Smoke from Guns and Explosive Barrels

  • To my knowledge, black powder from the time had a TON of smoke. Due to the powder of the time, most guns produced a dense cloud of smoke after being fired. And probably won't be THAT hard to add, since I have done video game texturing and timing before. And if ya don't believe me of smoke and sparks, here is a slomo video of a flintlock musket.

And here, a cannon. And could affect ship battles due to excesive galleon or brig firing and smoke sticking for a bit. Could fit well as well.

And maybe the explosive barrels too! This is 5 pounds of black powder, could cause this much damage. wait if 5 pounds could do that what can a full barrel do...?

Basically this can add a lot of the pirate theme without being too difficult to implement.

  • There's probably going to be a tonne of smoke effects in Forsaken Shores from volcanos and etc, so explosions from guns and cannons shouldn't be too hard to add, but it could risk some big bugs.

  • Played Naval Action and War of Rights where the smoke is significant and also a factor in battles / seafights, because you loose sight for some time.
    Would ad tons of atmosphere.
    We want smoke!!!!

  • More smoke would definitely add to the atmosphere of sea battles but as long as it's not too much of a cost to frame rates.

  • @admiral-rrrsole Most likely Won't do THAT much with framerate. Hopefully

  • @cheatingpirate Possibly not but you'd be surprised how the Ferry effects frames and that only has a hint of green fog.

  • @admiral-rrrsole True. Then again with the gun smoke it lasts for only a few seconds.

Though.. there are also sparks like shown here

  • I love the smoke in AC Black Flag and I hope they add more lingering smoke and fog to SoT. One nice detail I've notice is the delay of cannon fire off in the distance. Really pushes the immersion when you see the flash of the barrel on a far of island and then here the crack of the cannon.

Everything they add always has tons of bugs that come with it, I wonder if their's anything They can do about that?

  • @cheatingpirate Love the idea, but i think the main technical issue would be getting the smoke to react properly with the wind... Especially in storms and stuff, would smoke move faster away and such.

As well as this i think if they did implement it, it would cost performance of the game so they have then got to find a way to tone down the graphics for lower end PCs whilst still keeping the same visibility as to not make it easier to see through when fighting.

  • During a naval battle with cannons, pistols, black powder barrels, the surrounding area should be full of smoke. The historical reports show that after a short time of fighting you could hardly see or recognize anything. In particular ships with several cannons should be very strongly smoked with a salvo.

  • Would be fantastic to implement realistic and useful smoke after firing and explosions.
Not just for immersion and graphically pleasing reasons....but for tactics!!!

Many times I've stared at an Island that just fired at our boat......having no clue where the canon is. With a few seconds of smoke lingering nearby, it would be much easier.

My crew mate likes to use his pistol to signal his location and without smoke it's purely an audible clue rather than a visual clue.

    Rare!!!! Implement Immediately!!!
    SCHNELL!!!
