Character appearance

  • text alternatif
I'll explain my request : it concerne the appearance of the character.
When I created my pirate character, I told myself that I was going to make an imposing character physically. I wanted a character quite different from the usual choices of players, so I have the pirate I currently have.

The problem I did not expect was that a lot of the customizations of clothes would be as ugly on my character. This can be explained in part by the closed cloaks that are similar to thick dresses, or even robes on the imposing figures. Here are some examples of clothes that I refrain from putting so much hideous on the imposing characters: Kraken jacket, crab jacket, legendary jacket, hunter jacket etc ... Above all the interest of this game is to have fun, and the goal is to acquire customizations.
But now I'm really tired of always putting the same less ridiculous clothes on my big pirate and see others wear the new jackets that fit them well.

Specifically : I ask exceptionally the possibility of changing the morphology (size, weight, face etc ...) of our character as if it was the first time that I played, of course while retaining
name, grades, progress in the challenges etc ...
Moreover I take the opportunity to point out that the possibility of changing the morphology at least once per Xbox account would certainly be appreciated by the community.

  • @sangli-porc they already started with the customization of your own character without loosing everything (hair-style and colour, tattoos and scars) and they will add more in the future, we just do not know when and how ;)

For now all you can do is being patient (and I have a similar problem but with a medium sized female that just cannot wear any dress without looking hideous O_o )

  • yeah if you are a big guy all the long and front close jackets are ugly as hell :P
I won't change my character, but i hope for more cloth that fits the big guys better :D

  • @sangli-porc Changing our characters has been asked for a fair few times since the game released. Rare's stance was that we should grow to love our pirates over time no matter what they looked like, warts and all, as it were. I agree with that sentiment to an extent, I'm happy with the character I made, and although I see more attractive ones out there I wouldn't want to change mine now.

It always felt a shame that a considerable effort was put in to creating the IPG, yet we only see it once. I think there should be a mechanic that allows us to change our characters without resetting them should we so wish. There's no harm in that, right?

  • Aaaaah, The Pirate Generator...Such a Marvellous tool...No, i think that Rare should warn people that they take their time before selecting a pirate as THE pirate , Maybe they already warn ,i have forgotten but mostly people don't read written warnings . So maybe a Narrating voice could be used to warn them.
Rare is filled from tip to toe with great voices so that can't be the problem...

Something else needs to be said as well...i always find it a bit sad that this Pirate Generator is normally a " one time only" feature. You make yer pirate and you stick with it , you like him/her okay but if you don't like him or her ,then it will hinder the Magic of the game for ye...
Now back to the sad part...i started the game and was really taken away by all these characters , i cycled through thousends of those and the idea or question that kept popping in my head ( * Are you not dead yet, moron? heheheheh) was: How many hours has someone spend to make one face , that i simply click away with one push of the finger...
Normally i'm not into those cartoony figures but Rare has added something in each and every pirate : Character.

Many of them seem to have lead a very thrilled but hard life : wrinkles, wraths , scars , broken noses and so on...Even the more Heroic pirates or the Beauty's of the Sea have something that puts them away from being " polished" ...It's this addition of wear and tear that we all get by living ,that is not forgotten and is added in sometimes a subtle way and in some other characters in a more exagurating way...

That is what i so love about that Pirate Generator, it has given literally every pirate a distinctive look. You can read hardship, turmoil , epic battles or eagerness and longing in younger characters.

i like to come across other pirates just to look at their character they have chosen. If people have spend a lot of time to filter the one they wanted ,then it maybe betrays a bit personality from the person behind the Pirate.

i had chosen mine , after i deleted my first one. i was not happy with him and then i spend two hours of cycling through. Two hours and still i had the idea that i just saw the tip of the Iceberg and many more "character" faces were not seen...But you have to stop somewhen and the Pirate i have ,well , i wouldn't want to part from him for the money of the world...He is me when a cartoonist could look in the future...i love him and yep he has grown on me.
i think that Rare maybe could tell us who made all these great figures because i never felt personally attached to any cartoony figure in a game , but now i feel that he is just me...That alone is Magic and then you haven't started the game yet...When you grow older you start to wonder how much time it takes to do something ( * Is yer clock running out , yokel, do you fear the Reaper, moron? If it can calm you down then i tell you this : The Reaper isn't keen on harvesting ye ,you're empty and blank and he has never seen them as ugly as you so your safe - Uhm ,Sunshine...It's " Clumsy" George...* Oh , well , as safe as a dumbo like you can be ....moron) and so i wonder how many man/woman hours have gone into towards drawing and programming all of these hundreds of thousends maybe millions of characters...

It doesn't get said much but the artists behind this should get more praise for their work so maybe ,in the future , people might reroll their character without losing Experience and not the majority of their money...But for me ...Well, i would turn that wheel again ,but only for enjoying the faces again , not to change my Pirate ,i'm happy with him and he feels abit like the old man i once hope to be ( * Nope ...no can do...you ARE already old and ugly )...

  • The main problem mentioned here is that Rare allows a much larger range of body sizes for the figures than it does for matching garments. If Rare would work more carefully with the production of the clothes, the problem would be solved.

The other problem is that you get tired of your figure and want to change something. I would like to see a possibility of automatic changes: Aging, wear, scarring. What you could measure to control the effects:

    • A figure that has had to fight a lot, will suffer scars. Over time and with an increasing number of battles, one or the other scar, a lost tooth, a lost eye could be inflicted.
    • A figure's skin that is often at sea will beburned. The bilge rats and casual players remain pale.
    • A figure that does a lot of trading will be weaker. Whoever carries heavy crates will be more muscular.
    • The ones who often win PVP will stand and walk in proud stature, the others tend to be slim
    • The figure should age a little, depending on overall played hours. The hair turns grey, the wrinkles increase, the posture changes.
    • Those who make music a lot and laugh get laugh wrinkles and look friendly.
    • Who is constantly grumpy, behaves grimly and moans, gets grief wrinkles and hanging mouth corners.

Besides the advancing age one can influence the other external attributes
*make more music, more playing together with others makes the figure more friendly

    • more fighting, more winning makes the figure stronger, prouder
    • playing solo most of the time makes your figure look more fearfully
    • playing less often reduces muscles and fades the complexion
      ...

    You get the idea?

  • @goedecke-michel This proposal is very thoughtful and I like the idea but not in its entirety.
Because if the pirate changes every day drastically, it becomes a simulator of appearance and not a pirate game
(ex : a fat man becomes slim from one day to another, then becomes muscular etc ...)
    No, it's becoming ridiculous.

On the other hand: if we can unlock and personalize the mood, the skin, the skin scars depending on all that we accomplished etc ... I say yes, good idea
BUT not the general morphology, it is too characteristic of our character: his body and his face have something unique.

Rare was not frank on the pirate outfits: the "closed" outfits like the ones I had mentioned make the big characters ridiculous.
In addition : few months since Rare did not implant a single shirt. We're fed up, players must already pay 10 dollars to change the nickname but also we can not reset our character without losing everything then

So I consider it legitimate and urgent to give at least once the opportunity to reset the character without losing its ingame progress.
Free to developers to present it as they want and mechanically as they want (as a single token by character etc ...) but it must be implemented imperatively
Because it is only their fault, as I said before: we players can not guess in advance that the big characters will be ridiculous in the majority of cosmetics

  • But as Shikia Caeleaum said it "we have to being patient"

  • @sangli-porc Make it so if you avoid eating bananas for X amount of game hours your character gets thinner. lol...

  • I've seen alot of forum posts about this issue, and while I totally understand the point behind the Infinite Pirate Generator, and the people who defend the fact that you're stuck with your character no matter what, it would be a very welcomed change to allow for up to a single extra Pirate slot, so you can choose between who you'd like to sail as for each voyage.

I personally believe Rare should introduce a "Crewmate Slot", where you reconnect with the IPG, and create a whole new pirate. However, this slot is tied to your account, just as your first pirate is, so you would share the same resources between your two pirates. Gold, Doubloons, Ship cosmetics, Reputation, Commendations, Etc...

I believe this is the best of both worlds, as it satisfies the need for those folks who really would prefer to have a differently shaped Pirate, allows all players to visit the IGP a second time and make a new Pirate just for fun, it removes having to re-grind for all those levels and such, and it still allows all players to go about their business without a hitch.

I personally wouldn't even mind if this feature were behind a paywall either, as quite honestly, I've been wanting to sail around as someone other than my b****s Pirate Legend lass. (She's come such a long way since her humble beginnings !)

And, I think the ability to create brand new memories with your new pirate is as fun as it was the first time around, but of course, not all players had the pleasure of meshing with their first pirate, which is unfortunate. This second character slot would give them a chance to do so, without losing all their progress. Perhaps even make it so that if you did choose to delete your first pirate, you would lose everything you earned and would have to start over again, giving incentive to keep them around, even if you choose to play with your second pirate more.

Honestly, the idea of having a second slot I think needs to be implemented, so all players can enjoy themselves and play as a pirate they can connect to, the way it was intended.
