Would 1:1 replicas of the Sea of Thieves ships be sea-worthy?

  • AND operational with their respective crew sizes?

The only one I can imagine having a chance is the sloop. But then again, I've never been on a sailboat in my life.

  • I can't imagine so, no. Even the Sloop, I imagine, would need at least 3-4 crewmembers to operate safely, given the size of the sail and rigging.

The Brigantine and Galleon would need dozens of sailors to operate, the Galleon possibly more. I'm by no means an expert, but sailing ship operations are far from as simplified as the game make them out to be.

At the end of the day, 'tis a fantasy game mate. Why do you ask? Embarking on some DIY projects?

EDIT; Just wanna add, making such hypothetical vessels look visually identical to the ships in game, would require a hilarious amount of grotesque overwork. The art style of Sea of Thieves is made with literally zero right angles, and in the real world, timber literally only comes in right angles.
Every single piece of lumber would need hand-detailing and grinding to offset its shape.

  • You know what, I've had many a thoughts on it too. The wood and building it isn't really the issue as such.
I'm more curious with that single sail, how it's attached to the mast and it's rigging. The square rig type was used on Viking longboats and more seen on larger ships'n'crew not small vessels.

Would it work I've no idea, it must do if the Vikings did it, but the key would be to make that sloop small enough to sail on your own and the bonus would be to operate that sail without all the ducking! Would I dare take it out to sea without headwind capability, erm nah.

  • @just-dpack They wouldnt work. Next time your on a sloop take a good hard look at the capstan. Then take a real good look at the wheel. Now stand at the mast and look at them again, then look down to where they join the deck and look down further to below the deck where the map and voyage table are located, and you will see... nothing there.

This applies to all three ships.

Im sorry to say that you will never un-see this.

  • @solestone563412 she's a beaut!

  • @just-dpack I'd imagine they'd be boyant at the very least.

  • @solestone563412 That does sound like an awesome experience, but I have to point, out, that the ships we're sailing in SoT are based on centuries old designs, the Solway Lass is considerably younger (still over 100 years old, but still).

A historical Galleon absolutely cannot be crewed by 4 people.

Some quick, possibly flawed, but still relevant Googling tells me that a Galleon, even a smaller one, would need a crew of about 50 (Galleons are a very, very old ship type, 17th century or earlier) and Brigantines, a smaller and more recent ship type, would need a crew of about 8.

By and large, with regards to the OPs question, real life 1:1 replicas of the ships in game could not function either mechanically or with their depicted crew sizes.

  • @bearinadress I would say - yes. Sloop, from my expirience has nothing wrong with its sailing capabilities. If to change few small game conventions things it will go.

  • @scoobywrx555 square shape sails not problem at all. I did sail around Tasmania on very accurate replica of slavic ancient type of a boat called "ladya". It is a trade ship version of viking's drakkars. It has only one square shape sail and we used it 90% of the journey.

  • A 1:1 would absolutely not work at all considering on all ships there is nothing to connect the wheel to the rudder, the capstans are all basically just magically floating over the lower deck with nothing to wind the chain around, nor an anchor connected to it in the first place, and the mast is just attached to a flat plate and does not extend through the ship. As well, as far as im aware, the ships in question have only 1 layer to their hull, and one layer of plank between you and the sea outside is not ideal.

Basically, these ships are designed for player convenience and game performance, and would be a nightmare if they ever existed. The only thing they would do is barely float... And probably not the right way up either!
