community is horrible...And if that is so , can you tell us where we went wrong or treated you wrong, that this kind of feeling is aimed at all of us...If it is a crime to like and even love this game ,then i'm your prime suspect ...But come on, Mr KaptenFish....Take a deep breath and lash out to those that wronged you ,because i can't believe that we all have hurt you or offended you...i have problems with my memory but i really can't remember where i should have given you this thought , or better said wrong thought. You may have had bad sessions , i will not deny that , unfortunately that happens , and it is more than true that Trolls get way to easy away with it , but i'm also sure that , you at least had once a great session in wich you laughed and were happy to be able to play this game...Otherwise ,what's the point of joining a Forum?

  • @clumsy-george to be hontest it's often not even the OP that gets the post locked but the people reacting to it. Often a few people get into a discussion and there's always that guy who has to shout profanities and attack others.

80/90% of the people are fine it's that verry vocal minority that ruins it.

  • @hynieth
Yes, you are true , and i had it once that a reply of mine got deleted...i fell of my chair since i was 110 percent certain that i didn't use one bad ,or moderated word...But not one minute after the deletion i had someone of the Moderators explaining me why it was deleted...It wasn't a lure , it wasn't a bait but in my naiyity , i had given people , verbal bullets to shoot my and other opinions down...And i was assured i didn't do anything wrong and that i was nowhere in trouble...i was just being me ,and like mostly very naive...

  • I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to find it, because I read about it so long ago, but once upon a time (a true story, I swear!), I read a research article about how online forums were naturally toxic and almost always eventually end in being closed down, because people use them to more often complain and arguments start up as a result (and not the good kind) with the few dedicated players that frequent the forms.

I have been a member of a lot of online forum communities in the past, and my experience seems to mirror this purported research - if they don't get completely removed, the forum simply becomes a ghost-town, with like, 5 residents.

So, I personally admire the dedication the moderators have for "keeping the peace" here thus far, and preventing that from happening.

The game is ebbing and flowing just like any other game, and right now, it seems that we're in an ebb period because we're in between updates - I don't think the game is truly suffering just yet.

Opinions are great! Even negative ones, as long as they are given sincerely and respectfully. For example, you can't just say, "this game is stupid! Everyone is stupid!" That helps nobody, because all it does is show others how you feel, which doesn't make for a better game. However, you could instead say, "I don't like this game because it has a long grind and not many features" - this at least lets the development team know what you don't like and where they should put their resources to improve the game for you. It's a win-win if you critique the game in the proper manner, but a lose-lose if you don't...

  • @clumsy-george I would say the difference is George you let people have there opinions. You may respectfully disagree but you do not go out of your way to attack people and try to get threads locked and deleted just because you don’t agree with the topic.

The forum used to be great, we could all have grand open discussion with what we loved about the game and what we didn’t.

Unfortunately that is not the case anymore. Litrally 90% of threads which has constructive criticism ends with the OP being attacked by a small group of forum members and they are allowed to get away with it. Yet whenever people argue back against them they get banned and have there thread locked.

Ever since launch there is a biased around these parts and it shows all to well. I personally see it most days I’m on.

I 110% believe it’s true and I see it because I have varying opinions on different aspects of the game. So for example there’s parts I love about the game and when I write posts about what I’m enjoying I’m fine nothing happens.

But the second there is something I dislike or I feel something could be done differently or “better” I get jumped on by community members and then my posts and feedback usually gets deleted or the thread locked. And nothing ever gets done to the aggressors.

I don’t even flag posts anymore because it’s completely pointless. There’s one set of rules for some and a completely different for others. I believe the only reason I haven’t been banned is because i linger in between both.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Yeah you even disappeared from the Radar for a while. I was surprised after a slight hiatus of my own to see you here too ^_^

It's good to see you posting again.

  • @ant-heuser-kush said in Voice your opinion about Sot and get banned:

I use to flag a lot of post and it backfired... Because someone created a thread about me. No beuno. I try to stay away from certain topics and people. I always have an opinion, but I'm learning to keep quiet. The rules don't apply the same for everyone.

A thread specifically about you? Isn't that a rule violation? :D

  • @knifelife
Mr Knifelife , i really do understand you ...But as you said , the Forum of Old was superb, it was a joy to read and write upon it and i think i can count it on the fingers of one hand , when a Moderator had to step in...But ever since release ,this Forum has been overrun with people who found that the game had "no content", that the game was "Trollheaven" , That PVP and PVE players shoukd be seperated...Before the release , so many people sheered ,danced and enjoyed the fact that Mr Teddy's Team had included Cross -Play ,untill...The release of the game...Then all was bad...

i have loved the Old Forum with all my Heart...i thought that nothing could break us but alas...i too , became mentally down of reading complaints and demands and so on and on for months ...Every time a person, in good or bad intention posted something ,it took about 6 or 7 replies before the Topic went wrong...i deleted my account because all i saw was Darkness , and totally no fun anymore...But i came back for those that i loved and still love to read and learn from...

As said before , this Forum was burning ever since the release...Wich developer ,who has spend years on working on a game they are so passionate about can take all these comments before the motivation starts to drop? In all honesty , if i was a developer ,who had given all his Heart in order to make something unique and i start to read all this , Well, knowing myself, i would be devastated from day one and i'm not sure if i would want to continue ...Luckely they aren't like me , but i think that Rare fully understands that this Forum would probably die off if a new wave of anger and frustration was unleashed upon these Forumpages...

It isn't all about "saving the developer " but also to keep the ones who still love and enjoy the game aboard...This was once a Great Forum, and i think that the Moderators goal is to make it better than it was at release...

Yes ,sometimes people are being shut or halted in their grinding tracks ,but if they wouldn't then the whole Forum would be plunged down the drain in no time...

They may have hurt people , may have come over as " only allowing good things" ,but i think that their main goal is still to repair the Forum towards the days of Old...Is it the right way? i leave that in the middle...i am not perfect nor can i demand perfection of others when making decisions in a few seconds...
But i do love the fact that they try to restore the Forum i once soooo loved , simply because there was respect between eachother...It isn't an act that i call people Mr/ Mrs or Miss, i do that ingame as well because i respect people that want to waste/ spend their precious time with someone like me...

Convinced what? Lol, dude is stating his opinion. He doesn’t have to prove a thing to anyone. I take it you’re one of the condescending individuals on the forums that doesn’t like people being critical in a place designed to take feedback.

It is true, I have to say, from experience, your debating are much better than your sailing skills :P

  • @scraping-static Hey, he says he's very, very upset, but he couldn't care less, doesn't he? Recognize the joke in this contradiction. And he keeps debating for it all, isn't he? Isn't he still touched by what happened.
So I wrote, it doesn't convince me that he doesn't care.

If you were to refrain now from making a fuss at me right away, everything would be fine, sister.

Soul sister? Oh my gah girl where you been

  • Looks at OP post...

    Looks at discussion...

    "Yeah Toxic...."

  • @ant-heuser-kush haha you arent that bad really! we do need to play something together again soon though!

  • @kaptenfisk I burned two accounts. I felt like you and I promised myself, if I was locked / banned again I would not return. Until I learned to express myself somehow clearly but rarely harshly, rudely and possibly hurtingly. Which is hard enough 'cause I am german and we argue short and straight.

Nevertheless, I have not been afraid of criticism.

  • @dumy2008 I would have to wager he surely isn’t as bad as me. I sail like someone with two glass eyes! XD

My poor ship has probably spent more time beached or crushed into a rock than it has at sea

  • Ahoy there! Always lovely to see long term members of the community posting :)

Many of you will remember prior to launch we had no formal Forum rules, and only had our community created Pirate Code. Almost everyone was an Insider, the community was much smaller and an NDA meant everything was super hush hush and secretive!

Post launch, we've seen our community grow massively beyond that small NDA'd community. In addition to the Forums, we have more official community spaces and also have lots of fan communities. Lots more people, all around the world, which made us realise we had to have a codified rule set.

The Forum Rules were not selected arbitrarily, every rule on there has been added as a direct result of a situation on the Forum which has required us to be clearer about what is acceptable or not. From the very start we decided to keep our community spaces pretty family friendly in line with the age rating of the game.

We don't enjoy banning people, and take no pleasure in having to warn people. We believe we should ultimately hold one another in respect and make moderation actions to ensure the Forums are a place full of respectful discourse. We know that people disagree, not everyone will have the same thoughts so we try to moderate assuming our community has the best intentions. If we see that is not the case, we moderate in line with what is set out in the Forum Rules. So please continue to Flag posts! If our attention is not brought to it, we cannot do anything.

Arguments are fine, disagreements are fine and our community are free to do so. However, abuse, intolerance and derogatory language are not okay. Read the Forum Rules, learn them and ensure when you interact with the community you keep them and the Pirate Code in mind. If you feel a thread is going the wrong path, Flag the post and let us know.

As always, thank you for being the super awesome members of the Sea of Thieves community!
