Sloop Griefing

  • Hi all,
Just wishing there was a way to put a teammate in the brig on the sloop. I've noticed recently that there are a lot of players that jump on an open sloop to ruin the game for the other player - shooting caged animals, setting sails on bestilled boats, and generally being pains in the #@* rather than playing the game. It would be really nice to be able to do SOMETHING when this happens other than having to abandon your voyage to the griefer. Perhaps a way to define a capt if your first player in? I've had way to many game ruined by these players lately and just want to way to put an end to it.

  • @calico-montana if thats annoying, don't play open crew

  • @tinballoon24929 I frequently don't, but your answer isn't a solution. The sloop has a brig, and griefers are an issue. If you you start a boat, closed, and open it up, giving the ship starter command would solve the problem.

It's an issue because you chose to open the crew and got a griefer.

Open and closed crews are an addition to SoT after launch, one of the first results from player feedback and is Rare's solution.

I hear what your saying, but dont sail with an open crew unless your prepared to deal with any possible situation.
Stick to a friends list, or LFG, or Discord, or something.

. . . and who knows why Rare keeps a brig in the sloop?

  • @calico-montana I normally don't play open sloop any more for that very reason, but when this does happen to me I just troll the griefer. I will point and laugh, and say things like "You're funny. This game is fun." If they drop anchor on you, say "Oh goody, there must be a sunken shipwreck," and dive into the water. "Ah man, it must have despawned. Where do we go next?"

"Do you know what these wood planks are used for?"

Play music loudly through your microphone to the point it is annoying to your griefer.

Let your infant and toddler children make incoherent noises in the microphone.

If they grab hold of the helm and don't let go, drop anchor on them.

    Remain totally silent.

When they raise sail, start singing "Take It Easy" in your best Don Henly voice.

There are lots of things you can try to combat these griefers. I've found that the majority of the time, if their griefing attempts fail to get a negative reaction within the first few minutes they will just leave.

EDIT: To add to this though - I agree that Rare should implement some way to deal with this. If we dont like our sloop partner, allow us to duel them for the boat. loser gets put in the brig.

  • @barnabas-seadog I guess it seems to basically screw the sloop. On all the other boats the issue can be addressed, on the sloop, you got nothing. To say "just don't play open" doesn't fix a real problem with one boat - and not the others. Why not try to address it? I don't understand the pushback.

  • Don't EVER open your crew on a sloop if you have a horde of loot on your boat. Just make sure you deal with recruiting someone first so you dont suffer any losses from a griefer.

  • Even if you could put a crewmate in the brig on a sloop, at that point your solo again, right?
Except you got company below decks unless he chooses to logout.

What if he's not a griefer and ends up in the brig anyways?

  • @tinballoon24929 gottem

  • a must have, afaik

I think the bigger problem is bad behavior in general. I had a guy blow up our galleon in the middle of a skeleton fight. There should be an option to report griefers in general, I think after a couple suspensions they would change their playing habits.

  • @zormis
You can report players. Here are the instructions from the support site.
    https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360000779227-How-to-report-a-player

And article 5 of the pirate code mentions griefing.
    "Article 5
    The Crew Bond Is Sacred
Those who betray their crew and ship through griefing or trolling shall be sent to the brig."

I'm assuming if there is no option to brig someone then it justifies reporting them.

However I do agree with @TinBalloon24929 with regards to playing with an open crew.

  • I'm one to drop the anchor at that point in the middle of the sea and just hold it.

It makes the entire ship the brig. They tend to get bored quick enough and leave. Is the only solution I found that sort of works.

  • yes the brig should work for the sloop

  • Closed crew, forget randoms....

While obviously closed crew + recruitment is the current answer, I see no reason why the solution you suggest here can't be implemented.

It seems like a valid suggestion to me and I see no great counter argument to it in this thread ATM.

  • @calico-montana I can totally understand your pain....i tried open crew as well for some time until I realized that i am better of solo slooping rather than have a griefer on board just ducking up everything O_o

the captain thing is something that "maybe" will come in the future since they mentioned some about naming the ship and legendary captains a long time ago ;)

  • @zebulon-leee This is fine and well for players with a lot of experience - and / or players that have a lot of friends that play the game. I didn't when I started. It leaves new players stuck playing with the trolls on open which might thin out some great new people before they realize how great the game and the serious players that are part of the community are.
