Is it just me or is the Shroud missing the actual "shroud" itself that should be surrounding the Sea of Thieves? If you check out the comics / graphic novels, or go by some of the lore (like the new FS how the Alliance cut through the Shroud with their ship head), you'd think it's this huge fog that surrounds the sea of thieves. But in game, it's not there and just turns "red" when you get to it. Sure you can say this is the Magic and "curse" when you get to the edges, but wouldn't it fit more thematically if it's was surrounded by actual fog?
Shroud is missing......the Shroud?
@personalc0ffee Very true, although I must admit I did wonder if they could have done it as a fog that only appears/descends on your ship as you approach the Shroud ... a bit like a storm
@PersonalC0ffee - yea I figured the same amigo. I figured it might be a performance thing and why they did it. Did make me think though thematically if they could do "something" to make it more of of a fog. Dooby's idea could be neat. Might work that it doesn't look like a fog until you get up to it.
Maybe the shroud is there but no one survives the Red Sea to reach it? Ok, here’s the plan:
- Someone queue up a ship
- Find someone logging off with a Galleon
- Have someone on that crew invite one of you mates to that ship.
- That mate then invites 3 more to fill the ship.
- (Optional) Repeat steps 2-4
- Everyone pile on one ship
- Obtain max planks
- Sail directly into the Red Sea.

I thought it would break the immersion of this being on the real ocean if it had hard walls of fog.
Very Playstation eraNot just a hard wall. But an actual fog that you can enter and are destroyed by, ala how the Devil's Shroud actually works in the lore.
@sshteeve I would think it would be appropriate considering this is supposed to be essentially a secluded area, that you can only reach by some mysterious way. Honestly it would be kinda funny to me if you hit a wall Truman Show style at the edge.

@muzackmann I would die if I hit a Blue wall at the edge of the map with a door! lol
Truman Show. Haha!

Probably for performance reasons. Could you imagine rendering all that fog constantly?
I definitely could be wrong but in this instance I wouldn't think so. It's not a moving entity with physics so I would think server performance would remain unchanged. The servers already determine if a ship is in the shroud and a rendered shroud would only be different to the client.
On the client side, the only parts of the shroud that will render are what are in the players viewport. I'm guessing it's more of an ascetic thing so that we can see beautiful sunrises/sunsets.
@bo05ter Technically lore wise (and in-game) we aren't sailing through the shroud when we go there :) The shroud moves (in the lore) like an oceans tides and covers/uncovers different areas at different moments in history. Recently it has retreated enough for us to access the Devil's Roar.
I wouldn't mind being able to see a wall of fog surrounding the game area though. That would be spooky and cool.
@xcalypt0x You have to sail through the shroud to acutally enter the SoT! Demarco Singh told me so...

That would work like a charm.
At first it could obscure your vision beyond the ship itself. Perhaps a cannon shot distance, just in case someone tries to be smart by jumping off the boat to direct the helmsman.
The further you travel into the red sea, the thicker the fog becomes limiting your vision to only a few meters (yards).I'm not sure how they could bind the entity to follow the ship but everything seems "impossible" until someone takes the time and effort to try it.
Off the top of my head, I would treat the entity as a removable object of the ship, such as a player or loot.yes this is important for the game so @Rare-Ltd please add this for the comutiy guys remember your lore for the game it's important guys
