Cargo Runs Risk/Reward Balance

  • Love the new Cargo runs, they add a nice bit of variety to the merchant missions however I feel the reward you get for completing them is a little low for the extra risk you have doing them.

Handing in a pristine item only gets 350 gold. I feel this needs to be increased a bit as doing them can be tricky.

We did one last night and had to spend 15 minutes sailing somewhere, avoiding storms, rocks, other ships, whilst watering stuff, stopping stuff from being damaged and stopping stuff for getting wet and got about 2000 gold. A lot of work for a small amount. We then found a sunken ship and salvage about 3000 of skulls, chests and supplies in about 5 minutes.

    Thoughts?

  • @xraylexx I feel the rewards are low but you can complete multiple cargo runs in the one go.

E.g. on a Galleon you could put down 16 cargo runs before setting sail. Collect all the goods and the voyages dissapear (or cancel them, once you have the goods you are erm... good)

Then throw down a MA voyage, collect the cages and off you go.

You'll pick up the animals while delivering the goods. You get like 1.5 - 2 hours to deliver the goods.

Assuming 8 items per delivery @ 350 per item, times 16 voyages that's 44,800 gold just from cargo runs, add a good level 50 MA mission to that and we're talking 55,000 gold for 1.5 - 2 hours work.

Obviously that's assuming it all goes well, animals spawn on the islands you're visiting and nobody robs you but what I'm saying is that the earning potential feels about right to me if you do it right.

  • @boxcar-squidy Still a lot of time watering plants though - we ended up simply drowning our lower deck on a Galleon and dumping the plants down there - once submerged they were fine.

Who doesn't like a little brine with their salad?!

ALSO - you can't activate multiple missions at once - you HAVE to go and collect the items, then you can add a new voyage - so you end up sailing in circles just trying to collect items. We did 4 in 2 hours last night, so made a measley 24320, which only put half a level up for me in MA (level 39 presently)
Merchant Alliance is STILL the most tedious of the 3 to grind out in my opinion and is going to end up being my last level to 50.

  • @boxcar-squidy you can indeed but the risk for running 16 cargo runs is huge. So many plants to water, cloths to keep dry and rums to keep safe for a couple of hours. Just collecting all the cargo for 16 cargo missions fills me with dread.

  • I agree that the risk vs reward is lacking with these missions.

  • @sshteeve I threw water down in my boat to keep the plants wet too. Haven't tried it without yet, so I can't say if I'm going crazy or if it actually works, but the plants haven't wilted on me since.

  • @xraylexx well yeah it has challenges. You can solve the plant one by leaving them on your lowest deck and throwing a bucket of water down there. Just keep the cloth on another deck. The rum means you've got to avoid getting shot and crashing, but those are good things to avoid in general. The cloth makes the rowboat a very useful item for the humble merchant.

I gave values and times from the original zones as I haven't tried cargo in DR yet and imagine it is much more difficult and time consuming.

I'll have to keep doing them to see if the novelty wears off but as someone who found that merchanting actually grew on him (ironically well after I had cheesed my way to level 50 MA) I think they're a good addition to the gameplay.

Even as a solo, there's no reason not to do a delivery while collecting some animals. Basically at minimum it's a free 2,800 gold with each merchant voyage for minimal extra effort, so long as you throw down a cargo run before you head off. Not exactly a game changer on their own, but when seen in context of the merchant profession as a whole I think they're a good addition.

  • @supriseautopsy as long as the water level is above the leaves you are fine. We tried with the water just sitting around the crate and the plants changed to "Parched" so we then filled the deck a little more and we were fine for the rest of the voyage.

Plants are the new Pigs of the Merchant Alliance, they just give no warning as to when they need watering!

  • After the addition of the Reaper's mark flag, I was expecting more of a similar feature where the crew would take high-value cargo (2x a usual quest load) and deliver it with a map-wide notification for other players to try and steal it. I do like the cargo runs as-is in that they're relatively easy and quick, if I'm sitting at home for an hour before doing something I can just knock 2 or 3 out, without worrying about stocking supplies or watching for other ships. Hopefully the other factions get something more high-risk and high-value if this is all the MA is getting.

I hadn't considered doing multiple at the same time! Didn't notice that the voyages disappear after collecting all the goods! Thanks for the heads up!

I am enjoying the cargo runs though. It's very accessible, even for solo players, so don't mind the potentially lower reward as I feel like it's balanced by the simplicity, i.e. take these things from a to b and don't break them.

  • im sure they will be studying it and make a call on upping or not the reward. i did two last nite to test it out. was fun but i agree i can get 2k off one gold chicken haha. i think itll be upped.

i had a fun time really. was tedious solo tho getting all the cargo haha. i need a partner in crime next time. seems fun to imagine a galleon stocked with soooo mucch mercchant stuff. thats really the merchant dream right there. ill have to try it sometime. and that mixed with finidng shipwrecks and getting bottle maps was a ton of emergent fun wrapped in with making me travel around with these goods. and i really liked having to cater to the needs of each thing. cloth makes being a good docker a huge boon. anyone know if you jump in the water with bottles if they break? i didnt test that. i tested swimming with cloth on the top of water it still gets wet lol. i thought maybe! since doesnt look like its actually in the water.

  • Yes I agree. There should be a little more reward for them maybe even giving you a random selection of cursed cannonballs or resources for them.

  • @xraylexx

Ahoy mates, don't forget we also have a mega thread to collect as much feedback and discussion as possible -

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/74281/mega-thread-cargo-runs

  • I guess in the end it will come down to how people use them. I'm sure Rare will be tracking the statistics, they're probably wary of creating another "cheese".

If people aren't doing them because they're not worth it then they'll tweak them, just like they did the Skeleton fleets, which I did last night for the first time since we sent Wanda packing, rewards are much better now, I'll be having a crack at the ships every time I see them up so long as I've got the resources (especially the murder barrels)

  • How can we make the plants survive? We tried to put them in water in the lower deck, but they were dead at arrival...

  • @nic727 normally that works but them in water in the lower deck.i would like to test it who make more money cargo runs vs golden merch runs, i mean on crooked masts u can collect super fast chickens ,on bigger islands it can take some time, and small islands dosent reset

  • Has anyone tried putting the rum up in the crows nest to keep it safe? I haven't tried that yet but the mast doesn't take damage and get affected by hits so theoretically it should be safe correct?

  • @that-vegan-guy Can't it be hit by lightning?

  • @RevanJStone Jumping in the water with rum bottles does not damage them

  • @xcalypt0x That is true but I've been avoiding storms like the plague so the cloth doesn't get wet either

  • I had my rum in the crows nest along with a couple of kegs only to have meg show up and somehow set it off. Very weird.

  • So, having tested this further, my earlier advice appears to be largely nonsense.

Only the 1st cargo run seems to go from the outpost you spawn at. So if you want to load up on them you will need to do a bit of sailing around.

You can still load up on crates for normal MA missions, cancel, then drop some cargo runs, collect the goods from the outpost, get the animals on the way and just keep dropping new cargo runs or animal missions while you are out at sea.

Coming around to the OPs POV though, the rewards are much lower than I thought for the time invested. If you complete them in conjunction with other voyages they do become a nice little side earner.

I enjoy that they are relatively short and normally don't involve too much running around. Overall I think they are a good addition, but I think it's best to think of them as a part-time job on the side rather than a full-time career.

1x MA and 4x Cargo runs did earn me around 20k but we're talking more like 3.5 hours than 1.5 hours. So it's not great money for the time when you consider some of the other money making options available. It is a relaxing and entertaining way of earning a bit of MA rep and gold though.

Don't worry too much about running out of time either, that's a funny one, the label falls off and it just tells you "Good luck" but so long as you remember who's getting what you seem to still get full price for the goods so long as they are in good condition.

  • It makes no sense given dr voyages give so much more.

  • @katttruewalker hi, any way we can transfer this thread to that area?

  • @xraylexx

Unfortunately we're not able to merge threads..... but feel free to copy/paste the original into that mega thread.

  • Would be more interestting if the cargo get more value over time u store it at ur ship, so ppl would try leave it as long as possible on thier ship while doing an athena with thier cargo “well“ stored, for some extra gold at the end of thier journey. Atm there is no need to care about the cargo in athena Missions i guess this could add some more fun if u get every 2 or 3 ingame days a cargo value increas by 100%,
After Keeping rum bottels for a week save u get 2.100 Gold each for a late but storyfull rum...

  • How do you even activate cargo runs? Where do you get them?

  • @x1-two said in Cargo Runs Risk/Reward Balance:

It's a normal voyage you buy from the Merchant Alliance vendor. The image looks slightly different, cargo instead of chickens. So it's a bit random if and how many voyages you can buy.

  • @xraylexx

not worth reading the other posts, this is 100% correct. 350 should be the reward for ruined goods.

I was looking forward to these new play styles but they are rubbish. More effort for less reward.
