I think that'd be neat. What if you're in an alliance you can type out a message and attach it to a bird that flies away and delivers the message to the other ships in your alliance.... OR... you can send a pigeon out that just goes to other ships in the world in general to let them know your intentions. "Headed to the skeleton ships battle. Come help." That type of stuff.
Carrier Pigeons for communication
@tedakin Ahoy matey!
I love the idea of using birds for this kind of communication/a way of leaving messages for others. In the early days of the forum, we had a topic called Parrots For Recon which as well as being an awesomely well constructed, illustrated post, I would always link to as soon as anyone mentioned this kind of feature.
How it would work in the game we have today may need a bit of planning and work carried out to prevent abuse but I can totally see it working.
I was thinking about this the other day I had a weird situation. I mostly play solo, but I wanted to do the Alliance commendation for Cargo Runs. In one of my journeys I saw another sloop exploring a shipwreck and I noticed they were wearing the flag to start an Alliance. As I approached them I put my flag to join their Alliance and sailed away. They seemed to agree with that and sailed in the opposite direction. We were allies but we never talked, I didn't even know their gamertags. It would be so cool to have a pigeon box inside our ships to send messages to our Allies or the closest ship.
"Hey, wanna make an Alliance? Meet me in ----" (perfect for a trap too)
"Can you help me? I don't know how to play this game!"
"Are you friendly?"These are some of the situations you could meet using these messages. I also played with a group that made an Alliance with the whole server and it was terrible to coordinate events. Having everyone in a Xbox Group works but the noise and confusion... it's insane. I can imagine having a small box in the ship with a pingeon inside, there you select your message and the sending options. And when you receive a letter, another pigeon will show up on top of the box, just chilling there and making noise to caught attention with a message tied to his leg.
There was some good discussion a short while back on this here:

Seems some think pigeons are out of place due to reality of how they behave. I think they fit alright in the world of Sea of Thieves. Could also be parrots, macaws, etc. I also came up with a hermit crab idea.
The hermit crab sits up on the railing in front of the helm. When you interact with it, it tucks the message under its shell. It crawls to the side of the ship and drops off. Then it crawls moments later up the ladder on the receiving ship, up on the same railing pulling the message out if that ship’s crab is away of hands it off to the waiting crab to deliver.
Could use a radial messages for basic canned messages. Maybe on PC also allow short messages to be typed.
A message system could be a lot of fun and be put to very good use.
