Back in the day when I first started my pirate career on the sea of thieves, In the beta. I remember going it alone and when I had a lot of chests onboard, nothing that would glow or twinkle through thickets and leaves such as skulls and the like, I would load off my chests into secretive areas behind boulders and bushes, or take loot from the vaults and hide them in towers if I was being attacked after completing a skelly fort. Its a process I no longer do because I'm pretty confident in PVP now but back in those days, it felt good having to go hiding treasure when impending threats were inbound and having to come back for it, hoping that it hadn't been discovered! I really think we ought to be able to bury our own treasure!
Does anyone still hide their treasure?
@cmm-solo
Yip, I sure do if I'm solo slooping, if a ship unexpectly appears & I'm on an island, and I'm caught a little off guard.
I'll make sure I hide them good.
A few times, you just know they are making a bee-line for you, if you are lucky enough in spotting them 1st in the distance.I'm not ashamed to say (sometimes) i'll scuttle the ship.
Makes it look like I've left, rage quitted. You have to weight up each situation. Then wait until I see them go on their merry way.Treasure hidden... mermaid back to my new vessel. Then go back for the booty.
I hid treasure on the boat for the first month, but since then I always put it on the bow and park the boat so that the bow is hanging over the dock, then grab, drop and repeat. The only exceptions are boom barrels, pigs and chickens if a snake is onboard, the chest of legends (although since hitting A10 I’ve gotten careless and put it on the bow anyhow), and once I come across the box of mysteries or whatever it’s called.
Ah, now there's some memories. I remember 'back in the day'
Actually the very first piece of loot I ever cashed in was a thing I hid on an island.
It was launch day, I didn't have a clue. All I managed in the final scale test was to leave port and get a feel for the scenery.
I killed my 1st skelly captain, picked up the skull and there's this sloop just laying into my ship. I hid the skull in a bush behind a rock and went out to the beach to see what was up. Boom cannonball to the face.
Sailed back on a new ship and picked up the skull. Felt super smart.

I still do mate
Whereabouts?
Out of interest, asking for a friend...
I don't usually carry chests with me for any longer than necessary, but if I'm feeling reckless and decide to do two or three islands in a row, I WILL hide my most expensive loot if I think it might take awhile.
I'll leave stuff like seafarer chests and disgraced skulls onboard as decoys so they're less likely to search.
I will if I'm solo slooping and notice another ship heading my way or circling whatever island I'm on (I assume they're waiting for me to finish then attack). Last night I stumbled upon a Ashen Villainous skull and box of volcanic rock on a tiny island in Devils Roar. There was a reaper ship pointed my way so I hid the box and headed to an outpost with my skull. @BlueAtTheMizzen, joined in a while later (conviently whilst I was being attacked by a brig) so we didn't head back for the box until about 2 hours later. To our surprise it was still there! I even grabbed it while an allied ship (no communication) was on the same island doing stuff. Cashed it in for about 400 gold....totally worth it (sarcasm), haha.
If I'm doing X's I'll hide them close to the ship, then load them all at once, that way I can book it out of there if a ship comes up on me and assume they'll chase me instead of wasting the time scouring the island for treasure that I may or may not have hid.
I'll also scatter decoy treasure around the ship, low level chests and skulls. Someone boards, we fight, I die and they're hurt. Do they grab the chest by the anchor, the skull by the stairs, or do they take the time to scourer the ship and gamble there's something better they can find and make it out of there before I re-spawn and seek my vengeance.
For me it just adds to the adventure, getting into PVP, usually with the mentality "well, I lost that one, but they didn't get all my loot!"
I'm terrible at PVP so I adapt and play super cautious when soloing
@closinghare208 ah it was just a late night joke, intended to imply that I was going to search your favourite spot on every server I'm on to try and steal it.
But if you have to explain a joke it was either the wrong joke or the wrong audience.
I'll vacate the stage now before people start throwing fruit and veg at me.
