Megaphone range increase?

  • I thought the megaphone was a cool idea at first, but now it seems like a waste of a inventory slot. I have tried using it in game multiple times and never got a response from anyone. I just feel the range needs to be increased or give it some other useful purpose otherwise at moment it is kind of useless.

  • @wolfman-retro You may find that the folks you're talking to either don't have a mic or are in party chat. I believe the range is set so that you can communicate further, but still have to take the risk of getting closer to those you want to talk to.

  • I think at one stage just the normal audio chat was louder (or at least traveled further) than what the megaphone / bullhorn can achieve today.
I'm pretty sure it was turned down prior to The Hungering Deep so as that the introduction of the bullhorn seemed better.

In fact, I recall we could hear the crews of other ships talking among themselves, mainly when they were upwind from us.

In typical Rare fashion, "tweak" means full-on or nothing.

  • @admiral-rrrsole LOL! Yeah you are probably right still feel like we need some better use of it though. So at the moment guess its a good eavesdropping tool?

  • @wolfman-retro
lol Not quite matey. But you can use it as a funnel to fill your tankard faster or place it in your mouth when laying under the grog keg.

  • Just last night we had someone from another brig board our ship. We didn't see the brig until we rounded the island, so we didn't even know they were there. We saw text from them asking us to form an alliance as we approached the island. We could not see the guy asking us to join the alliance as he approached our brig, and we were in party chat so we did not hear him. He boarded our boat and went downstairs. I killed him. He never drew his weapon which made me think maybe he was being sincere about working together. After rounding the corner and seeing their ship with the make a friend flag, I switched to game chat and I could hear them. They did cannon at us until I barked back over the megaphone that I was sorry and it was a misunderstanding.

Turns out they were being legit and had been trying to talk to us via megaphone. But we simply could not hear them.

It would be great if they could make it so that the megaphone allows you to talk to others that are in a party chat. You still can't hear someone in a party chat unless they use the megaphone themselves, but you can hear them if they use theirs.

    Just a thought.

  • @wolfman-retro you can use the megaphone and the text chat wheel for others to read your ahoys, friend or foe, and other non item texts from further away.
Sadly we can't wield our swords to threaten them with "cutlass ready" from far away.
The text wheel has always been a great under-utilized tool. With others in their discord chats or party chats, the wheel at least gets some feedback.

  • @d-jaguar Yes, that is an option, but honestly, I have seen the text wheel abused so often that I rarely believe the text I am seeing. LOL. When I see We're Friendly, my first thought is BS and my second thought (usually spoken out loud to my crew) is man the cannons. LOL

  • @nofears-fun it is good practice to be prepared. I am not saying sailors don't lie as they can with mics, but it is a way to interact for those who don't respond to the mic.

  • @nofears-fun and @D-Jaguar

It would be more convincing if the "WE'RE FRIENDLY" wasn't typed in capital letters.
I have been an avid internet user for over 20 years and to me that is raising their voice in an aggressive tone.

I wish we could write letters or short words on our cannonballs to say "SO" - "ARE" - "WE". :o)

  • @admiral-rrrsole "SO-ARE-WE" Rolling on the deck.....

  • @d-jaguar True, but for the most part, if I hear you talking to me, most of the time I can tell who are the people that want that alliance, and who want the benefits of the alliance but it is shaky at best, and last those who just want to distract you while they either line up their cannons or someone else is swimming below your ship with a keg.

I do agree that it is a place to start though. But I do think having the megaphone allow someone in a party chat hear you would be very helpful.

  • @wolfman-retro yes if the other ships are frae away the range should be increased.

  • @admiral-rrrsole aye but no funneling ok me crew and I drink straight from the barelle
