Currently I am in game and have enough time to write this out because we are sailing against the wind and relatively not even moving. I love how this game wastes my time but I am still addicted. I hate sailing against the wind. Welp, gtg back to my ship to wait 20 min to get to lone cove because we are virtually not moving.

If your in a Brigantine or a galleon and going directly into the wind, you can do the stupid sails (one turned opposite of the other one or middle opposite of the other 2 on the gally) and it makes you go a little faster. It’s how you can catch sloops going against the wind to stay ahead of you.
What your describing is fluted sails also refered to as combat sails which is a sailing tactic IRL. stupid sails is a method of tacking the sails agianst the having them in defualt position this is caused by a bug in the system. Both were not meant to be in the game for each ship was to have a set speed agianst the wind with the sloop being the fastest agianst the wind.
