Get rid of the open mic option

  • This has to be by far the worst feature in the game, the few people who run open mic are the most annoying players. You either have to deal with open mouth breathing, family members/pets yelling in the background or hear the guy eat his favorite bag of chips. My only options is to mute them which doesn't really work for communication, telling them to stop it doesn't seam to work or you just have to leave the game which is unfortunate if you're invested with your crew and they joined midway.

I like to breathe, in general. Keeps me in the game longer than if I didn't.

  • @soulseeker push to talk works better and it saves me from hearing mouth breathers.

  • @zormis The problem is with the specific person. I've had a lot of crew members who make loud noises, play music in the background and stuff like that. The problem is with their mic settings. For the most part the mic system works very good.

But why not just use push to talk, there would be no reason to worry about your mic settings?

  • @zormis I take it your a pc player, now I’m not an expert on Xbox, but I’m pretty sure they have no way to use push to talk. (Could be mistaken I rarely ever use Xbox)

Yeah. I'm pretty sure the people he is referring to is those on Xbox that have to use the kinect for voice. Those things pick up everything

  • @zormis If, during a battle situation, whether a PvP or PvE battle situation, I had to stop to push another button just to share info/direct a play, I would go mad. I like how it is set up now even with the downfalls that come with it. My first mate always has a fan running on her. Even in winter. Always. I always hear that fan noise and it is annoying especially because it semi mutes the game sounds. But I would rather have that and be able to openly communicate with them when needed then have to take my thumb or finger off of a button I am using to stay alive/attack with. Sorry, but this is a bad idea. I understand where you are coming from. But the pitfalls of this idea are a way worse alternative.

  • @exeternautical you can set push to talk using any of the controller buttons. I have R3 (push in the joystick) PtT for discord and left bumper for in game chat

  • Push to Talk should be the default for all games and require you to specifically set it to be open. Not just for the annoyance factor, but also for privacy issues because some people have no idea their mic is on in the first place.

  • Xbox player here. There is no "push to talk" option.
If the player has a headset, we can mute/unmute which is in theory the same thing.

Someone mentioned folks using kinect for voice. It can be muted but requires extra steps to access the xbox guide to mute yourself, which takes away from the gameplay.
Most players don't realize they're offending, because no one says anything. I tell players all the time "move your boom" if they're breathing right into the mic.

Your options remain: 1. Mute the player or 2. Ask them nicely to mute themselves 3. Ask them to minimize background noise. 4. Leave and find another game.

  • @exeternautical you are right, Xbox usually has no push to talk. We need our fingers on the controller.

  • Would nice to have the option to use the speaking trumpet as a way of push to talk on Xbox. So muted till you speak through trumpet

  • @zormis
I can understand the frustration, I've had a friend of a friend join our game and she was clearly using the kinect as a mic or something. You could hear everything happing in their house which seemed like it had 20 people sitting around the TV. This however isn't a problem from the open mic feature, it's the people that seem to be clueless. Removing the open mic option completely isn't the solution though as it works perfect for almost everyone.

I myself play mostly on Xbox and have had the microphone adapter from when you still needed it for a 3.5mm jack. It has a really nice single thumb press mute button on there which I use constantly as I have pets (including a gf) that just make noise unexpected. When I'm alone though, I don't need to mute the mic at all which saves me from sometimes having to repeat myself because I talked while I was muted.

The open mic option is fine as it is, if the people that annoy you are friends of yours tell them it's annoying, don't play with them or mute them. I don't see any problem with muting people that either are too loud, don't listen or just have too much background noise going on.

just to put it out there,

there is no push to talk in the party Xbox App for PC...

Everything except a clear representation of their voice, it seems

Well, that should clearly violate the code and trigger an immediate, lifelong ban...

Your gf being a pet, I guess.

Just mute the "mouthbreather", and send them a text message in game telling them you muted them, so they know not to try to contact you via voice chat. :P

You can still hear the other guys in your crew... You're seriously making a bigger deal out of this than necessary.

  • @iisrgntwolfii you definitely can set push to talk in SoT on xbox

  • I'm firmly on the opposite side of the fence from the OP, @Zormis - I think we should see this in MORE games, as it helps add to the atmosphere and ability to communicate with each other, which in SoT's case, is perfectly suitable. I use it, in conjunction with my Kinect (which is very carefully calibrated so that you don't hear things like a feedback echo; I also close the door so that family don't interrupt; while not preferred due to having to wear hearing aids, I do have a stereo headset mic if necessary upon request), party chat, and the in-game quick text commands to communicate in as many ways as possible. Without the ability to have open-world chat, it would limit the game immensely - for example, you wouldn't be able to effectively spy on opposing crews' conversations and learn vital details about their voyage or where their treasure might be hidden. Just the other day, I heard someone talking on an island that I didn't even know was there; I was able to make it back to my boat in time to stop the unwanted intruder and keep it from sailing away because of his loud mouth.

How? I've looked for this in the past and couldn't find it.

Pressing a button is so much better than constantly broadcasting and giving your position away, and interrupting and making constant noise over communication that is actually important...but okay.

  • @aod-fluid Using party chat means I don't give away position to anyone outside my group. And pressing a button to let my mates know that I am engaged with pirate(s) that boarded our ship while also fighting them is important. Which during such battles having to take my fingers away from critical functions just to press a button to talk seems silly at best. If I am playing with someone where the noise is too distracting or interferes with communication then I let them know. I happen to like the open flow of communication as it is now. Just my preference.

  • @jonaldinho settings controller push to talk under interaction

you give it away when people hear you blasting room noise constantly...man i love passing islands and hearing that drone. I just home right in on them and take them out.

  • @aod-fluid I am sure, especially if they are in game chat. But using party chat you can't hear us unless we switch over to game chat. Which we only do if we actually want to talk to you while sinking you. LOL :-)

I would imagine in party chat (which I don't use AT ALL -- I doubt many PC players do -- to be honest it doesn't even work for me) -- but anyway. I would imagine that open mic in party chat would drive me so insane I would probably just ragequit. lol.

  • @aod-fluid really depends on who your playing with. Some people have the mic cranked way up and others are smart and tone it down, but ya it can grate on ya after a awhile. They need to fix alot of the short comings in the xbox audio. I usually create a party when i'm on my xbox because the game chat does not always hold up (i only hear some things from my crew when i'm not standing on top of them), and that means I can't talk to anyone else in the game though honestly i'm with NoFearsFun, mostly I don't need to talk to the person I'm sinking.

  • @zormis said

Yes people can be rude, disrespectful or even sometimes they're just neglectful but simply ask them to fix the issue you are having rather than letting it stress you out.
Someone having faulty mic wiring or a lose mic jack / plug is perhaps the most annoying.

I've played with my IRL mate's son several times. In-game he never bloody answers me until I've asked the third time, he doesn't communicate at all and the only thing I hear come from his mic is when he is eating crunchy snacks. Yet when he is standing in my living room he doesn't bloody shut up.... EVER. lol

Although you've called it "open mouth breathing" I am sure the exhaling that you hear is from their nose which in most cases is closer to the mic than their mouth.... especially when the mic is raised so they can shovel more Skittles into their gob.

When I used to use the headset mic people would complain that they couldn't hear me loud enough. So now I use a desktop mic that does not have a mute button and it is very sensitive. I can adjust the mic volume in Windows but not the sensitivity.
Although my household is relatively quite my mic picks up the birds chirping outside and the occasional truck or V8 roaring up the hill.
When I absolutely need to use a fan I ask the others in the chat party if it's too loud or annoying.

After sorting out the munchers, crunchers and heavy breathers, playing with a regular crew helps keep them in check. If not, tell them again. I usually make a joke of it.
Although it's under control, my regular crew mate and I hear each other's background noises which kind of brings us closer into each other's family. Only today he asked "What's up with Ruger" which is the name of my dog when he barked (once) at someone delivery pamphlets to our letterbox. He knows my dog doesn't bark often or without reason.

This game relies on communication and would be is horribly without it. I like to hear warnings directed at me or to be able to warn my crew mates of an approaching skele keg.

More often than not I use the Xbox party chat and press the "Alt" key if I want to communicate with others outside of my crew.

  • @aod-fluid The only times that happens to me is when someone has a bad mic and everyone has an echo as a result. Then I too want to rage quit. LOL

What is said in SoT forums, stays in SoT forums. We won't tell your gf what you said here.... LOL
