No Neon Cloud Signs

  • This was just mentioned as a side point in another thread, but I thought it deserved its own post.

I think Rare should get rid of all neon sign clouds pointing the direction to ghost ships and skull forts. I love the thrill of sailing along and getting surprised by the megalodon. It would be great to have that same experience with a skeleton ship attacking, or the sudden cannon fire of a live skull fort.

If anything we should hear about recent sightings of ghost ships in the vicinity from the locals at the islands and outposts. Or hear stories from the tavern gossips about strange lights and cannon fire from the nearby fortress at night.

Once you've experienced the event yourself, it appears on your map, but others have to find out about it the same way.

It goes without saying that I feel all upcoming events and quests should be handled the same way. No neon signs.

  • @captain-arcanic agreed. Imv, everything should be unpredictable and a surprise.

  • I would prefer both to be honest, have one marked, as I like lots of ships converging on that spot battling it out while also battling the environment (happens more often with forts than ships), but it would be nice to stumble across a manned fort also/see a ghost ship pop up out of the water unexpectedly.

    Ahoy matey!

Skeleton Ships battles are meant to stay in the game with a cloud like the Forts. However, you'll be happy to know that Rare is actively working to bring Skeleton Ships as emergent encounters like the Megalodon into the game!

I hope you're ready to see those skellies coming out of no where! Especially now we know the Fog is coming in a few weeks as well, it's going to be really spooky and scary to sail the Sea of Thieves! :D

You'll find more informations in the following threads:

    Cheers!

  • I get why RARE did it, to give players something else obvious to do besides a grind, but it takes the mystery out of the server (and facilitates server hopping.)

Wouldn't it be better to discover these things through interacting with the environment? Wouldn't it be cooler to turn in your skulls and hear the Seeress whisper, "'Ware the seas to the north at night! Ships of greater strength than yours have gone missing there of late. Tis' said a dark and mighty captain of old patrols the seas once more with his haunted galleon fleet."

or hear Duke tell you, "I was sailing past the Isle of Last Words the other night when I heard the most awful thunder and saw ghostly lights in the fog. Yet there was no storm on the horizon. I think there be a new lord in Skull Keep!"

  • Also:
    Active skull forts...
    in a raging storm...
with ghost ships patrolling the waters around it!
    ... megalodon optional.

I understand why you'd like to remove the cloud and it would definitely make the NPC more alive and aware of what's going on in the world. However, I believe the cloud's first intent is to create PvP encounters because everyone on the map knows there is something going on there just by looking to the clouds.

I'm afraid that if the only way to know that such an event takes place in the world is to talk to a NPC, there would be a lot less PvP encounters. For me, I certainly do it for gold, but also to have epic battles with other players. To me the clouds work perfectly for these PvP encounters.

  • Not to be rude hear mates, but I'm sick of people calling The Skeleton Ships "Ghost Ships".
There's nothing Ghosty about the Skeleton ships.
    You want a ghost ship?
Look at the ferry of the Darned.
    That's a ghost ship.

Hah! LoL. Right you are! It would be cooler if they WERE ghosts, but it seems the Sea of Thieves has room for only one humanoid enemy. My bad. I will endeavor to label them correctly from here on out.

BTW: Is it the ferry of the "darned" because you get out of death so easy?

  • @captain-arcanic
Hey no worries mate, I'd love it if they were real ghost Ships too.

I guess that's why it's the ferry of the Darned yeah. 😆

  • @sgt-palooggoo same man bit of a pet peeve for me when they call it ghost ships.
