Rare and their bad spelling

  • @surveyorpete said in Rare and their bad spelling:

    Dear Rare Employees,
I've noticed that you have had a bad habit of mispelling words in your game.

    Muphry's Law strikes again!

The word is misspelling – with two Ss – in both British and American English.

    Good catch. 😄

  • I'm perfectly fine with British English being used and understand (now) that their use of it is not wrong - I just think it should be regionally-based, as with other languages and dialects. It makes sense to appeal to the audience your addressing by using what the language or dialect that they are familiar with, not what you are familiar with.

The whole teacher thing was just to add emphasis of importance, but that was only because I knew going into this that it was a weak argument to begin with. While I'm obviously not entirely familiar with it, I am aware that British English is definitely a thing and I was aware of it being a possibility as I wrote the original post. Still think they should change it, though.

  • Next, you'll be complaining about poor old Merrick's atrocious spelling. :-)

  • @galactic-geek What other dialects of English have they translated the game into? I can’t think of one. Perhaps, they should “translate” into Scottish, or Irish dialects? Perhaps, American Southern, New York, Canadian? Translation into other languages is necessary; translation into an American dialect just so that you don’t have to think something may be misspelled is not. You still understood what the words meant - because, well, it’s English, so of course you did. Clearly no need to translate.

  • @galactic-geek to me, this is a strange point to hone in on. Out of all the bugs, content suggestions, general maintenance and new content incoming, you want Rare to prioritize regional english-dialect spelling? Even though you understood the message? What even counts as regional english dialects other than the obvious British/American differences? Do they need to change manoeuvre for Texan-dialects to: "turn the wheel-doo-hickey more quicky?" I don't even know how the poor souls at Rare would translate that into Louisiana Cajun-bayou.

  • You should be honored that they aren't using the dumbed down American English ;)

  • @SupriseAutopsy Did I say anything about prioritizations? No, I didn't - I would just prefer things to be fixed quickly, just like anyone else who thinks they've spotted a potential issue, bug, or mistake. I would be fine waiting in this case, provided I knew a fix was coming. Besides, with the Forsaken Shores update, half of the ambiguous words mentioned will likely disappear, along with their loading screens, and replaced with new ones.

Regarding the mispelling of the word misspelling, I had questioned it, but it wasn't flagged either way, and I wasn't going to waste my time looking it up on the dictionary website. If anything, this is really very telling of the quality of the flagging software from Microsoft or that of this site.

  • @galactic-geek Which words were ambiguous? And, nah, it’s more telling (and ironic) of a teacher to take time to chastise people for misspelling, claim some authority on the matter by stating they are a teacher, who, then, doesn’t know how to spell “misspell.” Especially when that teacher then tries to shift the blame to spellchecking software.

I really do think it best you just quit while you can still see sky digging this hole.

  • It is only arrogant to expect a british company to provide its own products with american english. Furthermore, it is condescending to denigrate their mother tongue as a 'dialect' - as if there had been a poor english before the brits chew it.
It is chauvinistic to expect american english to take precedence.

    @Galactic-Geek
Seriously. Step away from the shovel.

  • Hey @galactic-geek thanks for starting this thread. It is true that sometimes grammatical errors makes it into the game. We try very hard to catch them all but we're all human. Please submit a support ticket when you find one of these errors so we can track and fix them.

Rare is a British company and likes to maintain its heritage by using British spellings. As an American working here, I can understand the confusion, some of the spellings are just weird. But ultimately the spellings and cultural references aren't so different that we can't understand the context, so there's no need to localize.

And to everyone in this thread, let's celebrate our differences and how cool language is to evolve in the way it has, doesn't mean one is better than the other. Although my British co-workers might disagree :P

  • That awkward moment when you struggle to spell both forms correctly xD #Feelsbadman

  • @knifelife I used Google so I didn't end up looking too silly!

/sarcasm/ I fixed it for you, YOU'RE welcome

Honestly, can't believe I'm the one who caught this one.... And me being a Scot, of all people.....
Tut tut English speaking folks from both sides of the pond, you should be ashamed of your collective selfs ;-)
    /sarcasm/

Carry on, nothing to see here.

  • ...Tut tut English speaking folks from both sides of the pond, you should be ashamed of your collective selfs ;-)

    your collective selves.

    Good game this.

  • @edzedd Yup, Yes, Yeah, Uhuh ;-)

  • @waw-gunn Aw man! I was being very careful to watch for things like that too, due to the subject matter - in any case, it was bound to happen eventually; this just goes to show that everybody is human and can make mistakes, even under the best of circumstances. I think the your/you're, its/it's, and then/than are probably the worst grammatical offenders for most people - I see them EVERYWHERE.

  • @galactic-geek Glad that you took my post as intended buddy, and yes, I also used the incorrect spelling of selfs/selves deliberately in order to lighten the post even further.

BTW... .as for your/you're, its/it's etc....don't even get me started on the "I before E" shenanigans ;-)

  • @Hoochpit one of your posts was deleted for the following reason.

    Derogatory Language

Name calling, personal attacks and using derogatory language against Community Members, Rare Employees, Global Moderators or Deckhands is not acceptable. Using such language will result in a warning, then temporary ban from the Forums and a final warning. If the action is persistent or increasingly aggressive, a permanent ban from the Forums will be issued.

I figured they might be using old English, @Musicmee, but I still think that they should translate their in-game text to that of their core audience - which use American English. Keep 'ye ol' Englis in 'ye own UK if ye want, but o'er the pond, we speak...

    'Merica! 😅

Seriously though - they'll translate other languages but not English to English? 🤔

They're using the Queen's English, as do all the Commonwealth (Canucks, Aussies and Kiwis alike) . Y'all had your revolution and started spelling stuff weird. It's a Brit game and the language helps with the local colour. (see what I did there?)

Same as the option for Canadian English (they replace commas with "eh's")
