Falling overboard and mermaids

  • Not exactly a new topic, but just a thought for a quality-of-life improvement. First, its too easy to fall off the sloop. Was playing earlier and passing snake island, a skeleton fired a cannon at my boat, hitting close to the helm where I was steering. I was sent flying overboard, even though I had only lost about 1/8 of my health from the hit. Which lead into problem 2: now I was in the water while my boat drifted in circles. Because I was turning and the sails were completely down, the boat turned close enough in a circle to me that a mermaid never spawned but it was moving too fast for me to get back on it. I think a simple solution would be a new item: a horn to call a mermaid whenever you need it, as opposed to the game deciding you need it when your boat is already a mile away out at sea filling up with water. Maybe the horn could have a 2-5 minute cooldown time. Either that or I feel it should be harder to fall off the sloop, seems like a light breeze is all it takes to knock my pirate overboard. Thoughts?

  • @supriseautopsy I've been in a similar situation. Was in water with my sloop going in big circles at full sail and couldn't time boarding by ladder - and no mermaid.

I was forced to scuttle. Now, luckily I had nothing on board, otherwise I would have lost anything I could not carry and swim to shore.

I do like the idea of summoning the mermaid at will, when one is ready to be rescued. Too many times my mermaid gives away my position/location, which ruins any stealth I thought I had in my favour. I like to hide a lot. But the mermaid gives my location away more often than not.

Players know when they need help, and at that point, they should have the option to summon the mermaid.

  • @supriseautopsy I see what you are saying here and in a way I totally agree..but I can think of a situation where it would be kinda annoying..so let's say you are on someone else's ship and you are fighting them (PVP) and you knock them off their boat. If they can just pull out a horn and call a mermaid to get right back on their boat that would kinda stink..because it is a good feeling when you knock someone off their boat because you know it is going to be a minute or two before they get back which gives you time to ram an island or whatever it is you are trying to do..but you are right there are a lot of perks to this horn..like if you are trying to sneak onto someone else's boat sometimes the mermaid would give you away..but that for the most part is the only way people know that you are coming for their boat..so I guess there are perks and flaws to this..I kinda like the mermaid the way it is now..but trust me I have been in your situation before when I wish I could of just pulled out a horn and got back to my boat..but I think that would be overpowered. I am just speaking my mind. Let me know what you think! :)

  • @averageheroz Maybe its a 20-30 second time between blowing the horn and the mermaid arriving so to not snuff out the idea of knocking them off, so you would still have the choice to summon but the delay gives people chance.

  • @supriseautopsy Wait, wait, wait... your ship is sailing in a circle and you couldn't reboard? Were you trying to chase the durned thing?

  • You could also have tried swimming away from your vessel to make a mermaid spawn.

  • If you swim away from your vessel this would make a mermaid spawn

  • I also like this idea.

Even with a crew on board, if they're sailing against the wind and I leap over the side for supplies, it takes forever for the mermaid to appear.
Even when I swim away from the ship it still takes forever then she pops up in between the ship and I.

If it's a distance thing then I get it, but why not pop up right beside me when the distance is reached? Most times I have to swim back, well passed the supply barrels to get to her.
I'd rather be taken by sharks, visit the ferry and return with full health.

  • @bran-the-ent in my case no. But guestimating the angle and curve of the boats path is not as easy as it seems, especially if there are rough, high waves. In my case also, the helm must have been slowly turning, because the circular path the boat was making seemed to get wider and smaller each time it came round. After a number of failed attempts to guesstimate it's trajectory, I scuttled. It was just wasting too much time.

Arrgh Then you need to deploy the "Crazy Resilient Admiral Ship Helmster".

    Or C.R.A.S.H. for short. :o)

Never let that bucket o' planks evade you again.
    Send it a message.
Send it to the shore for immediate recovery.
Send 99.99 into my off-shore account each month for no apparent reason.
plus a one time package and handling fee of 50,000.

    But that's not all.

    [dramatic pause]

Buy one and pay for the second one at absolutely the same price.
Plus at no extra cost you could have not one, not two, not three but up to four voting daggers absolutely FREE!
Hurry this offer won't last long before they're onto me.

  • @bran-the-ent sadly enough yes. I had the sail all the way down (ironically to try to avoid the skeleton firing the cannon) and the wheel was turned all the way towards the island. I tried to time where the boat would be, was too short one time and was pushed under by the boat on a second pass. After that between bouncing off the island and the skeleton still firing, the poor sloop belonged to the ferryman. I said I was an experienced pirate, not a very good one.

  • @averageheroz fair point. Maybe the horn could not be available when other crews are nearby? Or you could use your horn to dismiss another players' request for a mermaid temporarily?

  • @theshadyoutlaw I'm aware of that, but the boat was turning in a tight circle and never got far enough away for the mermaid to spawn.

  • @admiral-rrrsole OMG man, you are on a roll lately, lol XD
